5/25/08: Fourth-seeded Wayne Valley held a 3-2 lead, but Hawthorne tied it in the sixth. Jim Zenock singled up the middle and, after Matt Goitz walked, John Savoie doubled off the fence in center field to drive in Zenock. With no outs, it appeared Hawthorne would have a big inning, but Derrick Bligh struck out the next three batters.

Hawthorne won it by scoring twice in the seventh. Catcher Anthony Cruz walked on four pitches and Nick Gnade came in as a courtesy runner. Jared Lerner sacrificed Gnade to second and Angelo Guarnieri came through with a single, scoring Gnade. Zenock followed with a homer to left field.

After pitcher Savoie got the the first Wayne Valley batter out in the seventh, Brendan Kalinowski walked and Max Saeman singled, but the final two batters struck out.

Savoie tossed a seven-hitter, striking out eight and walking three. Bligh, too, allowed seven hits, struck out 10 and walked three while pitching a complete game.

Wayne Valley received doubles from Ryan Durr and Brendan Kalinowski and a two-run single from Bligh in the first inning.

5/19/08: Section I, Group III First Rounds, Morris Hills 3, Wayne Valley 2: Derrick Bligh had an RBI single in the third inning for 13th-seeded Wayne Valley (12-11). Brendan Kalinowksi had an RBI in the seventh inning, but Wayne’s rally fell short. Morris Hills (No. 4, 18-8) will play Roxbury (No. 12) in the next round. Roxbury stunned Wayne Hills (No. 5) in another first round game. WV will play Hawthorne in the Passaic County semifinals Saturday. They could end up playing Wayne Hills in the final Monday. Hills plays Eastside in the other semifinal game.

5/18/08: Passaic County Tournament, Wayne Valley 5, Pompton 4

It appeared that Pompton Lakes had taken the lead in the sixth inning. Tim Lindberg had an infield single and a pinch runner entered. After an out, Mike Ferriera ripped his second triple, but the pinch runner was called out for missing third for the second out. The next batter grounded out to second.

"He totally missed the bag," said Valley coach Jeff Hoover. "It happened right in front of our dugout. We all saw it. I spoke to the umpire afterwards. He said, 'Jeff, I hated to make that call. But the kids clearly missed the bag.' I don't think anybody would want to make that call in that situation. It was the right call, though. He had no choice."

In the bottom of the sixth, with the score still tied, Brendan Kalinowski tripled. With two away, Derrick Bligh was intentionally walked. Mike Mango made Pompton Lakes pay. He hit a single up the middle to present Wayne Valley with a 5-4 victory.

``I guess they thought I wasn't that good of a hitter but I came through,'' Mango said. ``I hit a fastball off the end of the bat.''

Wayne Valley scored three runs in the first inning with Bligh, the winning pitcher, singling in a run. Anthony DeMattia walked with the bases loaded and Luke Rigoglioso reached on an error that scored Bligh.

Pompton Lakes (11-6), the fifth-seed, tied it with three unearned runs in the second. Pompton Lakes grabbed a 4-3 advantage in the fifth when Sean Carey singled, stole second and came in on Kyle Aug's base hit.

"It should have not come down to that (the controversial call in the sixth inning)," Hoover said. "It shouldn't have been close at that point. We gave them three runs with those errors. We let them hang around."

Wayne Valley knotted it in its half of the fifth. Anthony DeMattia doubled over the head of the left fielder and scored on a single to center by Mark Traupmann.
