DePaul raced out to a 21-0 first half advantage on the strength of three Dan Kowal touchdown passes. The junior first hit Shakim Phillips with a 51 yard scoring strike. He threw a 10 yard touchdown to John Weiss and a 4 yard touchdown to Drew Feniello in the second period. Michael Burgio was true on all three PATs.

Valley made it close with two touchdowns in the second half. They got on the board when Pete Savastano found Anthony Verilli for a 37 yard score. Savastano scored in the fourth period on 7 yard rush with five minutes to go. On the touchdown drives Savastano hit Verilli with a total of six completions for for 72 yards. Three of those completions were fourth down conversions. After Valley's second touchdown, Verilli recovered an onside kick. This time, the Indians could not convert.

Kowal finished with 8 completions for 191 yards. Phillips grabbed 6 of those passes for 175 yards. Kowal also blocked a Valley extra point attempt and had a key interception late in the game. The DePaul defense held Valley's potent rushing attack to 44 yards. Kevin Stark, Craig Zimmer and John Proctor led the defense with eight tackles apiece. Nick Kline had seven spills. Kevin Murray, Wonzney and Robert Foster had six take downs apiece. Foster, Kline and Murray had sacks. Murray had a fumble recovery.

Savastano led Valley's defense with 11 tackles. Anthony Perez and Andrew DeFilippis had 10 tackles apiece. Colin Bush had eight tackles. Verilli, Michael Fusco and Franco Rosella had seven tackles. DeFilippis had a sack. Michael Tolerico had a pick.

The win most likely solidifies the No. 3 seed in Non Public, Group III playoffs for DePaul. Wayne Valley failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Their fate was sealed when Ramapo, who trailed Valley for the last spot, upset previously unbeaten Pascack Valley.

Brian Dowling scored on touchdown rushes of 5 and 2 yards and scored on a 10 yard pass from Mike Quinn. Quinn also scored on a 13 yard rush. Trevor Jacobs rushed for a 10 yard touchdown. Jacobs finished with 166 rushing yards. Dowling tacked on 74 ground yards. Quinn completed 9 passes for 128 yards. Ryan Salerno starred with 12 tackles, including two for losses, and linebacker Ryan Piekarsky added nine tackles. Tim Divers booted a 35 yard field goal.

Kelsey Jubinski made 14 saves, but Wayne Valley still lost in the first round of the Section I, Group III State playoffs.

Nicole Modak scored the lone goal for Wayne Hills (12-1-1). Stephanie Zygmunt had 10 saves for Wayne. Jenny Tafro had both goals for PV (14-3). Danielle Coiro and Victoria Gonzalez dished out the assists for PV. Samantha Dilkes had 8 saves for the victors.

Wayne Hills coach Jenn Badami credited Passaic Valley with a good performance.

"They're a relentless defensive team," Badami said. "We had our chances, but they were made plays on defense. Passaic Valley had a tremendous tournament. Our kids will bounce back from this. We'll get ready for the state tournament and hopefully get a chance to play Passaic Valley again."

Wymere Robinson led DePaul (5-2) with 145 rushing yards and touchdown rushes of 2, 4 and 11 yards.

"It's been ridiculous the way the line has been blocking," Robinson said.

Dan Kowal rushed for 145 yards, including an 83 yard score. He also passed for 63 yards. Shakim Phillips returned a kickoff for an 89 yard touchdown. Jonathan Wozney bulled in for a 1 yard score.

PV's Dom Coiro exploded for 320 rushing yards, scoring on runs of 88, 69, 80 and 1.

Football: Wayne Hills 42, North Bergen 7

Brian Dowling had three touchdowns as Hills (6-1) won easily. He scored on rushes of 9 and 1 yards and caught a 46 yard touchdown from Mike Quinn. Trevor Jacobs scored on a 6 yard rush. Quinn added a 1 yard touchdown rush and threw a 53 yard touchdown to Matt DeBlock.

Mike Castles scored on runs of 25, 47 and 20 as Valley (4-3) won in a romp. Greg LaNeve added a 44 yard touchdown run. Mark Tucker caught a 29 yard touchdown throw from senior quarterback Pete Savastano. Michael Fusco caught a 37 yard touchdown from junior backup quarterback Andrew Fournier. Matt Deitz drilled six extra points.

Castles led Valley with 124 yards rushing. LaNeve added 74 ground yards. LaNeve and Walter Barr also had receptions. Fusco, Tucker and Franco Rosella led the defense with five tackles apiece. Anthony Perez and Colin Bush added four tackles apiece. Michael Miller recovered a fumble.

The somber mood among DePaul’s players was understandable. The Spartans’ 29-15 loss at Paramus on Sept. 25 dropped them to 1-2, a start some of their players weren’t certain they could overcome. Jacquelynn Giammetta delivered two goals, Nicole Modak scored once and Stephanie Zygmunt halted nine shots as second-seeded Wayne Hills (11-0-1) advanced in the semifinal round of the Passaic County Tournament in Wayne. Lindsey Ruhle made 11 saves for third-seeded Lakeland (10-3-2).

Brian Dowling, a junior tailback, carried 16 times for 179 yards and a score and caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown for Wayne Hills (5-1). Running back Trevor Jacobs added 117 yards and a score. Quarterback Mike Quinn threw for 103 yards and two TDs.

Tim Divers got Wayne Hills started with a 35-yard field goal. Hills went to the air in the second period as Quinn threw a 51-yard TD pass to Mike Driesse and an 8-yarder to Dowling.

After Tyriek Harrison latched onto an 11-yard scoring pass from Kasey Grabe for Teaneck to start the third quarter, Dowling raced 55 yards for a TD as Wayne Hills built a 24-7 lead.
Jacobs rushed for a 1-yard TD in the fourth period for Hills.

Despite winning by a seemingly comfortable margin, the Patriots were less than happy.

"We didn't have any focus," Dowling said. "Teaneck has some tough kids and they gave us a battle."

"We're not a very good team right now," he coach Chris Olsen said. "This is not a typical Wayne Hills team."

Junior quarterback Dan Kowal threw for a touchdown and passed for a score as DePaul (4-2) won. Wymere Robinson carried eight times for 83 yards and a touchdown. Fullback Jon Wozney got DePaul rolling with a 4-yard TD rush and Mike Burgio added the first of his six kicks.

After linebacker John Proctor tackled the Memorial punter in the end zone for a safety, Kowal sailed 40 yards for a touchdown. Robinson followed with a 1-yard plunge as the Spartans forged a 23-0 halftime advantage.

Shakim Phillips returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for a TD. Slot back Dan Foesel caught a 28-yard TD toss from Kowal when DePaul expanded its lead to 37-0 in the third period.
Junior runner Robert Foster ended the scoring for DePaul with a 1-yard burst in the fourth quarter.

Kowal and Devon Jacobs had interceptions for DePaul. Massimo Aronson had a sack.

The Wayne Valley football team (3-3) suffered would could end up being a crippling loss to Lakeland (4-2). Valley could conceivably make the playoffs at 5-3. They should certainly beat Kearny (1-5) next week. Kearny lost to DePaul and Passaic Valley by a combined margin of 81-0. They gave up 62 points to Paramus last night. A win over Kearny, could mean that Valley's game with DePaul (at Wayne Valley on October 30) is make or break as far as Valley's playoff prospects are concerned.

Prior to the season, Valley hadn't been shutout since 2003. It was their third shutout loss of this season. But these have hardly been blowout losses. The combined loss total to Clifton, Wayne Hills and Lakeland is 12-0. In its three wins over Montclair, Passaic Valley and Lakeland (all possible playoff teams), Valley has averaged 31 points.

Against Lakeland, Jon Allard hit a 30 yard field goal with 1:08 left to propel the Lancers to victory. Valley's best chance to score came early in the fourth quarter when they drove to the Lakeland 8 yard line. The drive was thwarted on second down when Allard picked off a Pete Savastano throw in the end zone.

Lakeland held Valley's talented running back tandem of Mike Castles and Greg LaNeve to 54 yards. Savastano threw for 121 yards. Castles had five catches for 64 receiving yards. Anthony Verrilli had four catches.
On defense, Valley got 10 tackles from Andrew DeFilippis. Michael Fusco and Colin Bush had 7 tackles apiece. Brandon Castelbuono had five tackles, including 2 sacks. Anthony Perez had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Verrilli had an interception deep in Lakeland territory. Mark Tucker had four tackles, including a sack. Ryan Young had a sack too. Savastano and Mike Tolerico had 4 tackles each.

Girls Soccer: Hills to face DePaul in PCCA semifinals

Top-seeded Wayne Hills (6-2-1) topped Lakeland, 3-1 in a quarterfinal round game of the Passaic County Girl’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The victory advanced the Patriots to Saturday’s semifinals where they will try to avenge one of their two losses this season, when they face DePaul at 4 p.m. Their only other loss came at Ridgewood.

Defending champion Lakeland, seeded eighth, took the early lead when Lindsey Capozzi converted a corner kick in the 13th minute of the first half. Hills tied it in the 38th minute when Nikolette Driesse took a setup from Carli Mink and got off a shot from just outside the 18-yard mark that flew over the head off Lancers’ goalkeeper Melanie Miller before hitting off the bottom of the post and dropping into the net. The Wayne Hills field hockey team is off to a tremendous start as it looks to win its first Passaic County championship in five years. Wayne Hills opened its season with a 5-0 win over Northern Valley of Demarest on Sept. 14. Other than a scoreless tie against Lakeland two days later, the Patriots have been very impressive, scoring 34 goals in its last eight games en route to a 9-0-1 record entering this week's action. Carli Mink scored the go-ahead goal 10 minutes into the second half to give the top-seeded Patriots a 2-1 lead. Nikolette Driesse made it 1-1 for Hills off an assist from Mink just two minutes before the half. Brittany Kulcsar added a goal late for the Patriots and Andie Lakin had two assists. Lindsay Capozzi gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead off a corner kick in the 13th minute.
Hills will play fifth-seeded DePaul in the semifinals.

For the first time in 11 years, Lakeland is back in the Passaic County semifinals. And it earned its spot in a new and thrilling fashion.
Lakeland fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 before staging its dramatic comeback, the first come-from-behind victory for the Lancers this year. Stephanie Ruhle scored the first tying goal, Kristen Nazzarese knocked home the second, and Danielle Secor completed the comeback, whacking home the game-winner with 18 minutes left. Lakeland held off a spirited Wayne Valley side, which got a goal and assist from Kelsey Jubinsky, and sent itself back to the County semis, where it faces No. 2 Wayne Hills, for the first time since 1997.
"This is justification that we can play field hockey, that we are a good team," Lakeland coach Patty Kebridle said. "It was a big moral boost to prove that we can come from behind."

Wayne Valley (3-2) bested previously unbeaten Passaic Valley to take the series lead, 29-28-1. The win also allowed Wayne Valley to retain the Today Cup, a trophy awarded by the Wayne Today/Passaic Valley Today.

"It was a big win for us and it was also big because it's a rivalry game," said Wayne Valley coach Brian O'Connor. "I've been here 8 years and I don't think there's ever been a blowout."

Both teams couldn't convert of first quarter opportunities. Wayne fumbled the opening kickoff away, but four plays later PV missed the field goal attempt. On its next possession, Wayne drove to the PV one yard line, but couldn't punch it in. PV missed a field goal again in the second period.

Mike Tolerico got Wayne Valley going in the second period with a 10 yard interception return. PV (3-1) tied it when Mike Governali caught a 37 yard TD pass from Matt Coiro. Wayne Valley took the lead into the half when Mike Castles pulled in a 26 yard touchdown pass for Pete Savastano. PV kept pace in the third period when Jack Pohlman scored on a 2 fumble return.

Wayne Valley pulled away in the fourth period with three touchdowns. Castles scored on rushes of 6 and 21 yards. Savastano scored on a 44 yard interception return. PV tacked on a score when Dom Coiro rushed in from five yards.

"I was disappointed that we didn't score when we got it down to the one yard line in the first quarter," O'Connor said. "We have a big line and, in my opinion, that's our strength. I went off on them at halftime and they responded. We started the season 1-2, so we don't really have room for error. I told the guys that if we lose one, we're done. They believe it. That's why I'm pleased that they came out and made the plays they had to make in the second half."

Added Castles, "We got some halftime speech from Coach O'Connor. We came out like a different team in the second half and really pounded the ball."
Savastano led the way for Valley with 153 passing yards. He also got a 66 yard punt off. Castles compiled 152 yards rushing. Colin Bush had a team high 12 tackles, including two sacks. Andrew DeFilippis had nine tackles. Mark Tucker had eight tackles, including three sacks. Anthony Perez came up with six spills.
Al Cappello, PV's first year coach, took the loss in stride. "We're still 3-1 and that's a decent record. We lost to a good team. Coach O'Connor does a heck of job."

Football: Wayne Hills 56, Bayonne 0

It didn't take Wayne Hills (4-1) long to bounce back from its first defeat in five years. The bounce back win came in the form of a blowout win over Bayonne. Trevor Jacobs, cousin of New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, got Hills going by slamming into the end zone for a one yard score. Later, he scored on a 7 yard rush. Brian Dowling added a 9 yard touchdown rush and caught a 35 yard touchdown from Mike Quinn. Matt DeBlock also caught a touchdown from Quinn (5 yards). Max DeCarvahlo caught a 14 yard touchdown from Quinn. Offensive lineman Nick Tumminello lined up in the back field and had a touchdown run. The final touchdown came when Troy Zaffino caught an 11 yard pass from Andrew Monaghan.

Quinn finished with 113 passing yards. Dowling rushed for 97 yards and caught passes for 89 yards. Hills compiled 419 yards of total offense and limited Bayonne to 39 yards and no first downs.

Football: DePaul 46, Kearny 0

Six players scored touchdowns for DePaul (3-2). Wymere Robinson started the onslaught off with a two-yard touchdown run. Shakim Phillips then raced for a 91 yard score. Trequan Knighten had second quarter touchdown runs of 10 and 3 yards. Dan Foesel caught a 40 yard touchdown from Dan Kowal. Nashawn Daniels and David Saberito had touchdown runs of 29 and 43 yards respectively.

Davon Jacobs intercepted two passes and John Weiss recovered two fumbles for the winners. Robinson rushed for 114 yards.

It was not your average pep rally that took place in the gymnasium of DePaul Catholic High School last Tuesday afternoon. Football: Hills' Historic Streak Ends

The Wayne Hills epic 55 game win streak ended Friday when the Patriots were narrowly defeated by St. Joseph, 17-15. It's been nearly five years since their last loss — a 24-20 home defeat to Ramapo on Oct. 29, 2004.

It took St. Joes, an 11-time State champion since 1995, to bring the streak to a halt. The Montvale-based parochial school regularly sends players to Division I-A schools. They are one of the premier programs in the state.

Hills (3-1) went up 6-0 in the second quarter when Mike Quinn fired a 23 yard touchdown pass to Matt DeBlock. Tim Divers missed the extra point attempt. St. Joes scored all 17 of its points in the second period. Two of its scores came after turnovers.

Hills came storming back in the fourth period. First, Divers drilled a 27 yard field goal. Hills pulled within 17-15 when Brian Dowling slammed into the end zone from a yard out with three minutes left. The tying two point conversion attempt failed when a Quinn to Dowling pass fell incomplete. Dowling led the Patriots with 101 rushing yard.

"We're going to start talking about another streak," Hills head coach Chris Olsen said. "We're going on an eight game winning streak and we're going to finish this thing (a state sectional championship) off. We've got the kids that can do it."

Hills championship streak of 5-straight remains intact. They've won six of the last seven titles.

Football: Wayne Valley 22, Paramus 21

Wayne Valley got off to a 2-0 lead when Paramus botched a punt in the end zone. Matt Castles was the first to reach the punter.

Castles then scored the team's first touchdown on a 13 yard rush. He set up the score with a 54 yard rush earlier in the drive. Later in the drive, Pete Savastano helped Valley convert a 4th-and-10 with a completion to Anthony Verrilli.

Savastano scored Valley's second touchdown on a three yard rush. Savastano had a 31 yard completion to Castles on the drive.

Savastano then threw a 5 yard touchdown to Greg LaNeve in the 4th period. The ensuing Savastano to Anthony Verrilli two point conversion play put Valley (2-2) up 22-8 and would prove crucial. Paramus scored two touchdowns to pull within 22-21 with less than a minute remaining. Instead of playing it safe, going for a tie and thus sending it to overtime, Parmaus elected to go for two and the win. The attempt failed when backup linebacker Mike Pascrel broke up a pass attempt at the goal line.

"Mike was in good position and came up with a great play," head coach Brian O'Connor said.

Pascrel had actually just been burned on the Paramus touchdown.

"They had just beaten me on the same play, so I had a feeling they might try it again," he said. "I"m glad I was able to make the play."

Savastano led the way with 109 passing yards. Castles had 108 rushing yards. Colin Bush and Andrew DeFilippis had 8 tackles apiece. Brandon Castelbuouno had five tackles, including one sack. Savastano and Mike Tolerico had interceptions.

Football: DePaul 48, Ferris 14

Dan Kowal rushed for touchdowns of 30 and 70 yards and threw a 38-yard scoring pass to Shakim Phillips to lead DePaul (2-2) to victory. Phillips also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score in the fourth quarter. Wymere Robinson had touchdown rushes of 20 and 2 yards. David Saberito scored on a 5 yard run.

DePaul’s Mikayla Couch would not let the Spartans’ first trip through the Passaic County girls tennis tournament be only an experience. She wanted to leave a winner. In one of the matches of the day, Couch battled back and forth with reigning first-singles champion Nina Zakotnik of Wayne Hills for a spot in the final.
