Football: Wayne Hills: 36. Ramapo 14

Last night's game between Wayne Hills-Ramapo was heavily hyped as a Clash of the Titans. But what actually transpired was anything but. Wayne Hills (8-0) badly outclassed Ramapo (7-1). Brian Dowling set a school single-game record for carries with 46 and churned out 324 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception for a TD. Jason Avidissian and Jake Schunke led the offensive line in paving the way.

"What those guys do is behind the scenes," Dowling said. "People don't see that. They see the running back and the quarterback. This offensive line is a new offensive line and I give them all the credit."

"It's amazing to block for Brian," said Schunke. "We watched film. We knew everything (Ramapo) was going to do."

Hills also scored when Troy Zaffino caught a 6 yard touchdown pass from Kevin Olsen. Tyler Ward threw to Tyler Speziale and Doug Norkett for Ramapo.

The win gives Wayne Hills its fourth straight No. 1 seed in the Section I, Group III playoffs. It's also the team's eighth No. 1 seed in 12 years (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). Hills might host Wayne Valley in the first round. Official brackets won't be announced until next week. Photos to come.

Football: DePaul 38, Lakeland 28

Dan Kowal rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one to Massimo Aronson (32 yards) to lead DePaul to a 38-28 triumph over Lakeland last night in Wayne. Wymere Robinson ran for two touchdowns for DePaul. Matt Jachera drilled a 44 yard field goal. Lakeland (7-1) nearly got the ball back when Dan Foesel fumbled with two minutes left and DePaul clinging to a 31-28 lead. George Monsen dove on the ball in the scrum. The recovery led to Robinson's second touchdown, which sealed the verdict.

Kowal threw for 101 yards and ran for 163 yards. Aronson had 61 yards recieving. Joe Moreno ran for 96 yards.

DePaul has been cruising since losing to St. Joseph's and Seton Hall Prep in the first two weeks of the season by a combined 98-41 margin. This win should give them a home game in the upcoming Group 3 playoffs.

"This is definitely a big win for us," Foesel said. "Lakeland was undefeated. We showed them that we're a better team than them."

Football: Wayne Valley 7, West Milford 0

Andrew DeFilippis led the charge with 12 tackles. Anthony Verrilli had nine spills. Alex Trani, Mike Tolerico and Joe Brady had interceptions. Nick Billy had a key sack. The lone score came when Andrew Fournier found Verrilli for a 10 yard touchdown. Fournier finished with 93 yards passing. Mike Fusco had four receptions.

The win in all probability qualifies Wayne for the playoffs. The team is 4-4, which typically is not good enough for a playoff bid. However, six of Valley's eight opponents have winning records. Valley's strength of schedule should earn them enough Power Points to qualify. They would be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed. If they wind up No. 8, they will play at Wayne Hills in the first round.

Football: Wayne Valley 35, Passaic 34

Click here to read the Wayne Today story
Wayne Valley's playoffs hopes remain alive. Valley is just 3-4. Teams have to be at least .500 by the eight-game cutoff date to qualify for the playoffs. Most of the time, 4-4 teams do not qualify. Wayne Valley’s 2009 team, for example, was 4-4 on the cutoff date and did not make it to the dance. This year, though, things could conceivably be different. Wayne Valley coach Brian O’Connor says that Valley can still make the playoffs if they win out, thanks to the new power point system that weighs heavily on strength of schedule.

Valley trailed Passaic, 26-13, when star defensive linemen Kyle Fant was carted off the field on a stretcher. Initially reports are that it's a pinched nerve in his neck. At the time, though, it looked a lot worse. With tears in their eyes, Valley took on a "let's win for Kyle" attitude. It worked. Valley outscored Passaic from that point on, 22-8. Mike Fusco scored all three third quarter touchdowns (1, 25 and 4 yards). Greg LaNeve scored Valley's first touchdown of the game, a 13 yard rush. Andrew Fournier threw a 31 yard touchdown to Anthony Verrilli in the first half. Fournier ran for a two points conversion and threw one to LaNeve.
Fournier finished with 149 passing yards. Fusco ran for 145 yards. LaNeve added 79 ground yards. Andrew DeFilippis led the defense with 9 tackles. Nick Billy had 8 spills, including a sack. Joe Brady had 8 tackles, including 2 sacks. Fusco had 6 tackles.

Soccer: It's Wayne Valley vs. Clifton

Source: The Bergen Record

Wayne Valley will take on Clifton in the Passaic County Boys and Girls Championship Game next weekend.

BOYS: Anthony Nucci was seeing but not believing Saturday. Just 10 minutes into the Passaic County boys soccer semifinal top-seeded Wayne Valley was already two goals down to fifth-seeded Hawthorne. But things changed quickly as the Indians scored four times in the second half, two by Nucci, to pull out a 5-2 victory and earn their 11th trip to the tournament final against second-seeded Clifton next Saturday at Wayne Valley. The Mustangs downed third-seeded DePaul, 3-1, in the other semifinal. Read More

Girls: Audra Kalinowski let it all go. The anger, joy and confusion that had built up inside her for more than 100 minutes came pouring out when tears started rolling down her cheeks. Her look of distress was gone. Her broad tear-covered smile was all that was left. Kalinowski was the hero, just a few minutes after sitting on the bench. Kalinowski scored a sudden-victory penalty- shot goal for Wayne Valley as it upset No. 1 seed Wayne Hills with a 7-6 shootout win in the semifinals of the Passaic County girls soccer tournament after a 1-1 tie through two overtimes. A quicker pace meant increased productivity and a positive result for the Wayne Hills field hockey team.

Using a more up-tempo style, the Patriots raced to a 3-1 victory over Lakeland in the Passaic County tournament semifinals Saturday in Wayne.

"We thought we might surprise them a little if we came out as fast as possible at the start of the game," Wayne Hills coach Jenn Badami said. "It really helped us with our attack and maybe threw Lakeland off-balance a little. It definitely was the right move to make."

Junior midfielder Shanna Burchill scored from 10 feet in front off an assist from Nicole Modak to give Wayne Hills a 1-0 lead just 6:08 into the first half. Then, several minutes later, Modak slammed in a rebound with senior center/midfielder Emily Spazante picking up the assist to make it 2-0 for the Patriots. Read More
