Relieved Pompton Lakes players,
coaches and fans finally began celebrating as senior linebacker Jake Valdes
emerged from an enormous mess of players with the football Friday night. With
third-seeded Pompton Lakes
suddenly clinging to a 20-14 lead, Valdes recovered Hasbrouck Heights’
onside kick with 1:04 to play and secured the Cardinals’ third straight state
championship in the North 1, Group 1 final at MetLife Stadium.
