Dan Kowal threw two touchdown passes for DePaul (1-2). First, he hit George Monsen with a 20-yard TD pass. Next, he threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Dan Foesel . As far as high school football rivalries are concerned, Wayne had always been blessed with two gems. In the opinions of many, nothing beats the rivalry between Wayne Valley and Passaic Valley. The two schools have been meeting on the gridiron since 1952. The Wayne Hills-Ramapo rivalry has always been viewed in a similar light, although thanks to the NJSIAA's realignment plan, that game won't be played this year. With realignment still not complete, there is speculation that this annual tussle could be renewed in 2010. The teams could conceivably reunite in the 2009 playoffs. For most area football fans, those annual games were always considered must-sees. Wayne fans, it reasonably follows, wanted to see the Township's high school teams prevail over their neighbors. But while Valley and Hills are busy squaring off against its neighbors, one baffling mystery remained — how come Wayne's two football teams rarely get to play each other? Read More

DePaul scored on its first possession when Dan Farley rushed for a six yard score. The first half ended with the score deadlocked, 7-7. St. Joseph's took over in the second half. The Spartans squandered four scoring opportunities with four turnovers inside St. Joes territory.
"We saw they were getting tired," said Kamal Hogan, who had 125 rushing yards for St. Joes. He also rushed for a score and caught a 40 yard touchdown pass from Devin O'Connor.
"Once he got into the open he was tough," DePaul coach John McKenna said. "We have to do a good job keeping runners in the box. I don't think our defense played very well. The schedule doesn't get any easier, so we have figure a few things out."
Farley was involved with all three touchdowns. He had two touchdown passes, in addition to his early TD. In the third quarter, he found Joe Moreno for an eight yard touchdown toss. Football: Clifton 2, Wayne Valley 0
Corey Meyer tackled Wayne Valley punter Pete Savastano in the end zone late in the third quarter for a safety. That was the lone score in the Mustangs’ 2-0 victory over the Indians."I thought the snap was a little to his left," Valley head coach Brian O'Connor said. "But Pete should have had it. He bobbled it a little and by the time he had control (Meyer) was all over him."
Unfortunately for Valley, they had to punt the ball twice on that possession. On the first punt, Clifton was flagged for an illegal block. Because of that illegal block, the Clifton return man was able to return the ball deep into Valley territory. Savastano, unaware of the flag, tackled the runner, but was flagged for a face mask. The penalties off set, forcing Valley to punt again. That was when the safety occurred.
It was a rough stretch for Savastano, but he was hardly the only one to blame. Normally sure handed Anthony Verrilli had two drops, including one in the end zone and one late in the game. Mike Castles also had a key drop late. Savastano also had two fourth period interceptions.
O'Connor thought that those passes should have been caught and said the other gaffes were "certainly avoidable." On the other hand, the coach placed most of the blame on another culprit - the rainy, windy weather conditions.
"We had lots of opportunities, but we didn't make the plays," he said. "You can't really blame a kid though under these conditions. The weather played a big factor."
Clifton didn't fare much better. They fumbled the ball seven times. Fortunately for the Mustangs, they recovered the ball five of those times.
WV got big defensive efforts from Michael Fusco and Andrew DeFilippis, who had 14 tackles apiece. Savastano had 10 tackles. DeFilippis and Brandon Castelbuono had fumble recoveries. Greg LaNeve led the offense with 58 yards rushing.

Wayne Valley Football Hall Of Fame
Wayne Valley football coach Brian O’Connor spearheaded the forming of the team's Hall of Fame. The first five inductions were made on August 28, during the team’s annual preseason beefsteak at the Wayne PAL. The inductees included: Mike Radtke (linebacker/tackle/fullback 1963-1965), Ted Hanenberg (lineman/linebacker 1968-1970), Fred Keil (assistant coach 1956-1959; head coach 1983-1988), Bob Bishop (lineman 1965-1967; assistant coach 1974-1995, 2003-present; head coach 1996-2000), and Aaron Hall (Fullback/linebacker, 1988-1991). The inductees will also be honored at halftime of the team’s Oct. 2 game at home against Paramus.
