Baseball: Wayne Valley 2009 Year In Review

5/19/09: Passaic County Quarterfinals: Wayne Hills 4, Wayne Valley 2: Travis Della Volpe starred for top-seeded Wayne Hills (14-7), tossing a five-hitter with five strikeouts and blasting a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning. Third baseman Matt Karcz hit two singles, had an RBI and scored a run . Ryan Durr tripled and scored for Wayne Valley (10-10), the eighth seed. Wayne Valley pitcher Pete Savastano allowed just five hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five.

5/18/09: Wayne Valley 13, Ridgewood 3: Zach Rosen was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and five RBI and Jon Dubnoff went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI for Wayne Valley (10-9) in Wayne.

5/15/09: Wayne Valley 14, Passaic Tech 2: Ryan Durr and Pete Savastano clubbed in two runs apiece. Jon Dubnoff, Luke Rigoglioso, Andrew Furber and Matt Karcz knocked in a run apiece. Durr earned the win.

5/8/09: Passaic County Tournament, First Round: Wayne Valley 2, Eastern Christian 1: Pete Savastano recorded a five-hitter, with five strikeouts for Wayne Valley (No. 8, 8-9). Early on in the affair, it appeared that Savastano would get plenty of support. Ryan Durr, Valley's right fielder, made a sparkling play to start the game when he dove to grab a liner in the right-center field gap.
In the bottom of first inning, the Indians blasted four singles and scored twice off Eastern Christian (No. 9) ace Brian Sietsma. With one out in the first stanza, Valley’s K.C. Abel singled and crossed over on a slow roller to second by Ryan Durr. With two outs, Matt Karcz singled Abel to third and then stole second. Jon Dubnoff added a single up the gap to plate both Abel and Karcz.
Wayne Valley will play at top seeded Wayne Hills in the quarterfinals Saturday. Valley's full focus will be on the county tournament. They failed to earn a bid to the state tournament.

5/3/09: Wayne Valley 6, West Orange 2: Andrew Furber pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one hit. Zach Rosen had three hits, with a triple and two runs for Wayne Valley. 5/1/09: Wayne Valley 5, Pompton Lakes 2: K.C. Abel, Matt Karcz and Zach Rosen knocked in runs for Wayne. Ryan Durr earned the win.

5/2/09: Montville 10, Wayne Valley 0: Mark Traupmann, Anthony Verrilli, Marcus Virgilito and K.C. Abel each singled for Wayne Valley (5-9).

4/29/09: Bloomfield 6, Wayne Valley 4: Zach Rosen had a double and a solo home run for Wayne Valley (5-8). Matt Karcz had two RBI, but Valley still lost. Mark Traupmann had two hits.

4/27/09: West Milford 3, Wayne Valley 2: Pete Savastano gave up just three hits in six innings of work. Despite his valiant effort on the hill, Valley still lost, 3-2. Ryan Durr hit a single and knocked in Wayne’s only run. Valley had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but West Milford catcher Matt Hedges picked off the lead runner when he threw to second baseman Taylor Pevny. Josh Jensen threw three-hit ball through six innings to win it for the Highlanders.

4/25/09: Clifton 1, Wayne Valley 0: Andrew Furber went nine innings and struck out 10 while yielding two hits for Wayne Valley (5-6).

4/24/09: Passaic Valley 9, Wayne Valley 6: K.C. Abel homered for Wayne Valley (5-5). Ryan Durr, Mark Traupmann and Matt Karcz knocked in runs. Mike DeLuccia and Chris Zaneski had two RBI apiece for PV.

4/23/09: Wayne Valley 8, Passaic Tech 2: Matt Karcz and Pete Savastano clubbed in two runs apiece for WV. K.C. Abel and Zach Rosen both knocked in runs.

4/20/09: Wayne Valley 10, Hawthorne 4: Andrew Furber struck out seven in Valley’s 10-4 triumph over Hawthorne. Mark Traupmann hit a home run, knocked in two runs and scored two. Luke Rigoglioso added two singles and two RBI for Wayne Valley (4-4). Pete Savastano and Matt Karcz plated two runs as well. Marcus Virgilito, Ryan Durr and K.C. Abel had two hits apiece.

4/17/09: Wayne Valley 4, West Orange 2: Marcus Virgilito had three hits and two RBI for Valley. Luke Rigoglioso and Anthony Verrilli batted in runs. Pete Savastano fanned nine batters to record the win. Tim Wronka and Zach Rosen had two hits each. Luke Rigoglioso helped with a single, RBI and two runs in the victory.

4/16/09: Pequannock 10, Wayne Valley 8: Pete Savastano had two RBI for Valley. Jon Dubnoff, Luke Rigoglioso, Mark Traupmann and K.C. Abel added one each.

4/14/09: Wayne Hills 10, Wayne Valley 1: Travis Della Volpe knocked in two runs and earned the win for Wayne Hills. Christian Avedessian, Jorden Kessel, Rich Mertrud and Kevin Solomon also batted in runs. K.C. Abel knocked in Valley's lone run.

4/14/09 : Millburn 2, Wayne Valley 1: Matt Karcz knocked in Valley's lone run. 4/9/09:
Montville 2, Wayne Valley 0: Luke Rigoglioso, Jon Dubnoff and Pete Savastano had Valley’s hits.

4/2/09: Wayne Valley 13, DePaul 0: Sophomore K.C. Abel belted two home runs, including a grand slam, to lift Wayne Valley to an opening day win. Abel finished with seven RBI. Pitcher Pete Savastano allowed just three hits. Jon Dubnoff knocked in three runs. Ryan Durr and Mark Trauppmann batted in two runs apiece. Matt Carlson suffered the loss for DePaul.
