Baseball: 2009 Wayne Hills Year In Review

5/25/09: Passaic County Tournament, Championship: Wayne Hills 12, Pompton Lakes 0: Top seeded Wayne Hills blanked Pompton Lakes (No. 2) to claim its second ever county title. The last came in 2000. Hills lost to Hawthorne in last year's final.
Wayne Hills wasted little time scoring an unearned run in the first inning off starter Mark Sarrao of Pompton Lakes (17-7). Eric Della Volpe singled, stole second and scored when Kevin Solomon's fly ball was dropped for an error.

Travis Della Volpe, Eric's twin, presented Wayne Hills with a 3-0 lead in the third when he smashed a 340-foot, two-run homer to dead center field.

Travis collected a homer, a double, a single and a walk in four at bats, knocked in four runs and scored three. Eric added a double, two singles and three runs.

Wayne Hills sent up 10 men in the fourth, when it scored five runs to grab an 8-0 advantage.

With two men on base, Chris Avedissian laid down a bunt. The catcher pounced on the ball but threw wildly to first and the ball ended up in dead ball territory, allowing all three runners to score. Travis Della Volpe and Jordan Kessel each added an RBI single.

Wayne Hills wrapped it up in the sixth thanks to Kessel. Travis Della Volpe doubled home his brother and, after Kevin Solomon walked, Kessel launched a three-run homer to left to end it on the 10-run mercy rule.

5/24/09: Passaic County Tournament, Semifinals, Wayne Hills 7, Lakeland 2: Mike Zangrilli had three RBI for top seeded Hills (19-9). Ryan Daddurno added two RBI. Jordan Kessel tacked on another. Travis DellaVolpe earned the win. Hills will meet Pompton Lakes (No. 2) in the final on Monday.

5/23/09: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Sparta 4, Wayne Hills 2: Jordan Kessel had two hits for Wayne Hills (No. 12, 18-9). Sparta was the No. 4 seed. Wayne now turns it attention to the Passaic County Tournament. The top seeded Patriots play Lakeland (No. 4) today.

5/20/09: Section I, Group III First Round: Wayne Hills 3, Tenafly 2: Brian Dowling helped Hills (No. 12, 17-7) ) pull off the upset in Tenafly (No. 5), 3-2. The sophomore carried a no-hitter through 4 innings. Although he gave up three hits and two runs in the fifth, it turned out to be his only blip. He held the Tigers hitless in the other six innings. Mike Zangrilli was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kevin Solomon went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lift Hills offensively. Hills will play at Sparta (No. 4) in the quarterfinals Friday.

5/19/09: Passaic County Quarterfinals: Wayne Hills 4, Wayne Valley 2: Travis Della Volpe starred for top-seeded Wayne Hills (14-7), tossing a five-hitter with five strikeouts and blasting a three-run homer in a four-run fourth inning. Third baseman Matt Karcz hit two singles, had an RBI and scored a run . Ryan Durr tripled and scored for Wayne Valley (10-10), the eighth seed. Wayne Valley pitcher Pete Savastano allowed just five hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five.

5/15/09: Wayne Hills , Pascack Valley 4: Mike Zangrilli had three RBI and Rich Mertrud had two for Hills.

5/14/09: Wayne hills 4, Demarest 2: Alex Bellias homered for Hills (13-7-1). Brian Dowling knocked in a run. Eric DellaVolpe picked up the win.

5/9/09: Passaic County Tournament First Round, Wayne Hills 16, Eastside 0: The top seeded Patriots accumulated three runs in the bottom of the first. Alex Bellias, who finished with two hits, three runs scored and two RBI, began the rally with a one-out double into right field. Kevin Solomon belted a three run triple and Brian Dowling added an RBI single. Solomon helped lead Hills by going 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Eric Della Volpe, Travis Della Volpe, Mike Zangrilli and Dowling had two RBI apiece for the Patriots. Hills also received a strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Steve Levenbrook (2-1). He threw a five inning two-hitter, striking out six.
Wayne Hills will host Wayne Valley (No. 8) in the quarterfinals Saturday.

5/5/09: Wayne Hills 6, Fair Lawn 2: Mike Zangrilli earned the win and knocked in two runs. Ryan Daddurno, Alex Bellias and Brian Dowling batted in one run apiece for Hills

5/3/09: Ramapo 10, Wayne Hills 4: Ryan Daddurno had two RBI and Kevin Solomon and Mike Zangrilli had one apiece.

5/2/09: Old Tappan 7, Wayne Hills 5: Alex Bellias, Eric DellaVolpe and Christian Avedessian knocked in runs for Hills.

4/29/09: Mahwah 19, Wayne Hills 14: Kevin Solomon clubbed in five runs, but Hills still lost. Jorden Kessel knocked in three runs.

4/24/09: Wayne Hills 10, Pascack Hills 8: Eric DellaVolpe plated three runs for Hills. Mike Zangrilli and Kevin Solomon knocked in two runs apiece.

4/20/09: Greater Wayne Tournament Championship: Travis Della Volpe belted two home runs, knocked in six runs and scored four and Kevin Solomon launched two three-run homers for Wayne Hills (7-2) at the Greater Wayne Tournament at Passaic Tech in Wayne. Roybellys Hernandez hit a home run, two singles and had three RBI for Passaic Tech (3-5).

4/18/09: Wayne Hills 17, Pascack Hills 8: Alex Bellias, Travis DellaVolpe and Kevin Solomon had four RBI apiece.

4/14/09: Wayne Hills 10, Wayne Valley 1: Travis Della Volpe knocked in two runs and earned the win for Wayne Hills. Christian Avedessian, Jorden Kessel, Rich Mertrud and Kevin Solomon also batted in runs. K.C. Abel knocked in Valley's lone run.

4/14/09: Northern Highlands 4, Wayne Hills 2: Rich Mertrud batted in both runs for Wayne Hills.

4 /7/09: Wayne Hills 5, Fair Lawn 2: Travis Della Volpe and Jordan Kessel hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning for Wayne Hills. Winning pitcher Brian Dowling pitched the last two innings giving up one hit, striking out three and walking three.

4/3/09: Wayne Hills 4, Old Tappan 3: Sophomore Brian Dowling fired a three hitter for Hills. Travis DellaVolpe, Christian Avedessian and Mike Zangrilli knocked in one run apiece.
