Boys Basketball: Bergen Catholic 51, Wayne Hills 49

Wayne Hills (13-12) played valiantly in its regular season finale, only to lose a heart breaker. Bergen's Sean McGuire canned the winning jump shot with 30 seconds remaining. Chris Fonti led Hills with 17 points. Matt Heskins and Joe Brandl added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Hills (No. 13) meets Teaneck (No. 4) in the first round of the State Tournament Monday. The winner will meet the Jefferson (No. 5)-Ramapo (No. 12) winner.

Boys Basketball: Don Bosco 72, Wayne Valley 51

Wayne Valley (16-9) ended its regular season with a disheartening blowout loss to Don Bosco Prep. Nick Siljee led all Valley scorers with 15 points. Keith Greve had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Jason Rosenberg had 7 points and 11 assists. Tom Larranaga pumped in 12 points. Selwyn Maxwell paced Bosco (16-9) with 20 points. Vaughn Gray added 18 points.

Valley (No. 6) takes on Eastside (No. 11) in the first round of the state tournament. Valley beat Eastside earlier in the season. Should Valley win, they will take on the winner of Passaic Valley (No. 3)-Pascack Valley (No. 14).

Wrestling: Wayne Valley captures second-straight District title

The Wayne Valley wrestling team won its second-straight District 4 team title this past weekend and advanced a total of 11 wrestlers into the competitive Region I Tournament that got underway this past Tuesday at Wallkill Valley. The Indians had two individual champions, four silver medalists and five third-place finishers to edge runner-up Pequannock, 184-183.5. Pompton Lakes (115) took third and DePaul (99.5) finished fourth respectively.

Jake Caposela repeated as champion when he edged West Milford’s Evan Poole, 8-6 at 135. His teammate Jeff Nicholls blanked Pompton Lakes’ Mike Felicetta, 4-0 for the 119-pound title. Read More

Boys Basketball: DePaul 62, Passaic Tech 55

Josh Marquez had 16 points and Michael Minarik had 14 as DePaul (19-5) defeated Passaic Tech (11-13). Matt Miller tallied 12 points and Keith Ford chipped in with 8. Xavier Nieves led PCT with 17 points. Brandon James was next with 15 points.

Boys Basketball: Wayne Valley 65, Kennedy 62, OT

Wayne Valley (16-9) defeated Kennedy just three days after losing to Kennedy in the Passaic County Tournament semifinals.

Nick Siljee’s layup at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime. The Indians had rallied from a 10 point deficit. Valley cruised to victory in overtime, with Jason Rosenberg nailing 6 foul shots.


“We went to a 1-3-1 half court trap because we had used up our other defenses,” Valley head coach Joe Leicht said. “From that point on we created some turnovers and we were able to get back into the game.”

Siljee led all scorers with 29 points. Jason Rosenberg added 16 points, 15 assists and four steals. Keith Greve and Tom Larranaga tallied 10 points apiece.

Boys Basketball: Wayne Hills 83, Bergen Tech 54

Joe Brandl struck for a game-high 25 points in Wayne for Wayne Hills. The senior is averaging 24.2 in his last six games. Chris Fonti, a 6-7 senior center, had 18 points, Matt Heskins chipped in with 11 points and 12 assists and Mike Quinn added four points, 11 points and six blocks for Wayne Hills.

NJTCC Ice Hockey Quarterfinals: DePaul 5, Hackensack 2

Joe Redmon had two goals and an assist to lead DePaul. Zach Modeski had two goals and Pete Ross had three assists. George Mead scored a goal as well. Andrew Sullivan had 24 saves.

Wayne Valley led by 7 with just 3 minutes left, but could not hold on. The Indians turned the ball over three times in those final minutes - twice on five second inbound violations and once on a 10-second back court violation.

“I thought both of those five-second calls were quick and shouldn’t have been called,” said Wayne Valley head coach Joe Leicht. “But give Kennedy the credit; they continued to battle every single possession on both ends of the floor. I thought we took a couple of ill-advised shots late and it cost us. If you told me that we would have a seven-point lead and the ball with less than four minutes to play, I’d be pretty confident that we’re going to win the game, but it didn’t turn out that way.”

Kennedy's Shondel Stewart exploded for 38 points. Dawan Lighty added 26 points.

"They both played great," Leicht said. "Stewart has the stats to prove it. Lighty is underrated. He can make a three if don't play him and he can also drive to the basket."

Valley was hampered badly down the stretch by foul trouble. Both starting guards, Jason Rosenberg and Tom Larranaga, were saddled with four fouls apiece and could not play as aggressively when it counted most.

"We were in the double bonus and they were in foul trouble," Lighty said. "That made a huge difference. We were able to aggressively drive to the basket because we knew they couldn't foul us. Wayne Valley is a really good team. We knew it wasn't going to be easy. We couldn't get them rattled. We just kept playing our game and when we got them in foul trouble we were in good shape."

"I have a lot of respect for Joe (Leicht) and his team," Kennedy coach Jim Ring said. "It was obvious that we were going to have to make them work for everything they got. I think that aggressiveness really started to pay off at the end."

Nick Siljee led Wayne Valley (15-8) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Rosenberg recorded 13 points, 12 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Andrew Herasimtschuk and Tom Larranaga contributed 11 and 10 points respectively. Larranaga also grabbed 8 rebounds. Keith Greve also had 8 boards. Mark Tucker grabbed 5 rebounds. Nationally ranked Paterson Catholic steamrolled DePaul (17-5). Kyle Anderson was a dominant force, pouring in 43 points for the winners. Myles Mack was next with 23 points. DePaul got 13 points from Matt Miller. Davon Jacobs and Wally Sajimi had 8 and 6 points respectively.

"To put it bluntly, they are just that much bigger and much more talented than every other team in Passaic County," said DePaul coach Bart Fazio. "We are a pretty good team, but Paterson Catholic is just on a different level right now and I have a tough time seeing anyone who can stop them."

Boys Basketball: Wayne Hills 71, Dumont 51

Joe Brandl had 20 points to lead Hills (10-12) to a regular season win. Matt Heskins was next with 13 points. Mike Quinn and Chris Fonti added 11 points each.

Chris Fonti added four points, nine rebounds and 10 blocks for Wayne Hills. Matt Heskins contributed 8 points. Terrell Spaulding had 20 points to pace Paterson Eastside.

Boys Basketball: DePaul 72, Clifton 41

Matt Miller scored 15 points and Davon Jacobs and Josh Marquez each added 12 to lead DePaul (17-4) in Wayne. Jacobs had nine points in the first quarter when DePaul moved to a 25-5 lead. Nicholas Lavender led Clifton with 11 points.

Tom Larranaga and Nick Siljee had 22 points apiece for Valley (15-7). Andrew Herasimtschuk was next with 17 points. Jason Rosenberg chipped in with 8 points. The double overtime decision gave coach Joe Leicht his 400th win. Leicht is in his 28th season, 21 at Indian Hills before the last seven at Wayne Valley. Siljee had 15 rebounds and Larranaga added five rebounds and three assists.

Wally Sajimi came through with 21 points and Matt Miller added 16 for DePaul in Wayne. Josh Marquez added 13 points for DePaul, which raced to a 20-12 lead after one quarter. Center Terrell Spaulding scored a game-high 24 points for Eastside.

Wayne Valley (14-7) dropped a regular season affair to Passaic just three days after beating Passaic in the Passaic County Tournament Quarterfinals. Tyshon Pickett, a 6-4 senior forward, netted 16 points, including 10 from the foul line, and grabbed 16 rebounds and Andre Dixon chipped in with 12 points, six boards, five assists and two blocks for Passaic. Guard Jason Rosenberg knocked down 17 points and Nick Siljee had 13 for Wayne Valley. Tom Larranaga contributed 10 points.

Passaic County Tournament Boys Basketball: Wayne Valley and DePaul Advance

Wayne Valley (No. 6) defeated Passaic (No. 3) to advance to the Passaic County semifinals for the third time in four years. They will play Paterson Kennedy (No. 2), who beat Passaic Tech (No. 7) in the third quarter.

DePaul (No. 5) avenged its regular season loss to Passaic Valley (No. 4) with an overtime win. The Spartans will be going for their 3rd Passaic County title in the last six years (2003 & 2007). DePaul will face nationally ranked Paterson Catholic (No. 1) in the semifinal. DePaul beat Paterson Catholic in the thrilling 2003 final.

Both semifinal games will be played at Kennedy next Saturday. The final will be played the following Saturday at Wayne Valley.

WAYNE VALLEY 56, PASSAIC 49: Senior guard Jason Rosenberg dropped in 25 points and junior Tom Larranaga sank five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead sixth-seeded Wayne Valley past third-seeded Passaic in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament at Paterson Kennedy. Rosenberg also had 9 assists and 3 steals. Larranaga had 4 assists. Keith Greve had 9 rebounds. Mark Tucker and Nick Siljee had 5 and 4 rebounds respectively. Andrew Herasimtschuk had 6 points. Tyshon Pickett scored 25 points and Shakir Rhodes had 12 for Passaic. Najee Salaam, who is averaging over 15 points per game for Passaic, missed the game for personal reasons.

DEPAUL 66, PASSAIC VALLEY 63, OT: Mike Minarick connected on three-of-four free throws and Davon Jacobs sank one in the final minute of overtime as fifth-seeded DePaul defeated Passaic Valley, the fourth seed, 66-63, in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament yesterday at Paterson Kennedy High. DePaul's freshman guard Josh Marquez came off the bench in the second period and wound up with 20 points, including some clutch baskets down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

Jacobs contributed 18 points and Matt Miller scored 12 for DePaul. Matt Miller had 12 points. Michael Minarik had 7 points. Four Passaic Valley players scored in double digits, topped by Dom Coiro's 16. Dave Clough had 13 points. Nick DiCristina and Anthony DiSanti had 12 points apiece.

"We played our hearts out," Marquez said. "PV wanted it, but we wanted it a little more. We've beaten two good teams (in the county tournament) in Manchester and Passaic Valley, but Paterson Catholic is even better. We're looking forward to the game."

Added Jacobs, "We're exctied to play Paterson Catholic. They're big and talented. We'll play hard."

KENNEDY 70, PASSAIC TECH 64:Dawan Lighty, a junior guard, made two consecutive layups to give second-seeded Paterson Kennedy a 66-62 lead with 34 seconds remaining in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament in Paterson. Senior wing Shondel Stewart scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in a 39-23 first half for Kennedy, but Passaic Tech came back with a 19-9 third period and tied it in the fourth, 62-62, on a 3-pointer by Terrell McDuffy. Jaemille Barnes had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Kennedy and Aazaad Hinto led Passaic Tech, the seventh seed, with 15 points.

PATERSON CATHOLIC 99, EASTSIDE 60: Paterson Catholic, with its height, strength, speed and depth, left little doubt as to the outcome. Brianah Ramos led third-seeded DePaul with 15 points and Alisha Cornett added 13.

PATERSON KENNEDY 57, WAYNE HILLS 46: Kylla Champagne collected 16 points, nine boards and two steals and senior forward Kemisha Gordon chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds for fourth-seeded Paterson Kennedy in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament at Passaic Tech in Wayne. Xavier Nieves led Passaic Tech (No. 7, 10-9) with 14 points. James Brandon and Aazaard Hinton had 12 and 10 points respectively. Wayne Hills (No. 10, 8-10) got 20 points from Joe Brandl. Sam Pressler chipped in with 12 points.

Ice Hockey: Wayne Hills 4, Wayne Valley 3

Joe Lane's goal, assisted by James Benfatti with 4:27 remaining in the game, lifted Wayne Hills at the Ice Vault in Wayne Friday night. Troy Zaffino scored twice, Kyle Blazier also hit and Erhan Sarayli made 32 saves for Wayne Hills (3-13-1), which overcame a 3-0 deficit. Josh West scored twice and Ryan Gomez scored on the power-play for Wayne Valley (8-9-1).

Passaic County Girls Basketball Tournament: DePaul 64, Manchester 40

Alisha Cornett fired in 18 points and Katie Branagan and Rachel Martin scored 15 apiece for third-seeded DePaul (13-3) in the opening round of the Passaic County Tournament in Wayne. Albana Maliqi knocked down 15 points and Coby Johnson scored 12, on four 3-pointers, for Manchester Regional, the 14th seed.

Passaic County Boys Basketball Tournament, First Round: DePaul 60, Manchester 55

Mike Minarik and Joshua Marquez tallied 12 points apiece as DePaul (No. 5, 13-4) defeated Manchester (No. 12). Matt Miller and Wally Sajimi added 9 and 8 points respectively.

Manchester had gone on a 15-4 fourth quarter run to close the gap. Minarik, who had five assists and five steals, buried two key free throws late in the game.

"I really wasn't worried," Minarik said. "We were a little careless with the ball and made mistakes that we normally do not make. But I knew we would hold that lead."

"We put up a good fight," said Manchester coach Rich Sponzilli. "We caused a little havoc and forced them to make some plays down the stretch."

Manchester's 6-foot-7 center Teques Franklin had 19 points and 14 rebounds.

"He was a little bit of an intimidating force," DePaul head coach Bart Fazio said. "We just played kind of a sloppy game and we them hang around for way too long. We'll have to play a lot better to advance much farther in this tournament."

The fifth seeded Spartants will take on fourth seeded Passaic Valley in quarterfinals next week. PV beat DePaul earlier in the season. They beat Clifton in the opening round.

Tom Larranaga scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to lead Wayne Valley (11-6). Wayne Valley outscored Passaic Tech, 22-5, in the fourth quarter. Jason Rosenberg scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth. He also had 13 assists. Nick Siljee had a game-high 20 points, including six 3-pointers, with 11 rebounds to lead Wayne Valley. Aazaad Hinton had 15 points, including three 3-pointers and Xavier Nieves added 14 to pace Passaic Tech.

Tyshon Pickett scored a game-high 20 points and Andre Dixon and Najee Salaam each added 11 to lift Passaic (16-3) in Wayne. Matt Miller scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers and Davon Jacobs added 15 to pace DePaul (12-4). Keith Ford and Michael Minarik tallied 12 and 11 points respectively.

Boys Basketball: Teaneck 60, DePaul 52

Mike Minarik (12 points), Matt Miller (11 points) and Davon Jacobs (10 points) all hit for double digits, but DePaul (12-3) still bowed to Teaneck (13-4), 60-52. Joshua Marquez was next with 8 points. DePaul trailed by 13 at one point in the third period, but roared back to tie the game with four minutes remaining in the contest. From that point on, Teaneck took over. DePaul failed to score on its last six possessions.

“The game got more physical at that point and when it becomes more physical we’re at a disadvantage,” DePaul coach Bart Fazio said. “After we tied it we made some dumb plays. I think the kids got caught up in the emotions, the young ones especially.”

Mike Quinn drove for a basket with 55 seconds left and Matt Heskins converted two free throws with 48 seconds showing to give Wayne Hills (8-8) a 50-46 before 1,400 at Wayne Valley High. Heskins scored a game-high 17 points and Sam Pressler chipped in with 15 for Wayne Hills. Quinn and Chris Fonti had 9 and 7 points respectively.

Senior point guard Jason Rosenberg topped Wayne Valley (10-6) with 16 points and 10 assists. Nick Siljee and Andrew Herasimtschuk came up with 11 points apiece for Valley. Herasimtschuk and Keith Greve pulled in 8 rebounds apiece. Siljee had 6 boards.

"Everybody was saying that Wayne Valley was better than us this year," Heskins said. "We lost a few games early this year, so we wanted to come in here and right the ship. We're improving with each game. Tonight we did a great job against Rosenberg and Siljee, two great players."

"Any time Wayne Hills plays Wayne Valley, in any sport, it's a big game," Hills head coach Jim Catalano said. "It's a big win. We lost some close ones this year. We've used those experiences to get better and play smarter. We're playing with a lot more confidence now."

It was what Bridget Greenwald worked for all summer. She wanted the ability to step up to the free throw line with the game in the balance and be able to knock down the shots.

Tuesday against Wayne Valley, when Wayne Hills needed her the most, she knew she had no choice but to deliver.
