Section I, Group III Boys Basketball Tournament First Round: Wayne Valley 58, Kennedy 57

Junior Andrew Keane canned a foul shot with no time left on the clock to boost Valley (No. 6) past Kennedy (No. 11). Keane was fouled hard under the basket as he attempted the game winner at the buzzer. He misfired on the first foul shot, but canned the second.

"I've coached over 700 high school games," said Valley coach Joe Leicht. "I've never coached a team that won a game with no time left on the clock. That's a first. Andrew is the kid that you want on the line in that situation. I knew he'd make one, although we all got a little nervous when he missed the first."

"I was trying to block everything out," Keane said. "But my first shot was way off. After that, maybe the pressure was off. I was just assuming we were going to overtime."

James Grevenitz led Wayne Valley with 16 points. Scott Arkin added 14. Keane finished with 11 points, while Chris Homsi had 10. Jay Mustafa had 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Keane had 9 boards.

Section I, Group III Boys Basketball, First Round: Garfield 54, Wayne Hills 49

With 1:36 remaining, Garfield enjoyed a 48-38 advantage. That was when Hills swingman Gezim Usini shot Wayne Hills back into it. Usini hit three three pointers in 49 seconds to cut the margin to 50-47 with 32 seconds to go. Garfield was able to fend off the Wayne’s comeback bid by canning key foul shots down the stretch.Usini finished with 16 points for Hills. Preston Quinn chipped in with 13 points. Garfield was led by 1,000 point scored Josh LeClerc, who netted 22 points.

Nikia Richardson had 11 points and Sierra McDuffie had 10 points to lead Passaic Tech to the title. Wayne Hills got 8 points from Sam Litsky.

Passaic County Boys Basketball Tournament Final: Eastside 61, DePaul 41

Juwuan Carter had 17 points and Josh Marquez had 16, but DePaul (No. 2) still lost to Eastside in the championship game of the Passaic County Tournament.

Passaic County Tournament Semifinals: DePaul 60, Hawthorne Christian 54

DePaul (No. 2) beat Hawthorne Christian to advance to the Passaic County final for the third time in the last eight years. They won it all in their two previous trips to the final (2003, 2007). They will take on top seeded Eastside in the final next Saturday at Wayne Valley (noon). Eastside beat Kennedy in the other semifinal game.

Jay Mustafa had 13 points and 5 assists, but Wayne Valley (15-5, No. 3) still suffered an upset lost to Hawthorne Christian (No. 6). Andrew Keane led Valley with 12 rebounds. Chris Homsi erupted for 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Wayne Valley. Jay Mustafa added 14 points and 5 assists. Scott Arkin and James Grevenitz chipped in with 10 points apiece. Andew Keane had a team high 11 rebounds.

Josh Marquez had 18 points, Davon Jacobs had 17 and Kiy Hester had 15 for DePaul

Boys Basketball: Wayne Valley 60, DePaul 58

Junior Andrew Keane canned two foul shots with 8 seconds left to lead Wayne Valley to an upset win over DePaul. Keane finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 6 charges drawn. James Grevenitz added 14 points. Jay Mustafa had 13 points and 7 assists. Chris Homsi had 11 points and 6 assists. Scott Arkin had 6 boards and 4 assists.

"This is as big of a regular season win as we've had here at Wayne Valley since I've been here," said Valley coach Joe Leicht, who took over at Wayne Valley in 2003. "I have no idea when Wayne Valley beat DePaul last. It's been a long time."

Valley, in all likelihood, has not beaten DePaul since the early 1990's. But that's a bit misleading. They've only been playing each other annually for the last three years, since the NJSIAA realigned North Jersey conferences. Prior to that, Valley and DePaul would square off only occasionally. For a five years stretch in the late 80s and early 90s, both teams would annually play each other in the All Wayne Christmas Tournament. Valley beat DePaul in a few of those tournaments, but not since.

Josh Marquez led DePaul with 15 points. Kiy Hester was next with 12 points. Mason Aronson and Davon Jacobs added 9 and 8 points respectively.

Both Valley and DePaul are 14-4 this year.

Andrew Keane doesn’t consider himself a good foul shooter. Wayne Valley’s junior center entered the Indians’ game at DePaul on Tuesday night shooting just 62 percent from the line, but that didn’t stop him from making the two most significant foul shots of his varsity career. Keane sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to snap a tie, and five seconds later rebounded DePaul’s missed layup attempt to secure Wayne Valley’s 60-58 road win. Wayne Valley 66, Eastern Christian 40: Jay Mustafa had 12 points, 10 assists, 10 steals and 6 rebounds to lead Valley (No. 3, 13-4). Chris Homsi led the team in scoring with 16 points and also had 5 rebounds. James Grevenitz had 11 points, 6 assists and 6 boards. Scott Arkin chipped in with 9 points.

DePaul 74, Pompton Lakes 37: Davon Jacobs and Kiy Hester had 15 points apiece for DePaul (No. 2, 14-3). Josh Marquez added 13 points. Larry Gelock and Gianpoalo Marchese had 12 and 11 points for Pompton.

West Milford 52, Wayne Hills 39: Sophomore Scott Wills had 9 points foor Hills (No. 10).
