In Wayne maelstrom, victims ignored

AS THE Wayne Hills High School football player saga winds down, we are left with the distinct impression that something is missing: concern for the plight of the two kids from Wayne Valley High School who were allegedly beaten up by eight Wayne Hills players.
Wayne Hills coach Chris Olsen should be highly concerned that eight of nine team members were allegedly involved in the fracas, rather than pointing to the one who was not. In fact, Olsen should have sat the players down after their arrests, told them their behavior was unacceptable and made them sit out the rest of the season. Instead, he fought to keep them playing every step of the way. What kind of example does that set?
This has been a grueling time for Wayne schools, but some good has come out of it. A new, universal conduct policy for sports and the realization by the school board that in the future, it must act swiftly. We wonder, though, about the victims and their families. They are the people in need of a public apology. Click here to read more

Seven Wayne Hills football players sentenced to probation

Seven Wayne Hills High School football players who were charged with aggravated assault in a criminal case that seized the township’s attention for weeks last fall each were sentenced to probation, a state courts official said. The seven players, all minors at the time of the alleged beating of two teenagers, were among nine Wayne Hills students at the center of a roaring controversy that divided residents and football fans, and moved school officials to force an iconic coach to choose between leading the team and a keeping a higher-paid administrative post. Boys Basketball: DePaul fights to the finish, but falls to Seton Hall Prep in North Non-Public A final, 67-59

Sadness was difficult to see. There was plenty of pride to go along with it.
True, DePaul was unhappy its season had just ended in Thursday’s North Non-Public A final against Seton Hall Prep at the Rutgers Athletic Center. With the loss, the career of longtime head coach Bart Fazio also came to a close. But the Spartans put in the kind of effort that put a smile on Fazio’s face, despite the 67-59 final. Section I, Group IV Semifinals: Passaic Tech 53, Wayne Valley 52
Jay Mustafa (19 points) led Wayne Valley (No. 6, 22-6) in its season ending loss to Passaic Tech (No. 7). Chris Homsi had 13 points. James Grevenitz was next with 10. Scott Arkin added 8 points. This was Valley's first 20-win season since 2008 and only the sixth in team history. The team's .846 winning percentage is the best at Wayne Valley since the 1987 team went 20-4.
Non Public, North A Boys Basketball Quarterfinals: DePaul 59, Union Catholic 52
Davon Jacobs led DePaul (No. 2) past Union Catholic (No. 7) with 19 points. Juwaun Carter and Kiy Hester added 10 points apiece. Josh Marquez and Sanders Green had 9 and 7 points respectively.

The Wayne Hills girls successfully defended their crown, but the girls' competition wasn't nearly as close. Wayne Hills, behind freshman Brooke Kowalski, sophomore Stephanie Bitcon and seniors Meryl Ryan and Talbot Weston, built a comfortable 19.50-second lead after the Giant Slalom on Tuesday before extending that advantage to 46.40 to earn its second straight title in a combined 13:23.15. Andrew Keane had 18 points and 8 rebounds to lead Wayne Valley (No. 6) to an upset win over Bloomfield (No. 3). Scott Arkin added 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
