Chris Amato knocked in two runs as Hills (6-2) started the week by edging Passaic Valley, 6-5. Troy Zaffino, Justin Avidissian and Steve Adesso knocked in one run apiece.
Amato earned the win, striking out three. Anthony Scudillo relieved Amato with two outs in the sixth and runners on second and third. He ended the threat by getting the next batter to fly out. He then fanned the three batters he faced in the seventh inning.
Tom Gaccione led PV with four RBI. Drew Sous also knocked in a run. Gaccione, Sous, Anthony Martinez and Ian Hanley registered two hits apiece.
Next, Wayne Hills clobbered crosstown Passaic Tech, 17-2. Andrew Monahan and Joe Rapp knocked in three runs apiece. Twin brothers Jason and Justin Avidissian both had two hits and two RBI. Amato and Zaffino had two RBI apiece. Tyler Rubino also batted in a run.
Adesso earned the win, allowing just three hits over five innings. David Guererro had an RBI for Tech.
Wayne Hills capped its week by downing defending Section I, Group III champion Lakeland, 6-1.
Jason Avidissian stroked a two-run single to left to give Hills a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. He added an opposite field RBI single in the seventh. Adesso added a two run single in the seventh inning. Rubino also batted in a run.
Zaffino earned the win, striking out seven. The junior has allowed just one earned run in 20 innings of work. The lone run came when Lakeland’s Steve Secor had an infield in single in the fourth inning.
“It was a slower roller and it was a close play at first,” Rella said. “If that’s how they’re going to score runs on Troy, I’m fine with that.”
“No one had us ranked very high in the preseason,” Jason Avidissian said. “That was based on last year. We’re a better team than last year. Lakeland is a good program. We always have tough battles with them. This was a pretty big win. We’re 6-2 and we could easily be 8-0.”
