Valley’s winning ways were finally halted Saturday, when they fell to Hawthorne, 7-6. Hawthorn’s Ryan Hollis singled in Ryan O'Hea in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Bears. O'Hea had drawn one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on Kevin Smith's single and scored on a hit by Hollis. Justin Avedissian delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the 11th to give Hills the victory. Steve Addesso and Justin Ferrarella also had 2 RBI apiece. Next, Hills (3-2) topped Clifton, 6-0. Troy Zaffino hurled a five-hit shutout.

“Troy is down in the zone, he’s focused and he’s a kid that got experience last year as a sophomore against varsity competition,” said Hills coach Fran Rella. “He knows how to control the pace of the game. When things start to get a little hairy, he steps off the mound and calms himself down.”

Clifton came close to scoring in when catcher Adnan Pjetrovic doubled to the left field fence. Junior Chris Amato’s throw from short-left helped preserve the shutout as his throw to the plate mowed down Clifton’s Jimmy Lavin.

Hills scored three runs in the third, on RBI singles by Amato and Zaffino. Junior first basemen Jason Avedissian, who went 2-for-3, added an RBI single in the fourth.

“We’ve had opportunity to win every single one of our games,” Rella said. “We made mistake that came to bite us in those two losses. We still have some work to do. Our league is tough. We’re not satisfied. But we’re happy with where we are right now.”

DePaul meanwhile slipped to 2-2 with two losses this past week. First, they bowed to West Milford, 5-2. Michael Sweeney homered for DePaul. Nicholas Fondaccaro also had an RBI. Sean Carroll tripled and Sean Jones doubled.
