Football: Wayne Hills 30, Hackensack 7

Wayne Hills beat Hackensack easily, but the loss may have been costly. Troy Zaffino, one of the team's top returnees, suffered an apparent knee injury on Wayne's second offensive series. He was carried from the field by two teammates and watched the remainder of the game on crutches.

Zaffino suffered the injury with 5:24 to go in the first quarter when he fumbled on the Hackensack 1-yard line. It was just his sixth carry of the season.

"I wasn't as much worried as I was disappointed for Troy," said Hills coach Chris Olsen. "I know our three other kids can play. And our kids have a way of coming together when one of our guys goes down."

Andrew Monaghan got Hills on the board shortly after the Zaffino injury with a 46-yard punt return. The extra point attempt failed. Hackensack took the lead in the second quarter on Malik Bush's 2-yard touchdown pass to Mark Jones. The extra point gave Hackensack a 7-6 lead.

Hills dominated from that point on. Christian Rodriguez scored two touchdown rushes (8 and 1 yards). Justin Beveridge led the way with 61 yards and a touchdown. Robby Schiller picked up 51 yards.

Zaffino's status for the rest of the season is still unknown, but some of his teammates seemed to fear the worst.

"It's going to be a little bit of a tougher season without him," Beveridge said. "It is a big loss. He's a great running back, wide receiver and defender."

"We all have to step up," said Rodriguez. "Our line is the best that we've had in a while."
