Passaic County Tournament Boys Basketball: Wayne Valley and DePaul Advance


Wayne Valley (No. 6) defeated Passaic (No. 3) to advance to the Passaic County semifinals for the third time in four years. They will play Paterson Kennedy (No. 2), who beat Passaic Tech (No. 7) in the third quarter.

DePaul (No. 5) avenged its regular season loss to Passaic Valley (No. 4) with an overtime win. The Spartans will be going for their 3rd Passaic County title in the last six years (2003 & 2007). DePaul will face nationally ranked Paterson Catholic (No. 1) in the semifinal. DePaul beat Paterson Catholic in the thrilling 2003 final.

Both semifinal games will be played at Kennedy next Saturday. The final will be played the following Saturday at Wayne Valley.

WAYNE VALLEY 56, PASSAIC 49: Senior guard Jason Rosenberg dropped in 25 points and junior Tom Larranaga sank five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead sixth-seeded Wayne Valley past third-seeded Passaic in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament at Paterson Kennedy. Rosenberg also had 9 assists and 3 steals. Larranaga had 4 assists. Keith Greve had 9 rebounds. Mark Tucker and Nick Siljee had 5 and 4 rebounds respectively. Andrew Herasimtschuk had 6 points. Tyshon Pickett scored 25 points and Shakir Rhodes had 12 for Passaic. Najee Salaam, who is averaging over 15 points per game for Passaic, missed the game for personal reasons.

DEPAUL 66, PASSAIC VALLEY 63, OT: Mike Minarick connected on three-of-four free throws and Davon Jacobs sank one in the final minute of overtime as fifth-seeded DePaul defeated Passaic Valley, the fourth seed, 66-63, in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament yesterday at Paterson Kennedy High. DePaul's freshman guard Josh Marquez came off the bench in the second period and wound up with 20 points, including some clutch baskets down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

Jacobs contributed 18 points and Matt Miller scored 12 for DePaul. Matt Miller had 12 points. Michael Minarik had 7 points. Four Passaic Valley players scored in double digits, topped by Dom Coiro's 16. Dave Clough had 13 points. Nick DiCristina and Anthony DiSanti had 12 points apiece.
"We played our hearts out," Marquez said. "PV wanted it, but we wanted it a little more. We've beaten two good teams (in the county tournament) in Manchester and Passaic Valley, but Paterson Catholic is even better. We're looking forward to the game."
Added Jacobs, "We're exctied to play Paterson Catholic. They're big and talented. We'll play hard."
KENNEDY 70, PASSAIC TECH 64:Dawan Lighty, a junior guard, made two consecutive layups to give second-seeded Paterson Kennedy a 66-62 lead with 34 seconds remaining in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament in Paterson. Senior wing Shondel Stewart scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in a 39-23 first half for Kennedy, but Passaic Tech came back with a 19-9 third period and tied it in the fourth, 62-62, on a 3-pointer by Terrell McDuffy. Jaemille Barnes had 19 points and 16 rebounds for Kennedy and Aazaad Hinto led Passaic Tech, the seventh seed, with 15 points.
PATERSON CATHOLIC 99, EASTSIDE 60: Paterson Catholic, with its height, strength, speed and depth, left little doubt as to the outcome. Led by guard Myles Mack with eight points and 6-7 guard Kyle Anderson with seven, Paterson Catholic raced to a 16-4 advantage and enjoyed a 25-11 lead after eight minutes.
