Football: Wayne Hills 21, Wayne Valley 16

After a scoreless first quarter, Matt Dietz kicked a 37-yard field goal to put Wayne Valley up 3-0. Alex Trani set the stage by intercepting Brian Dowling on a halfback option. The lead was short lived. Dowling returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards and Mike Driesse added the kick to give Wayne Hills a 7-3 advantage. However, that was short lived as well. Mike Verrilli retaliated by returning the ensuing kickoff 99 yards as Wayne Valley regained the lead, 10-7.
After a scoreless third period, James Hogan plowed in from 1 yard to put Hills up 13-10. Hills went up 21-10 when Nick Masi raced 31 yards for another score. Valley pulled within 21-16 when Mike Fusco scored on a 7 yard run. That play was set up by Andrew Fournier's 62 yard run. Valley got the ball back with two minutes to play, but could not convert.
On defense, senior linebacker Russ Piekarsky had eight tackles for Hills. Pete Daibes and Joe Lane each recorded five tackles including a sack for Wayne Hills. "Oh please," said Valley coach Brian O'Connor upon hearing Olsen's remarks. "Brian Dowling is one of the best backs in the state and we shut him down from scrimmage two years in a row. Both defenses were outstanding and both offenses struggled. We gave them great field position and that's the only reason they got it down to the one. We stopped them on both goal line stands. That's the sign of a great defense, not a sign of being dominated. And those field goal attempts were real long. They were hardly chippies."

Senior tailback Wymere Robinson carried 12 times for 246 yards and three touchdowns as DePaul (1-2) raced past West Milford (0-3), 54-6, last night in Wayne.
Teammate Na'Shawn Daniels carried just four times, but he picked up 106 yards and a score and quarterback Dan Kowal rushed 69 yards for a TD and tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dan Fette for DePaul. Davon Jacobs got DePaul rolling when he returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a score and Matthew Jachera kicked the first of his six extra points. Robinson followed with a 15-yard score and Joe Moreno had a 17-yard interception return for a TD. DePaul grabbed a 41-0 advantage at the intermission.

Football: Seton Hall Prep 63, DePaul 35
Dan Kowal threw for 221 yards and touchdowns to David Saberito (5 yards) and Dan Foesel (3 yards). Wymere Robinson rushed for 95 yards and touchdowns of 1 and 3 yards, but DePaul (0-2) still lost. Davon Jacobs (pictured above) returned a kickoff for a 86 yard score. The offensive explosion was a welcome sight for DePaul fans. They scored only six points in the opening night loss to St. Joseph's-Montvale.
The defense, on the other hand, continues to struggle. Seton Hall's backs did most of the damage, rushing for 399 yards. Kevin Monangai ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Charlie Kennedy added 169 yards and three touchdowns.

Football: Wayne Hills 52, Eastside 0
Brian Dowling had 95 yards rushing and 117 yards receiving to lead Wayne Hills (2-0) to a blowout win. He also scored on a 37 and 1 yard rush and on 48 and 57 yard pass receptions. Kevin Olsen threw for 149 yards. He threw the two scores to Dowling and also found Troy Zaffino for a 14 yard score. James Hogan rushed for 40 yard TD and Andrew Monaghan scored on an 85 yard kickoff return. Pete Daibes, Russ Piekarsky and Nick Masi had five tackles apiece.

Skiffo Drake of WayneSports.com hit this game during his lunch hour in Parsippany: Shane Thompson rushed 23 times for 174 yards and one touchdown and also made 11 tackles at linebacker when West Morris defeated Parsippany Hills, 24-20, yesterday in Parsippany.
West Morris trailed, 14-7, before quarterback John Gutowski connected with Tom Cabarle for a 76-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Thompson then scored on a 1-yard run and Connor Young followed with the extra point for a 21-14 lead at halftime.
West Morris extended its lead to 24-14 when Connor Young hit a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Parsippany Hills closed out the scoring when Dan Jamieson caught an 11-yard TD pass from Mike Comerford

Football: Wayne Valley 21, Passaic Valley 7
Nick Billy scored on a 5-yard interception return to get Wayne Valley rolling. Greg LaNeve and Mike Miller rushed for scores in the second half.
``On that first touchdown, there were trips on my side and it looked like it might be a screen to the wide receiver,'' Billy said. ``I read it, saw the ball, reached up, grabbed it and ran into the end zone. It was my first-ever TD and I wanted to celebrate, but didn't know what to do, so, I just threw the ball down.''
"It was close in the first half, but Valley has always been a second half team," Miller said. "We learn from our mistakes and always make the right adjustments."
It was a great day for the Wayne Valley defense. Mike Tolerico collected two interceptions, one of which set up a touchdown, and had four tackles. A fumble recovery by two-way back Mike Miller led to another Wayne Valley score. Andrew DeFilippis led with 10 tackles and linemen Kyle Fant, Mike Ruth and Cory Conforth also stood out. The kicking of Matt Dietz, on kickoffs, punts and extra points, also was a big plus.
Passaic Valley gained 145 rushing yards, but 93 of those came on a touchdown run by quarterback Anthony Martinez.
``After losing our last two openers, I'm happy we won and our defense played great,'' Wayne Valley coach Brian O'Connor said. ``But we didn't make it on offense. We have a lot of film to look at.''

Football: St. Joseph's-Montvale 35, DePaul 6
Joe Moreno caught a 22 yard pass from Dan Kowal with 40 seconds left to help DePaul avoid an opening night shutout. The 5-foot-5 Presley Beauvais ran for 153 yards and scored twice for St. Joseph's.
"Whenever he got a little crack he just bounced through it," St. Joseph Coach Tony Karcich said.
Quarterback Christian Andrews threw for 84 yards and a touchdown for St. Joseph's. DePaul's Kowal threw for 165 yards, but also threw four interceptions. Wayne Valley: Any one of Wayne Valley's close losses to Clifton (2-0), Wayne Hills (7-0) or Lakeland (3-0) could be viewed as the reason the Indians didn't reach the playoffs in 2009. Failing to reach the postseason for the first time since 2004 has motivated this senior-laden team. The Indians have a new quarterback, senior Andrew Fournier. He has several experienced players with whom to work at the skill positions, but the Indians' schedule is among the most difficult in North Jersey. They do, however, have more than enough talented players back to expect a return to the sectional championship game. They'll start a sophomore quarterback, Kevin Olsen, the third of the coach's sons to play in the program. Olsen is more advanced than most sophomores because he has been around the program since he was a youngster. He doesn't have to carry this offense because Brian Dowling is one of the most productive players in New Jersey. Wayne Valley: The Indians are coming off a season in which they won their third Passaic County title in four years. They expect to be in the hunt again with eight varsity starters returning from last year. Wayne Valley is particularly strong in the midfield with seniors Dan Bellet, Mark Lucci and Christian Gonzalez going into their third varsity seasons. The scoring will have to be spread around with the graduation of Jason Rosenberg. Joey Eilert was also a key loss to graduation. "Our backs are very strong as well, so we're going to try to possess the ball and spread it around until we get an opportunity to score," Kilday said. The team is still going to have to find a way to score more goals, but the experience the Indians bring back will go a long way to making them a team that will contend to repeat as the County champ. The biggest loss is on defense where the Patriots lost their goalkeeper and back line. "We’re going to struggle," Graham said. There is some offense where senior Evan Baum, who has a good shot from the outside, and speedy Maz Zager return in the midfield. Senior Justin Baleuski scored 20 goals on the JV level last season. Graham believes that a good team relies on strength in the back and will look to build a defense that can gel by midseason. Senior Max Seidaman takes over in goal after a year playing behind Mike Diduch. "He’s talented and appears dedicated to becoming a better goalkeeper," Graham said. Wayne Valley: After being the premier program in Passaic County for more than a decade, the Indians struggled in 2009. Their inexperience showed and they struggled to score consistently. Smith is still tinkering with where to play Marissa Madison, but she will likely play in the midfield alongside Megan Leonard. After a great freshman season, forward Natalie Opirhory was held in check in 2009, but Smith feels she has the tools to be a good scorer. Defense is where this team will be strong, with four players — Rachel Herrick, Audra Kalinowski, Megan Bellardini and Carly Campbell — returning. They will play in front of a new goalie. Smith said three girls are vying for the job. Expect a talented freshman class to give the Indians a boost. This team is hoping last year’s hard lessons pay off. Click here to read more

The biggest question mark is in goal, where Kelly Burian takes over for Ally Kass who graduated. Burian has been the back-up the last two seasons and the coaches feel she is ready. Defensively, the Patriots bring back their entire back row. It’s extremely athletic with Christie Cherup on one side and Corey Mania on the other. The midfield is in terrific shape with the return of sophomore Nickolette Driesse, who is coming off an outstanding freshman season in which her received All-Passaic County honors. There has been a competition between junior Maggie Oliver and freshman Tiffany Martinez. Sophomore sweeper Liz Monsen anchors the defense. The midfield will be athletic - even without standout Jenna Gibney, who will miss the season with a knee injury. Alexa Canfora is the most experienced midfielder and will direct the offense. Wayne Hills:The Patriots look like the team to beat in Passaic County and might be one of the best teams in North Jersey. The biggest question mark is in goal, where Kelly Burian takes over for Ally Kass who graduated. Burian has been the back-up the last two seasons and the coaches feel she is ready. Defensively, the Patriots bring back their entire back row. It’s extremely athletic with Christie Cherup on one side and Corey Mania on the other. The midfield is in terrific shape with the return of sophomore Nickolette Driesse, who is coming off an outstanding freshman season in which her received All-Passaic County honors. DePaul:The Spartans have been a factor in Passaic County the last two seasons and Kacar believes they will be again. They will open 2010 with a new goalie, as Erica Keil graduated. There has been a competition between junior Maggie Oliver and freshman Tiffany Martinez. Sophomore sweeper Liz Monsen anchors the defense. The midfield will be athletic - even without standout Jenna Gibney, who will miss the season with a knee injury. Alexa Canfora is the most experienced midfielder and will direct the offense. Wayne Valley 42, Indian Hills 7: Andrew Fournier threw five touchdown passes to lead Wayne Valley. Anthony Verrilli caught three of Fournier's scoring strikes. Alex Trani and Mike Verrilli caught the others. Louis Rezzonico rushed for a score. Click Here For Photos

Field Hockey: Wayne Hills Focused On Third Title

Without question, the 2010 field hockey season at Wayne Hills will be different than the past two seasons. After compiling a combined, 32-6-2 record in 2008 and 2009, which included consecutive North Jersey, Section I, Group III titles, the Patriots have been hit hard by graduation. But head coach Jenn Badami remains undeterred, feeling this year's team has the potential to carry on the high level of success which has defined the program of late.
The three captains this year will be seniors Emily Spazante, a center-midfielder, forward Kate Freeswick and last year's leading scorer, Nicole Modak. Juniors Hanna Lucas, a midfielder, Angelica Giammetta, a forward, should provide Wayne Hills a very impressive offensive front. Click here to read more.
