Football: Pompton Lakes 15, Butler 7
Pompton Lakes vs. Butler, the biggest football rivalry in the state from 1933 to 1980, was renewed Wednesday night. Pompton won, 15-7. When the series ended in 1980, Butler was on a 11 game win streak, making this Pompton's first win over Butler since 1968.
Scott Mahoney, Pompton's head coach, played for Pompton Lakes in the late 1980's. His father was a longtime assistant coach at Pompton.
"The series ended by the time I was in high school," Mahoney said. "But I grew up watching these games. They were always good games, but Butler always seemed to come out on top. In all my years involved with Pompton Lakes football, I never kept a game ball and put it in my house. That's just not my thing. But I'm keeping this one. It's that special."

Honest, we didn’t want to pile on Chris Olsen, a fine high school coach despite his reputation for being a classless winner and a lousy loser, which — luckily for the adoring townspeople of Wayne, who bow to his domineering countenance — is a side he doesn’t have to show very often.
That was the case again tonight, when Wayne Hills posted a 48-21 rout of Paramus in a state semifinal. To call this a fervent spectacle would be a gross overstatement. The stands were only two-thirds full, an odd thing that one fan who wouldn’t reveal his identity (Click here to read more)

The News 12 crew that did arrive was greeted rudely by what they recognized as “members of the coaching staff”. Fans on campus later pelted our News 12 van with eggs and rocks (apparently taking a cue from the yo-yo’s at Penn State earlier in the week). Football: Non Public Group III Playoffs: Immaculata 38, DePaul 28
Antonio Natale threw for 186 yards and four touchdowns, including two to spark a 17-point fourth quarter that lifted Immaculata to a 38-28 victory over DePaul in the first round of the NJSIAA/Sports Concussion Center of New Jersey Non-Public, Group 3 playoffs last night in Somerville.After Joe Moreno scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards in the first-quarter for DePaul, the Natale aerial show began in the second quarter. First he connected with Chandler Vanderbeek on a 60-yard scoring play. Then Jake Eisenstodt returned a fumble 36 yards to send the teams to the locker room tied at 14-14.
Natale and Vanderbeek hooked up for a 37-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Natale connected for scoring passes of 17 yards to Shayne Jones and 18 yards to Trevor Socarras. Matthew Kassenbaum kicked a 27-yard field goal to conclude the Immaculata scoring. Vanderbeek finished with 116 yards receiving and Kellen Sperduto rushed for 114 yards on 24 carries for Immaculata.

Football: St. Joseph's Montvale 34, Wayne Hills 10
Spencer Aukamp connected with junior wideout Ricky Jeune for a 52-yard touchdown pass on a fly pattern down the left sideline just 2:06 into the game to give St. Joes an early 7-0 lead. The speedy and sure handed Jeune beat two Wayne Hills (8-1) defenders on the play. The three-play drive was set up by Christian Stapleton’s interception of a Kevin Olsen pass. Wayne Hills immediately shaved the St. Joseph lead to 7-3 with an impressive 66-yard drive that concluded with a 34-yard field goal by Erik Martinez.From that point on it was all St. Joes. Aukamp threw for 219 yards, threw for three score and ran for another. Jeune caught 6 of those passes for 130 yards.
Hills drove four times into Joes terrytory, but could not convert. Mike Guarino had a key pick and Justin Beveridge recovered a muffed punt, but neither led to points. Hills drove late in the first half, but time expired when a Andrew Monaghan got tackled on the five yard line off a screen pass from Kevin Olsen. Hills couldn't get another play off. Hills' touchdown came on a 55 yard Christian Rodriguez run.
"We had the ball inside the red zone four times and only scored three points," said coach Chris Olsen. "I think St. Joes is a really good football team. But I put a lot of this on us. Some of the mistakes we made were mind boggling."
Hills (8-1) is still expected to earn the top seed in the Section I, Group III playoffs.
"We have a chance to win our 8th state championship," Olsen said. "We haven't been playing well the last couple weeks. But we were 8-0."
Football: DePaul 55, Demarest 40
Joe Moreno scored on runs of 1, 5 and 3 and rushed for 103 yards to lead DePaul (8-1). Zach Bednarczyk threw an 81 yard touchdown pass to Massimo Aronson and also ran for a 15 yard touchdown. Davon Jacobs scored on a 26 yard run and on an 84 yard kickoff return. Khaliem Hester scored on a 30 yard fumble return.
