Baseball: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Tenafly 3, Wayne Hills 2
Senior lefty Nick Hroncich scattered seven hits, striking out 12 and walking three, for Tenafly (16-9) in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 quarterfinals in Wayne. Marco Baratta hit an RBI single, another run scored on a throwing error and Tyler Durr had a sacrifice fly in Tenafly's three-run fifth inning. Troy Zaffino knocked in a run for Wayne Hills (18-8).

Non Public A First Round: DePaul 13, Union Catholic 4
Sean Jones had three hits and four RBI, John Scarr added four hits and three RBI and Mike Lembo drove in two runs for DePaul (12-10) in a North Jersey, Non-Public A first round game in Scotch Plains. Matt Nowicki drove in two runs for Union Catholic (19-6).
Softball: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Indian Hills 5, Wayne Hills 0
In Oakland, freshman shortstop Nicole Leocata singled in two runs to key a four-run fifth inning and junior right-hander Ashley DeYoung tossed a four-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks for Indian Hills (24-4) in a North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 quarterfinal. Jamie Pospishil singled twice in three at-bats for Wayne Hills (20-5).

Softball: Section I, Group III Playoffs: Wayne Hills 5, Old Tappan 4
Old Tappan had a 4-1 lead in the third inning, but Hills stormed back to take the lead by the end of the fourth. Erica Wills picked up her 20th win of the year. Kelly Burian, Meghan McVeigh, Jamie Pospishil and Julia Slater knocked in runs for Hills.

Ashlee Gieger pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and Stephanie Romano hit a two-run single in a three-run first to lead West Milford (22-2), during the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in West Milford. Niki Carillo doubled in Valley's run.

Troy Zaffino threw a four-hitter, striking out seven. As the lead off batter, he delivered a single and an RBI as Wayne Hills defeated Northern Highlands in the first round of the Section 1, Group 3 Tournament in Wayne. Chris Amato came through with a double, an RBI and two runs and Brian Dowling hit a single and scored twice for Wayne Hills (18-6). Billy Taylor, Zack Ross-Nash, Steve DiBella and Brandon Ulloa each had a single for Northern Highlands (13-12)

Brian Dowling did many memorable things during the football season while leading Wayne Hills to a North 1, Group
3 championship and earning a scholarship from the University of Massachusetts. He happily plays a supporting role for the Patriots during baseball season.
"I’m just a role player," Dowling said, "just trying to do my thing."

Some of his teammates might’ve felt uneasy, but Sean Jones wasn’t worried when DePaul squandered a 9-0 lead Saturday.
The Spartans junior right fielder promptly made sure Hawthorne’s comeback fell short in the first round of the Passaic County baseball tournament. The Bears scored seven times to tie the score, 9-9, in the bottom of the fifth, but Jones hit an RBI single in the sixth and blasted an inside-the-park grand slam in the seventh to propel DePaul to a 15-11 win. Junior right-hander Troy Zaffino hurled a four-hitter and struck out 11 to help the Patriots fend off the Falcons. Wayne Hills will face Lakeland in the quarterfinals. Tyler Rubino hit two singles and had an RBI and Steve Addesso added a one-run single for Wayne Hills. Manchester Regional (1-16) was seeded 15th. Wayne Hills will play as the host to Lakeland in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Donnie Cusick hit a two-run single and Mike Tolerico singled in a run when Wayne Valley (12-5) sent up 13 batters, collected nine hits and scored nine runs in the seventh inning in West Milford. Brady Pevny led West Milford (9-9) with three doubles.

Chris Amato, a junior second baseman, hit a two-out, walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Justin Ferrarella for Wayne Hills (14-5) at Wayne Hills High. Andrew Monaghan hit a double, a single and delivered two RBI. Amato chipped in with another double, a single and an RBI. Brian Dowling hit a triple and had two RBI for Wayne Hills. Eric Fernandez collected a homer, two singles and three RBI for Lakeland (9-8).

Mike Tolerico singled in Brian Kokos with the tying run and Nick Hoy singled to score K.C. Abel with the winning run in the eighth inning for Wayne Valley (9-3) at Wayne Valley. Sean Jones led DePaul with four RBI. Gerard DeFilippo and Ryan Carroll had two RBI apiece. Hoy batted in four runs for Valley. Mike Cornell knocked in three. Kokos, Abel, and Tolerico had two RBI apiece. DePaul is 5-8. The teams combined for 36 hits and 27 runs.

DEPAUL 20, MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS 1 (at Wayne): Victoria D’Addario drove in three runs with a homer and a triple, and Christina Martinez and Ashley LaGuardia also drove in three as the second-seeded Spartans scored 16 runs in the first inning and cruised into the quarterfinals with their ninth win of the season.
