Baseball: 2008 Wayne Hills Season In Review

/26/08: Passaic County Final: Hawthorne 5, Wayne Hills 3

Hawthorne (No. 9, 18-8), which has won 13 of its last 15 games, fell behind 2-1, but rallied to win with four runs in the fifth inning. Angelo Guarnieri led off with a single to right and Jim Zenock reached on an error by the third baseman. Another error at third on a grounder by Matt Goitz scored Guarnieri. Jared Lerner served as a courtesy runner for Goitz. John Hulme then hit a two-run double down the right-field line and Jim Geraghty's single delivered Hulme with the fourth run.

Hawthorne grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first. After Zenock walked and Goitz singled, Hulme singled to left and, when the ball was misplayed, Guarnieri scored.

Wayne Hills (No. 2, 19-8) scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Daddurno singled and, with two outs, Jason Evans launched a two-run homer to left. Jeff Salerno followed with a double but the next batter ended the inning with a fly out to right.

Trailing 5-2, Wayne Hills made some noise in the sixth. Steve Thomas started with a home run over the fence in left. After an out, Kevin Solomon was hit by a pitch and Daddurno walked. Goitz, the pitcher, got a force out at third and a strikeout to prevent further damage.

Hills pitcher Chris Lala concluded with a seven-hitter, striking out 12 and walking four.

5/24/08: Passaic County Semifinals: Wayne Hills 12, Eastside 6

5/24/08: Third-seeded Paterson Eastside (13-11) took a 1-0 lead on Emilio Fernandez's home run in the first inning, but Wayne Hills took the lead for good with a five-run third with Kevin Solomon and Jeff Salerno each hitting a two-run home run.

Eastside, however, stayed close, 5-4, after a three-run fourth highlighted by run-scoring infield singles by Jose Fernandez and Emilio Fernandez and a throwing error.

But Wayne Hills wrapped it up in the fifth by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs against three Eastside pitchers. Jason Evans delivered a two-run single and two runs scored on an error. There were two errors and three walks in the inning.

``We came up big and got some timely hits when we needed to,'' Solomon, a sophomore left fielder, said. ``We knew it was going to be a battle, and playing here with the short fences, anything can happen.''

Wayne Hills starter Travis Della Volpe pitched a complete game and improving to 6-2. He allowed 10 hits, struck out eight, walked two and gave up four earned runs.



5/21/08: Wayne Hills 10, Bergenfield 7: Matt Greene and Alex Bellias knocked in two runs apiece. Nick Cornwell earned the win.

5/20/08: Section I, Group III Playoffs, First Round: Roxbury 9, Wayne Hills 4: Fifth seeded Wayne Hills suffered a shocking first round loss. Steve Spazante and Matt Greene each had two hits, a run and an RBI for Hills (17-7). Roxbury (No. 12, 15-10) will take on Morris Hills in the sectional quarterfinals on Friday. Morris Hills (No. 4) knocked off Wayne Valley (No. 13). Hills will now turn its attention to the Passaic County Tournament. They will play Eastside in thet semifinal on Saturday. Hills could play Wayne Valley in the county championship game. Valley plays Hawthorne in the other semifinal game.

5/18/08: Passaic County Tournament Quarterfinals, Wayne Hills 11, Eastern Christian 1: Travis Della Volpe pitched a six-inning four-hitter, striking out nine and walking three for second-seeded Wayne Hills (17-6). Matt Greene collected three singles, knocked in a run and scored two. Kevin Solomon hit a double and drove in three runs. Scott DeJong had a double, a single and an RBI and Tyler Westra added a single and scored a run for seventh-seeded Eastern Christian (11-8).

5/14/08: Wayne Hills 12, Pascack Hills 2: Travis DellaVolpe clubbed in four runs. Steve Spazante, Jason Evans and Jeff Salerno knocked in two runs apiece. Chris Lala picked up the win.

5/11/08: Passaic County Tournament, First Round, Wayne Hills10, Hawthorne Christian 0: Travis Della Volpe slugged a two-run home run and Steve Spazante had a double, two singles and two RBI. Steve Thomas added a double, a single and two RBI for Wayne Hills (No. 2, 15-5). Matt Greene (4-1) hurled a five-inning six-hitter, striking out six and walking three for Wayne Hills. Hawthorne Christian (No. 15) is 6-12.

5/9/08: Wayne Hills 12, Northern Highlands 7: Hills scored (14-5) scored all its runs in the second inning. Kevin Solomon and Steve Spazante drove in two runs each. Travis DellaVolpe had two doubles. Pitcher Chris Lala struck out 10 batters.

5/6/08: Wayne Hills 3, Fair Lawn 2: Steve Thomas and Alex Bellias knocked in runs for Hills (13-5). Matt Taylor scattered six hits enroute to the victory.

5/2/08: Wayne Hills 2, Demarest 0: Matt Greene fired a complete game five-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks. He threw just 78 pitches as Wayne Hills improved to 12-5.

4/26/08: Wayne Hills 14, Bergenfield 10: Jeff Salerno clubbed in five runs for Hills (9-4). Steve Spazante plated three runs. Kevin Soloman and Matt Taylor hit in two runs apiece. Matt Greene earned the victory.

4/24/08: Wayne Hills 7, Indian Hills 1: Winning pitcher Chris Lala spun a complete game four-hitter with six strikeouts and three walks for Wayne Hills (8-4). Steve Spazante had a double, two singles and two RBI. Indian Hills is 6-4.

4/20/08: Greater Wayne Tournament, Championship: Wayne Hills 7, Passaic Tech 5: Travis Della Volpe threw an eight-hitter with five strikeouts. He also slugged a two-run home run. Jason Evans hit two singles and delivered a run. Ryan Daddurno and Kevin Solomon each knocked in a run for Wayne Hills (7-4). Larry Banks and Robert Rosado had two singles apiece for Passaic Tech (2-7).

4/18/08: Mahwah 11, Wayne Hills 1: Chris Lala suffered the defeat.

4/17/08: Pascack Hills10, Wayne Hills 3: Jeff Salenro hit in two runs for Wayne. Jason Evans batted in another.

4/15/08: Pascack Valley 4, Wayne Hills 0: Matt Greene went 2-for-3 with a double, but Hills (6-2) still lost. Jason Evans had Wayne’s only other hits. Travis DellaVolpe surrendered just six, but lost for just the first time all season.

4/12/08: Greater Wayne Tournament: Wayne Hills 10, Wayne Valley 1: Jeff Salerno and Steve Thomas had three RBI apiece as Hills (6-1) rocked Valley (3-2) at Passaic Tech. Matt Greene knocked in two runs. Marcus Virgilito hit in Valley's lone run. Hills will play Passaic Tech in the final next weekend. Valley will take on Hawthorne in the consolation game.

4/11/08: Ramsey 8, Wayne Hills 7: Wayne Hills (5-1) came up short in this battle of the unbeatens. Ryan Daddurno plated three runs for Hills. Jeff Salerno and Matt Greene also knocked in runs. Ramsey is 6-0.

4/10/08: Wayne Hills 5, Northern Highlands 1: Travis Della Volpe pitched a complete-game one-hitter, allowing one run, striking out 10 and walking two for Wayne Hills (5-0). First baseman Jeff Salerno collected a double, two singles and two RBI. Jason Evans had two singles and scored twice. Photos

4/8/08: Wayne Hills 6, Fair Lawn 5: Jason Evans batted in two runs for Hills (4-0). Travis Della Volpe, Matt Greene, Jordan Cassel and Kevin Soloman knocked in one run each.

4/3/08: Wayne Hills 7, Ramapo 2: Travis Della Volpe threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks to lead Wayne Hills (2-0). Jason Evans had two singles and an RBI. Jeff Salerno had a single and two RBI for Wayne Hills (2-0).

4/2/08: Wayne Hills 4, Old Tappan 3: Jeff Salerno knocked in two runs and Matt Greene knocked in one as Hills won its opener. Chris Lala earned the win.
