Football: Wayne Hills 41, Wayne Valley 0

The tone for this one was set on the first two plays from scrimmage. Hills recovered a Patrick Benson fumble on the first play from scrimmage. On the very next play, Rob Schiller raced in for a 15 yard touchdown.

Andrew Monahan caught two touchdown passes from Kevin Olsen and ran back his third punt return of the season for a touchdown to lead Wayne Hills. Monahan had scoring catches of 4 and 18 yards and scored on the punt return from 81 yards. Olsen also fired a 35 yard scoring strike to Jeff Gignac. Dom Santoro also scored for Hills. Joe Lane had nine tackles and a sack for Wayne Hills.

The Hills defense held Valley to just two first downs and just 81 total yards. Alex Trani had 49 yards rushing for Wayne Valley. Vin Greco led Valley's defense with 8 tackles.

"Andrew can do it all," said Hills coach Chris Olsen. "When the lights come on, no one wants to play better than Andrew. He's doing it when we need him."

Kevin Olsen, meanwhile, bounced back from a late game injury vs. Eastside.

“Kevin (Olsen) didn’t practice all week,” said Chris Olsen, Kevin’s father. “We thought [a bone in his foot] was cracked. It wasn’t cracked. He didn’t practice all week, but he came out tonight and played well, and then we took him out. He’s hurting, but he played really well. He changed some plays at the line, did some things for us besides the obvious things that people see. He does a lot of the little things. He’s certainly a big part of what we do. We didn’t know if we were going to have him.”

Hills at Valley Postponement In Perspective

Last night's Wayne Hills at Wayne Valley football game was postponed due to the threats of inclement weather. The news was met with disappointment by numerous area fans, who felt the game should have been played as scheduled. Saturday morning's high school football roundups seem to bear that out. The Friday Bergen Record, for example, had 21 Friday night high school football games listed on the schedule. 18 of those games were played Friday as scheduled. Only 3 were postponed. Butler at Pequannock and Whippany Park at Kinnelon were also postponed. Both Pequannock and Kinnelon play on grass fields. Hills at Valley was the only game on turf to be postponed. Hills at Valley will now take place tonight at 7 p.m.

Football: Wayne Hills 30, Hackensack 7

Wayne Hills beat Hackensack easily, but the loss may have been costly. Troy Zaffino, one of the team's top returnees, suffered an apparent knee injury on Wayne's second offensive series. He was carried from the field by two teammates and watched the remainder of the game on crutches.

Zaffino suffered the injury with 5:24 to go in the first quarter when he fumbled on the Hackensack 1-yard line. It was just his sixth carry of the season.

"I wasn't as much worried as I was disappointed for Troy," said Hills coach Chris Olsen. "I know our three other kids can play. And our kids have a way of coming together when one of our guys goes down."

Andrew Monaghan got Hills on the board shortly after the Zaffino injury with a 46-yard punt return. The extra point attempt failed. Hackensack took the lead in the second quarter on Malik Bush's 2-yard touchdown pass to Mark Jones. The extra point gave Hackensack a 7-6 lead.

Hills dominated from that point on. Christian Rodriguez scored two touchdown rushes (8 and 1 yards). Justin Beveridge led the way with 61 yards and a touchdown. Robby Schiller picked up 51 yards.

Zaffino's status for the rest of the season is still unknown, but some of his teammates seemed to fear the worst.

"It's going to be a little bit of a tougher season without him," Beveridge said. "It is a big loss. He's a great running back, wide receiver and defender."

"We all have to step up," said Rodriguez. "Our line is the best that we've had in a while."

Wayne Valley: In high school sports, it is said that you are judged on your last performance. It defines you. If that is, in fact, the case, that is very bad news for the Wayne Valley football team. Wayne Valley's season ending 48-0 playoff loss to crosstown rivals Wayne Hills last November seems to greatly overshadow the fact that it has been a pretty good run for the Indians over the last six years.Wayne Valley, No. 6 in the North Jersey Media Group Top 11 preseason poll, has qualified for the playoffs five times and is 43-18 over that span. There are more (Click here to read more)

Wayne Hills: The execution wasn't exactly to Chris Olsen's liking. The Wayne Hills' football coach noticed a slight flaw in the way his offense ran it's goal-line formation at a recent practice and demanded that the unit run it again. "It has to be perfect. We can't afford any mistakes," barked Olsen, watching closely and just a few feet behind his offense. "Any good team out there is going (Click here to read more)

DePaul: Most of the pieces appear to be in place for the DePaul Catholic football team to have a successful season in 2011. There is, however, one glaring exception - quarterback. DePaul returns five pass catchers, one of its top rushers and three starting linemen from a year ago. A replacement for graduated quarterback (Click here to read more)

Chris Olsen still can’t quite believe what he saw nine months ago. Each of the seven state football championships his teams have won was memorable, but Troy Zaffino’s game-winning, 87-yard kickoff return against Old Tappan was beyond special. Zaffino, who took a pitch from an almost-tackled Brian Dowling, scored with five seconds to play to give Wayne Hills a come-from-behind, 24-21 win in the North 1, Group 3 final at New Meadowlands Stadium, recently renamed MetLife Stadium. Week 1 is important to DePaul's players and coaches for more than just the usual reasons openers appeal to football teams.
