Valley’s latest victims were crosstown DePaul, Paterson Eastside and Clifton.
They began the week by toppling DePaul, 10-0. Brian Kokos was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Right-hander Andrew Furber threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Wayne Valley.
Donnie Cusick helped Valley’s cause with two RBI. Furber, Nick Hoy, and Mike Tolerico knocked in one run apiece.
Furber now has 17 strikeouts in 12 innings of work. He hasn’t given up a run this season and allowed three batters to reach base. DePaul slugger Matt Betz has the only hit off Furber this season.
“Furber always brings his best stuff,” Kokos said. “In my opinion, he’s almost unhittable.”
Next, Valley leveled Eastside, 11-0. Cusick and Kokos combined for 10 strikeouts. Tolerico and Kokos each hit two-run homeruns.
Cusick knocked in two runs. K.C. Abel, Mike Cornell, Joe Duncan, Hoy, and Josh Marks knocked in one run apiece.
Next, Valley downed Clifton, 3-1. Hoy had two RBI and Tolerico had one. Anthony Verrilli doubled.
“We went 4-7 last April and ended up winning the Passaic Coutny Championship,” Furber said. “Right now we’re 5-1 so we’re way ahead of schedule.”
“We were down about losing that one game (to Hawthorne last week),” Kokos said. “A lot of people were saying we would go 29-0. I guess that’s pretty hard to do.”
