Baseball: Passaic County Championship: Wayne Valley 5, Passaic Valley 4

Max Wassel hit two homeruns and Drew Sous knocked in a run to put Passaic Valley (No. 2, 19-11) up 4-0 in the Passaic County championship game. Wayne Valley (No. 5, 19-10) stormed back to win it by scoring five runs in the last two innings. Mike Tolerico blasted in three runs off two round-trippers and Zach Rosen knocked in a run to even the game, 4-4. The winning run came home when Chris Edie drew a bases loaded walk. Wayne's starting pitcher Andrew Furber surrendered four hits in four innings. Sophomore Brian Kokos earned the win, giving up just three hits in three innings of relief. Section I, Group III Semifinals: Northern Highlands 7, Wayne Valley 4

Tony Gandolfo hit a two-run triple in a three-run ninth inning for Northern Highlands (No. 16, 14-12) in the semifinals of the state North Jersey, Group 3 Tournament in Wayne. Nick Hoy ripped a one-run double in the bottom of the seventh as Wayne Valley (No. 12, 17-10) knotted the game at 4-4. Gandolfo, who also earned the win, retired the next batter with runners on first and third.

"The game could have been over in the seventh," said Valley coach Jeff Hoover, a Northern Highlands graduate. "But that's baseball. I'm still proud of my guys. We had some solid hits."

Hoy finished with 2 RBI. Zach Rosen and Anthony Verrilli knocked in a run apiece. Mike Tolerico added a double.

Baseball: Passaic County Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 6, Lakeland 3

Pete Savastano, a senior righty, flipped a five-hitter, striking out five and walking one. He also added two singles and an RBI. Marcus Virgilito hit a triple, a single and drove in two runs. K.C. Abel contributed a double, a single and an RBI for Wayne Valley (No. 5, 17-9). Mike Tolerico clubbed in two runs for the winners. Jon Allard homered for Lakeland (No. 4, 14-11).

Baseball: Passaic County Quarterfinals: Pompton Lakes 3, Waye Hills 2

Alex Ott of Pompton Lakes, a senior lefty headed for the University of Pennsylvania, pitched a four-hitter with eight strikes, when third-seeded Pompton Lakes beat sixth-seeded Wayne Hills in the semifinals of the Passaic County Tournament in Pompton Lakes. He also had three singles and scored twice.

Justin Avedissian had a hit and two RBI for Hills. Tyler Rubino, Kevin Solomon, and Chris Amato had the other hits for Hills (15-12)

Boys Lacrosse: Non Public Group B Semifinals: Pingry 8, DePaul 7

Sophomore Middie Pat Lackey scored his first goal of the season with 46 seconds remaining in regulation to give Pingry the edge in the semifinal round of the Non-Public B state tournament in Wayne. Lackey's goal was even more improbable as it was scored a man-down after Pingry (7-11) had committed a penalty with just over a minute remaining in the game. Matt Damstrom scored three goals and added an assist, Chris Albanese chipped in with two goals and Dylan Westerhold made nine saves for Pingry. Joe Moreno and Mike Caposella each scored twice for DePaul (16-3), which received 13 saves from Alex Pfeiffer.

Baseball: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 6, West Milford 3

Shortstop K.C. Abel collected a double and two singles and delivered three key runs for Wayne Valley (No. 12, 16-9) in the quarterfinals of the Section I, Group III tournament in West Milford. Abel and Nick Hoy each hit an RBI single in the fifth when Wayne Valley scored twice to grab a 3-2 lead. Abel added a two-run double in a three-run sixth as Wayne Valley assumed a 6-2 advantage. Junior righty Andrew Furber went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and giving up two earned runs for Wayne Valley. Wayne Valley will host Northern Highlands (No. 16) in the semifinals Tuesday. Logan Pevny hit a solo home run for West Milford (18-7-1).

Baseball: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Northern Highlands 10, Wayne Hills 5

Steve Addesso, Jordan Kessel and Troy Zaffino had one RBI apiece, but Wayne Hills (No. 9, 15-11) still suffered a state tournament elimination loss to Northern Highlands (No. 16). Hills season continues Saturday when they play at Pompton Lakes in the Passaic County Tournament. Joey Gandolfo ripped a double and had four RBI and Glen Cox and Alex Sonageri each had two RBI for Northern Highlands (13-12)

Boys Lacrosse North A State Playoffs, Quarterfinals:DePaul 12, Holy Cross 5

Dan Kowal scored four goals and assisted on three others to spark DePaul in the quarterfinal round of the Non-Public B tournament at Wayne Hills. Mike Caposella added three goals and three assists, Brandon Salazar chipped in with two goals and Alex Pfeiffer made 13 saves for DePaul (16-2).

Baseball: Non Public North A State Playoffs, First Round: St. Joseph’s-Montvale 7, DePaul 0:

Gerard DeFilippo and Mike Lembo doubled, but DePaul (No. 14, 9-14) suffered a season ending loss. Ken Post went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two-run double and Brian Estevez and Rob Kaminsky each drove in a run to help lift St. Joes (No. 3).

Softball: Non Public A State Playoffs, First Round: DePaul 11, Pingry 0

Christina Martinez finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, including a three-run homer in the first inning to lead DePaul in the first round of the Non-Public A tournament in Wayne. Chelsea Batelli pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and no walks for DePaul (15-5). Chloe Carver took the loss for Pingry (7-14).

Softball: Section I, Group III State Playoffs, First Round: Old Tappan 5, Wayne Hills 3

Jen Capazzi allowed four hits and batterymate Allison Brown finished 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI for Old Tappan in North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament first-round action in Old Tappan. Capazzi struck out six and did not issue a walk for Old Tappan (20-7). Jamie Popishil went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Wayne Hills (13-12).

Baseball: Section I, Group III Playoffs, First Round: Wayne Hills 12, Tenafly 2

Troy Zaffino had a homer, a double and a single and knocked in five runs to lead Wayne Hills (No. 9, 15-9) past Tenafly (No. 8). Kevin Solomon chipped in with a home run, two singles and three RBI in an 11-hit attack for Wayne Hills. Tyler Rubino had 2 hits. Steve Levenbrook fired a four hitter.

Nick Hoy drove in Mike Tolerico with an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to give 12th-seeded Wayne Valley the edge in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Sussex. Josh Marks added an insurance run when he drove in Pete Savastano. Savastano got the win, striking out seven batters over nine innings for Wayne Valley (14-9). Scott Carroll struck out six batters over nine innings for fifth-seeded High Point (15-7).

Boys Lacrosse: State Tournament, First Round: Wayne Hills 15, Brick 3

Tenth-seeded Wayne Hills outscored No. 23 Brick to surge to a 10-1 first half lead. Alex Belgard and Chris Massood finished with four goals apiece. Doug Schweibel had three goals. Massood added three assists. Josh Weinstein had five saves.

Girls Lacrosse State Tournament Roundups

North Group I: Morris Catholic 13, DePaul 12: Kelsey Shannahan scored in the final second of regulation to nudge Morris Catholic (No. 8) past DePaul (No. 9). Mikayla Couch had five goals and Samantha Buczek had four for DePaul. Emily Barbieri added two goals and five assists. Liana Doyle had seven saves.

North Group III: Isabelle Kayal had five goals and an assist for Wayne Hills. Corey Mania had two assists.

Baseball: Passaic County Tournament First Round: Wayne Hills 6, Passaic Tech 5

Catcher Jordan Kessel ripped a home run, a single and had three RBI and three runs scored and Steve Levenbrook chipped in with two singles and an RBI for sixth-seeded Wayne Hills (14-9) in the first round of the Passaic County Tournament at Wayne Hills High. Wayne Hills travels to Pompton Lakes on Saturday for the quarterfinals. Brian Dowling allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three for Wayne Hills. Passaic Tech (3-21), the 11th seed, got a triple and two RBI from Bryan Rivera.

Baseball: Passaic County Tournament First Round: Wayne Valley 3, Eastern Christian 2

Anthony Verrilli came through with a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning for fifth-seeded Wayne Valley (13-9) in the first round of the Passaic County Tournament win over Eastern Christian (No. 12). With one away in the eighth, Nick Hoy doubled and Brian Kokos, who earned the victory in relief, walked before Verrilli delivered his game-winning hit to right-center. Eastern Christian had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a James Ainsworth sac fly.

Josh Marks homered to help lift Wayne Valley. Marcus Virgilito had three hits. Hoy and Kokos had two hits each.

Baseball: Passaic County Tournament First Round: Hawthorne 5, DePaul 3

DePaul pitcher Kevin Croucher went six innings allowing nine hits and striking out 10. DePaul struck for a run in the third and fourth. After two errors, Mike Lembo delivered Matt Betz with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, the Wayne team grabbed a 2-0 advantage when Nick Fondacaro delivered an inside-the-par home run. The ball rolled out of the reach of the center fielder and was retrieved at the softball backstop. Hawthorne, however, responded with three runs in the fifth. Claudio Petruccelli led off with a single, but Croucher struck out the next two batters. Then Kevin Hancock smashed a two-run homer over the fence in right-center and Scott Koningswood lined another homer almost to the same spot. Hancock also hit a single in the third.

Softball: Passaic County Tournament Semifinals: Pompton Lakes 4, Wayne Hills 1

Jackie Gloshinksi pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts and four walks for sixth-seeded Pompton Lakes (16-6) in the semifinal round of the Passaic County Tournament at Main Memorial Park in Clifton. Pompton Lakes scored three times in the top of the first. Rebecca VanderBrink had an RBI single, Liz Medino squeezed across a run and VanderBrink scored on on a wild pitch. Wayne Hills, 13-11 and seeded second, got a home run from Stephanie Zygmunt in the second. Steph Pasquale launched a long solo homer in the sixth for Pompton Lakes, which will play the winner of last night's West Milford vs. Clifton semifinal for the championship tonight at 7:30 at Main Memorial.

Junior right hander Donnie Cusick flipped a six-hitter striking out one and walked none and K.C. Abel hit a double, a single and knocked in a run for Wayne Valley (12-9) in Little Falls. Drew Sous had two singles for Passaic Valley (16-7).

Justin Avedessian hit a solo homer for Wayne Hills (13-9).

Steve Levenbrook struck out five in pitching five-hit ball through five innings to win it and Steve Addesso followed with two scoreless, hitless innings of relief for Wayne Hills (13-8) in Wayne. Tyler Rubino doubled in a run and scored twice and Kevin Solomon contributed a run-scoring triple for Wayne Hills. George Monsen was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored for DePaul (8-11).

Wayne Hills (12-8) will start its defense of its 2009 Passaic County title by taking on Wayne’s Passaic Tech (No. 11, 3-17)Saturday. Hills defeated Tech in the regular season Monday, 7-1. Kevin Solomon had two hits and three RBI. Justin Ferrarella had two hits and two RBI. Chris Amato and Jordan Kessel knocked in one run apiece.

Golf: Anthony Alex, Wayne Hills win NJTCC Passaic championship

This time, fabulous freshman golfer Anthony Alex and Wayne Hills didn’t come anywhere near a playoff against a crosstown rival.Alex instead led the Patriots to the NJTCC Passaic Division championship Monday to help soothe the hurt of losing last month’s County championship to DePaul in a playoff. Wayne Hills won the NJTCC title with a shoot-five, count-four score of 337 at windy Bowling Green Golf Club to finish six strokes ahead of Wayne Valley and seven ahead of DePaul.

"The whole rivalry [among] us, Wayne Valley and DePaul has been pretty competitive this year," Wayne Hills senior Peter Samylenko said. Read More

Lacrosse: Wayne Hills Boys and Girls Teams Sweep Passaic County Tournament

BOYS: Wayne Hills boys lacrosse coach Marc Jacobson stood in front of his team Saturday night, icy water dripping down his shoulders. It was windy and cold, and the players had done this to him. But Jacobsen didn't seem to mind.

"There's no game ball tonight," Jacobson boomed in the postgame huddle. "Because every single one of you got us here. I have never been more proud of a team than I am right now."

The Wayne Hills girls lacrosse team didn’t shy away from the burden that came
with being the top seed in the first Passaic County tournament.

"It’s a lot of pressure," Wayne Hills coach Marie Tripp said. "And we definitely felt it."

But when it mattered most, the Patriots were able to deal with the pressure and perform. And that made the most important moment of their season even sweeter.

Jordan Kessel, a senior catcher, highlighted an 11-hit attack with a home run, a double, a single, four RBI and two runs for Wayne Hills in Wayne. It was the fourth straight victory for Wayne Hills (11-7). Pitcher Steve Levenbrook tossed a five-hitter, striking out three and walking two, and added a double, a single and two RBI for Wayne Hills. First baseman Brandon Ramos singled and scored for Clifton (8-9).

Mike Lembo and George Monsen of DePaul (7-9) each drove in a run in the fifth inning.

Troy Zaffino hit a double, a single, added an RBI and two runs for Wayne Hills. Travis Kubasta collected two doubles, an RBI and a run for Fair Lawn (10-8).

DePaul (7-8) averted a shutout when Ryan Carroll launched a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.

Tony Zaffino, making his first varsity start on the mound, hurled a six-hitter striking out five and walking four for Wayne Hills. Warren Hartman hit a homer and had two RBI for Ramapo (6-9).
