Football: Teaneck 35, Wayne Valley 21

Wayne Valley, winners of its first four games this season, lost to previously winless Teaneck. It was Valley's fourth straight loss and badly damages its playoff prospects. Valley currently occupies the 8th and final playoff spot. But Paramus (4-3), which trails Valley by three power points, still has a game left on the ledger. If Paramus beats Wayne Hills Friday, they will certainly leap frog Valley. Even if Paramus loses to Wayne Hills, they may earn enough residual power points to leap frog Valley.

Teaneck never trailed against Valley. They took the lead  on the second play of the game, a 65-yard rush by Malik Lee, and never looked back. Devante Hicks added an 82 yard touchdown run Teaneck. Devaunte Locardia caught three touchdowns from Elijah Bethea (46, 10, 31 yards)

Valley's Anthony Landberg kept things close with 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Bethea led Teaneck with 213 passing yards.

Football: St. Joseph Montvale 48, DePaul 27

Joe Moreno scored on rushes of 4 and 11 yards for DePaul (3-5). Terrell Vassell added a touchdown on an 11-yard strike from Zach Bednarczyk. Riley Clark kicked 40 and 29 yard field goals. Bednarczyk threw for 168 yards. Moreno compiled 111 rushing yards. DePaul needs winless Raritan to be St. John Vianney this coming weekend in order to qualify for the playoffs.

"It unlikely," says DePaul coach John McKenna. We've lost to the teams that are No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (Don Bosco, Bergen Catholic, St. Joes, Paramus Catholic and Pascack Valley) in the (Bergen Record) Top 25. Name another team that had to do that!"

Football: Wayne Hills 34, Passaic Tech 7

Wayne Hills (5-3) beat Passaic Tech (6-2) to clinch its 17th straight playoff berth and its 23rd playoff berth in head coach Chris Olsen's 26 years at Hills. The Patriots will probably be on the road in the playoffs,  likely making tonight's game with PCT Olsen's last home game at Wayne Hills.

Cristian Rodriguez ran for two touchdowns to lead Wayne Hills' offense.Rodriguez opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter and added a 2-yard score in the second. Robby Schiller also broke off a 55-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Schiller finished with 141 yards on 14 carries. Rodriguez ran for 76 yards. Justin DeGroat threw a 9-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to Ryan Kardux.

For Passaic Tech, Jared Quintero connected with Marquise Hansford for a 40-yard touchdown pass.
Issac Williams and Thomas Jefferson rushed for a combined 1,538 yards and 16 touchdowns in the PCTs' first seven games. Hills limited them to a combined 54 yards on 14 carries.

"Our defense came out on fire," said Rodriguez. "They didn't let up much yardage until we put in the [second string] at the end of the game. We stopped their offense completely, the whole game."

"We feel real good about [reaching the playoffs] because I think our history in the playoffs is pretty much as good as anybody's," said Chris Olsen. "Now that we're in, I think our chances are as good as anybody's. I don't think they wanted to be the team that didn't make the playoffs, when expectations were so high in the preseason, and rightfully so."

Cassandra Gerard caged the game-winning goal off an assist from Maria Dentinger as Wayne Valley nipped North Hunterdon, 1-0, in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament in Wayne. Alex Piekarz turned away four shots in the shutout for Wayne Valley (13-6). Bridget Walsh made six saves for North Hunterdon (0-17-1).

Football: Wayne Hills 28, Passaic Valley 0

Robby Schiller and Ed Moskal scored two touchdowns apiece to lead Wayne Hills to a 28-0 victory over Passaic Valley yesterday in Little Falls. Hills (4-3) likely needs to beat Passaic Tech (6-1) at home next Friday to qualify for the State Playoffs by the 8-game cutoff.

Against Passaic Valley, Moskal provided Wayne Hills with a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with his 33-yard punt return. Schiller finished with 110 yards on 13 carries, including a 51-yard burst in the third quarter that extended the lead to 14-0. Justin DeGroat found Moskal with a 12-yard pass and Schiller ran for a 23-yard touchdown to close out the scoring for Wayne Hills. Rob Levine had 9 tackles to lead the Hills defense.

Football: Northern Highlands 49, Wayne Valley 24

After storming to a 4-0 start this season, Wayne Valley has lost it's third straight game to fall to 4-3. This makes Saturday's game with winless Teaneck crucial in assuring Wayne Valley a State playoff spot after the 8-game cutoff.  Bobby Brown scored five touchdowns to lead Northern Highlands (4-3) past Valley.

Luke Primerano ran for 134 yards, including a 61 yard touchdown, for Valley. He also passed for 120 yards. Anthony Landberg scored on rushes to 5 and 1 yards. He finished with 76 yards rushing and also had 3 catches. Christian Gilberti led Valley receivers with 4 catches. Dave Drozjock added 3 receptions.

Football: DePaul 73, Tenafly 40

Joe Moreno carried 20 times for 154 yards and five touchdowns to lead a potent ground game that sparked DePaul to a 73-40 victory over Tenafly last night in Wayne. Moreno's effort led three backs to gain over 100 yards for DePaul. Kareem Walker carried six times for 117 yards and three touchdowns and Zach Bednarczyk had eight carries for 125 yards and two TDs for DePaul.

Walker scored on two 20-yard runs in the first quarter and Moreno ran for a touchdown to help DePaul open a 23-14 lead. Moreno ran for three TDs and Bednarczyk ran for a score to highlight a 27-point second quarter that left DePaul with a 50-26 halftime lead. Moreno, Orlando Barker and Walker added touchdown runs in the second half for DePaul.

Steve Sobo threw four of his five touchdown passes to Justin Waller and also ran for a touchdown for Tenafly.

Passaic County Tournament Girls Semifinals: Wayne Hills 3, Wayne Valley 1

Third-seeded Wayne Hills recorded 15 shots and defeated second-seeded Wayne Valley, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Passaic County Tournament in Wayne. Nickolette Driesse, Sarah Bendl, and Sabrina Sirni scored for Wayne Hills (11-1-2), which also got nine saves from goalie Bjonda Ademi. Becky Strummolo made 12 stops for Wayne Valley (9-2). Hills will play top-seeded Clifton next week in the final.

Passaic County Boys Soccer Semifinals: DePaul 4, Wayne Hills 1

Luis Mendoza scored twice as top-seed DePaul defeated fourth-seeded Wayne Hills, 4-1, in Wayne to advance to the championship round of the Passaic County Tournament. Nick DiBiase added a goal and an assist for DePaul (11-1) and Eric Klenofsky made six saves. Vince Han scored for Wayne Hills. Top seeded DePaul takes on Clifton (No. 2) in the final next weekend.

Passaic County Tournament Field Hockey Semifinals: Wayne HIlls 1, Wayne Valley 0

Delaney Burns scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Elizabeth Yorey as Wayne Hills defeated Wayne Valley, 1-0, in overtime in the semifinals of the Pasasic County Tournament in Wayne. Christina Fabiano made 15 saves in the shutout for Wayne Hills (11-2-2). Wayne Valley (10-5) out-shot Wayne Hills by five. Hills will take on top-seeded Lakeland in the final next week.

Football: DePaul 46, Old Tappan 0

Zach Bednarczyk scored three touchdowns and Joe Moreno added two more for DePaul (2-4) in its 46-0 victory over Old Tappan in Wayne. Moreno scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter and caught a five-yard pass from Bednarczyk in the second quarter.Bednarczyk ran for two scores in the second quarter, one from 24 yards out and the other from 27 yards out. Bednarczyk also threw a two point conversion to Matt Greff. Steve Speidel, Kareem Walker and Marky Clark also had touchdown rushes.

Bednarczyk led the way with 165 yards rushing and 100 yards passing. Moreno tacked on 161 yards rushing. 

Football: Pascack Valley 35, Wayne Hills 21

Justin DeGroat fired off a touchdown to Preston Quinn (9 yards) and two to Erik Moskal (10 and 19 yards). Erik Martinez was succesful on all three PAT attempts. Hills fell to 3-3. Unbeaten Pascack Valley was led by Kyle Schneider, who threw for 202 yards.

Football: Paramus 32, Wayne Valley 13

Luke Primerano ran for 135 yards, threw for 105 and had two touchdown rushes for Wayne Valley (4-2). Anthony Biondi had 5 catches for 61 yards. Elvis Romero had 7 tackles. Frank Law had 6 tackles, including a sack. John Rondi had 6 tackles as well.

Tyler Smith passed for two scores and ran for another for Paramus. Matt Tozzi also ran for two touchdowns.

Football: Greg Olsen’s son born, headed for heart surgery Saturday

T.J. Olsen, the son of former Wayne Hills star Greg Olsen and his wife, Kara, was delivered along with his twin sister by Caesarean section late Tuesday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C. Now comes the harder part for the Carolina Panthers tight end, his wife and the rest of their family. T.J. Olsen was born with a defective heart and will need three open-heart surgeries to survive. The first of those surgeries is scheduled for Saturday in Charlotte. Click here to read more

Kyle Keegan, Matt Cossari and Tyler Kulscar scored for Hills (No. 4, 7-1). Goalie Grant Kelly earned the shutout. Rodolfo Mercurio had 5 saves for Valley (No. 5, 4-3-2).

Passaic County Tournament Boys Soccer Quarterfinals: DePaul 2, Lakeland 1

Bryan Calixto and Jihoon Lee scored for top-seeded DePaul (9-1). Nicholas DelRio had an assist for the Spartans. Jason Rameriz scored for Lakeland.

Passaic County Tournament Field Hockey Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 3, Pompton Lakes 0

Christie Ludwig had two goals and Samantha Cummings to lead Wayne Valley (8-4). Goalie Alex Piekarz earned the shutout.

Passaic County Tournament Girls Soccer Quarterfinals: Clifton 3, DePaul 0

Tiffany Martinez had 9 saves for DePaul.

Football: Bergen Catholic 55, DePaul 19

Zach Bednarczyk threw touchdown passes to Matt Greff (7 yards) and Justin Nelson (39 yards), but DePaul still lost. Steve Speidel added a 53 yard touchdown rush. Bergen Catholic's male enrollement is double DePaul's male enrollement.

Football: Wayne Hills 28, Teaneck 6

Justin DeGroat threw for 203 yards and two touchdown passes (14 and 17 yards) to Matt Schunke to spark Wayne Hills (3-2) to a 28-6 victory over Teaneck yesterday in Wayne. Christian Rodriguez and Erik Martinez added touchdown runs of 6 and 2 yards, respectively. Rodriguez finished with 158 rushing yards. Erik Moskal caught 8 of DeGroat's passes for 139 yards. Martinez was true on all four PAT's. For Teaneck, Devaunte Locadia caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Bethea.

Football: Ramapo 45, Wayne Valley 13

Luke Primerano passed for 89 yards and ran for a 17 yard touchdown, but Wayne Valley (4-1) still lost its first game of the season. The other score came on a Billy Crank to Anthony Biondi 25 yard scoring strike. Biondi caught 3 passes for 70 yards. Dave Drozjock also had three receptions. Crank finished with 60 yards passing. Elvis Romero led the defense with 8 tackles, including three sacks. Justin Walker had 6 tackles, including 1 sack. Pavle Knezevic had 5 tackles, including 1 sack. Anthony Lovecchio threw a 15 yard touchdown to Neil O'Connor and a 72 yard touchdown to Logan Schulte. Lovecchio also ran for a touchdown. Ramapo registered 9 sacks.

Ramapo led 10-7 at the half, but exploded for five second half touchdowns. Ramapo has now outscored its five opponents, 204-47 this season. Wayne Valley hadn't allowed more than 17 points in any of its first four games. Valley's leading rusher and middle linebacker Anthony Landberg did not play due to a shoulder injury.

"This was absolutely huge," said Schulte. "We knew Wayne Valley was a great team. We studied them, practiced well and brought our A game."

Passaic County Tournament Girls Soccer Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 1, Passaic Valley 0

Victoria Pugliano scored on a pass from Keri Wieczerak to lead Wayne Valley (No. 2, 8-1). Halsey Luisa had 22 saves for Passaic Valley (No. 7, 6-3-1).
