Jack Reilly Christmas Boys Basketball Tournament Consolation Game: Wayne Hills 60, St. Mary's Rutherford 45
Joe Brandl threw in five 3-pointers and concluded with 23 points, six assists and six steals. Matt Heskins scored 16 points for Wayne Hills (2-3) in the third place game of the Jack Reilly Tournament in Fort Lee. Kyle Dadika scored 20 points for St. Mary.
JP Flynn Boys Basketball Christmas Tournament: DePaul 58, Sparta 47
Matt Miller scored 16 points to lead DePaul in the fifth-place game of the J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament in Morris Township. Sean Geary led Sparta with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Wally Sajimi was next for DePaul (4-1) with 9 points.

Passaic County Tournament Hockey Semifinals: DePaul 3, West Milford 1
Peter Ross had two goals and Joe Redmon had 1 as DePaul (4-0-2). Redmon had two assists, while Gregory Liataud and John Peracchio had one assist apiece. Andrew Sullivan had 34 saves. Colin MacDonald scored for West Milford on an assist from Joshua McCann, Kyle Letsche had 26 saves for West Milford (2-1-1)

After losing the opener in the JP Flynn Holiday Tournaments, DePaul (3-1) bounced back with a strong win over Morris Catholic. Davon Jacobs and Joshua Marquez led with 13 and 12 points respectively. Michael Minarik was next with 8 points. Mass Aronson, Keith Ford, Matt Miller and Chris Moore had 7 points apiece.

Northern Highlands Boys Basketball Christmas Tournament: Northern Highlands 62, Wayne Valley 61
Casey Diestel connected on a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to lift Northern Highlands past Wayne Valley (3-1). The Highlanders overcame a 10-point deficit in the final four minutes. Center Brandon Bovino led Northern Highlands with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
“We recognized that they were collapsing on Brandon,” Northern Highlands coach Mike Stone said. “That opened things for Diestel outside and he capitalized by hitting several three-pointers."
Deistel finished with a career high 15 points. Jason Rosenberg had 20 points and 13 assists for Wayne Valley. Keith Greve and Nick Siljee added 14 and 11 points respectively. Tom Larranaga added 9 points. Greve, Siljee and Mark Tucker had 5 rebounds each. Larranaga had 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

Wayne Valley Boys Basketball Preview

Coaches rarely admit that they look ahead. Most, at some point, have utilized the "taking one game at a time" cliché. Wayne Valley boys' basketball coach Joe Leicht, however, admits to occasionally looking ahead to 2010 during the 2008 season. That may seem a bit peculiar, since Leicht's 2008 squad went 20-10 and won a State Sectional title and is clearly one of Valley's best teams ever.
Still, Leicht had two good reasons to let his mind occasionally stray forward — sophomores Jason Rosenberg and Nick Siljee. Both were key contributors on the 2008 team, which was otherwise senior-laden. Finally, in 2010, they get to lead as seniors. Read More

Section I, Group III Final: Ramapo 16, Wayne Hills 8

When St. Jospeh's-Montvale beat Wayne Hills earlier this season, the game was wide publicized for ending Wayne's 55-game win streak. While that was true, Hills still had another, far more important streak going - the team's mark of five straight State Sectional Championships was still very much intact. That impressive run actually included six titles in seven years.
The consecutive title streak came to a grinding halt against Ramapo (10-2, No. 6) in the final. It was Ramapo's fourth final game win over Hills (1993, 2000, 2001, 2009). Hills beat Ramapo in the 2002 final. It was the eighth ever playoff meeting between the two schools. Ramapo beat Hills in the 2003 semifinal and Hills beat Ramapo in the 2004 and 2005 semifinal.
In this one, Jesse Devonshuk, Ramapo's standout running back, was carted off the field on the third play of the game and did not return. The setback did not derail Ramapo, who pulled off the upset. It was Wayne Hills (10-2, No. 1) first loss to a public school team since 2004, when they also lost to Ramapo.
Ramapo employed the running of Jack Bandazian, Scott Kuenzle and Sean Munier and a smothering defense featuring linebacker Munier, tackle Tim Kologrivov and back Justin Salter to hurry quarterback Mike Quinn and stop runner Brian Dowling.

"I loved the way no one hung their heads after Jesse got hurt," Munier said.
"Everyone was shocked when Jesse got hurt," added Kuenzle. "We had to get back up and fight and that is what we did. If we didn't believe in everyone on this team we would not have made it this far."
Quinn, a senior, had his worst performance, many times throwing over his intended receiver in the trying conditions. He concluded completing 5 of 26 passes for 14 yards. Ramapo quarterback Tyler Ward fared much better in the snowy, windy conditions. The Green Raider signal caller completed 7 of 11 passes for 113 yards.
``We did a bad job all-around - players and coaches,’’ Wayne Hills coach Chris Olsen said. ``We couldn't throw. We couldn't pass. On the first possession we moved the ball well and then we let them drive 80 yards on us. We just picked a bad day not to play well. It wasn’t the weather or anything else. They out-performed us.’’
Ramapo scored on its second possession, moving 80 yards in 13 plays. Kuenzle ran 22 yards for the touchdown and Ross Krautman’s kick gave Ramapo a 7-0 lead.
Ramapo tacked on two more points on a safety with 11:57 left in the second period. On an attempted punt, the ball slipped through Tim Divers hands and out of the end zone.
Ramapo scored its final points of the game 2:46 later. Divers again attempted to punt but went down on a knee and Ramapo took over on the Wayne Hills 45. On the first play, Munier hauled in a pass from Tyler Ward and Krautman’s kick put Ramapo in front, 16-0.
Wayne Hills finally broke through with 8:14 remaining in the third quarter. Ed Schiller recovered a fumble on an attempted punt on Ramapo’s 22 and on the third play, Brian Dowling scored from the six. Dowling also had the two-point conversion run.

The History: In North Jersey, nothing has been more certain over the years than the Big Game — Wayne Hills vs. Ramapo. The two schools met annually on the gridiron from 1972 to 2008, each time, for the most part, producing a thriller.

North Jersey Junior Football League Super Bowl

Wayne went three-for-three in North Jersey Junior Football League Super Bowl games this past weekend at Barbour's Pond in Wayne.
The Wayne Boys Club 7th and 8th grade seniors defeated Glen Rock, 45-7 as Jesse McMullen scored on runs of 16 and 47 yards. Justin Walker scored on a 60-yard fumble return. Travis Bligh, Robert Williams, Nick DePalma and Chris Sciavone tacked on rushing scores. Williams, McMullen and Sciavone also scored extra points.
The Wayne PAL 5th and 6th grade juniors edged Pequannock, 20-15 when Nick Goodwin scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak and threw touchdowns to Vincent Tedesco and Brandon Kui. Steven Prince scored a two-point conversion on a pass from Goodwin.
The PAL Pee Wees blanked Kinnelon, 14-0 as Anthony Puntolillo and Danny Dentinger scored the touchdowns and extra points. Matthew Alaimo had a great catch on a pass from Dario Sirni on the first scoring drive. Defensive standouts included Patrick Gilmore, Matthew Alaimo, Michael Alaimo, Puntolillo and Dentinger.
