WAYNE BOWL III: It's Valley vs. Hills In the Final!
11/17/07, By Skiffo Drake: For just the third time ever, Wayne Valley will play Wayne Hills in football. The two schools won semi-final games to advance to the Section I, Group III championship (Friday, Meadowlands, 8pm). Valley (No. 2) advanced by beating Paramus (No. 3), 20-7. Hills (No. 1) advanced by beating Old Tappan (No. 4), 23-6. Hills will be going for it's fifth championship in six years. They will also be playing for their 40th win in a row. Valley will be going for its eighth championship ever, but its first since 1991. Both teams are undefeated this year (11-0).

Ole Wayne High split into Valley and Hills in 1966. The teams were placed in different conferences purposely. The town wanted to avoid "creating a rivalry that was detrimental to the positive spirit of the town." Since they're in different conferences, they can only play in the playoffs. It's only happened twice. Valley beat Hills in the Section I, Group III 1991 final, 7-0. Hills beat Valley in the Section I, Group III semi-finals, 41-6. Both teams held serve, winning on their home field.

“I don’t even know who’s winning the (Hills-Old Tappan game),” Valley coach Brian O’Connor said. “I really don’t care who we play. They’re both great teams.”

Dortch’s opinion differed slightly, “This is amazing,” he said. “It (Valley-Hills) is the biggest rivaly in New Jersey. We’re going to just go play like we’ve always been playing. Hopefully, we’ll get the win.”

“We always expect to go to the State Championship game and win,” Hills quarterback Mike Giampapa said. “It’s cool that it’s going to be Wayne Valley.”

“It’s going to be a battle,” predicted Hills tailback Dan DeCicco. “It’s going to be fun. There’s going to be a lot of back and forth until we play the game.”

Valley got two touchdown rushes from Matt Dortch (40 & 6 yards) in the win over Paramus (7-3). Tom Papa caught a 23 yard TD from Derrick Bligh. Dortch added a fumble recovery, an interception and a key 30-yard reception to the cause. Ryan Durr had a 40-yard rush that led to the Papa touchdown.

Hills got rushing touchdowns from Dan DeCicco (1 yard) and Carlton Marcin (6 yards) in the win over Old Tappan (8-2). Tim Divers drilled three field goals and two extra points. Giampapa had 22 completions for 204 yards. Jeremiah Kayal had nine catches for 65 yards and broke the school record of eight interceptions. Marcin had 65 rushing yards and three catches for 48 yards. He also had seven tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

11/2/07: Wayne Hills 64, Indian Hills 20: Jeremiah Kayal scored four touchdowns to lead Hills (9-0). He pulled in 56 and 16 yard passes from Mike Giampapa. He also scored on 65 yard interception return. Giampapa also threw two touchdowns to Bryan Ogden (54 and 13 yards). Giampapa, Ogden and Kayal also combined for a 73 yard hook-and-ladder. GIampapa threw 22 yards to Ogden, who caught the ball and flipped it to Kayal. Dan DeCicco scored on a 57 yard rush and a 40 yard interception return. Mark Kirk rushed for a four yard score. Tim Divers drilled seven extra points and a 33-yard field goal. For more photos, click here.

10/27/07: Wayne Hills 35, Fair Lawn 0: Jeremiah Kayal hauled in two 26-yard touchdown strikes from Mike Giampapa. Danny DeCicco caught a 24 yard touchdown pass from Giampapa. 10/20/07:Thirty-five and counting; Hills Beats Demarest, By Rich Stamboulian: The Patriots rode strong rushing performances by senior tailbacks Dan DeCicco and Carlton Marcin to a 42-7 rout of Demarest. The victory was Hills’ 35th straight and ran this season’s mark to a perfect (7-0).

De Cicco (15 carries for 149 yards, two TDs) carried on five straight plays on the second Hills’ possession ending with a one yard plunge to open the scoring late in the opening quarter. His 33 yard dash on the quarter’s second play ended a six play, 72 yard drive to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead.

Marcin (11 carries, 115 yards) joined the scoring parade when he powered through two Norseman defenders and into the end zone from nine yards out with 4:25 left in the first half. Joe Volpe scored the Patriots’ final TD of the opening half when he turned an out route into a 28 yard score. The senior shook off a tackle on the sideline, then sped to the end zone juking his way past two Norsemen along the way.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Kayal (four catches, 109 yards) teamed up with quarterback Mike Giampapa on the fifth play of the second half for a 65 yard catch and run to extend the margin to 35-0. The senior signal-caller finished with nine completions in 18 attempts for a season-high 192 yards and 2 TDs. Demarest scored their only points when junior fullback Tyler Potterton broke through the Hills’ defense to score from 18 yards out midway through the third quarter.

Marcin closed out the scoring early in the final quarter with a 12 yard scoring run that capped an eight play, 67 yard drive. Sophomore Tim Divers converted on his sixth PAT of the night for the 42-7 final margin.

Head Coach Chris Olsen was pleased with the offensive effort. “I thought we played hard. We were able to run when we wanted to and pass when we wanted to.”

He found room for improvement however. “We made some mistakes which we can’t have. Olsen cited “two fumbles and a couple of missed assignments including the one where they busted through for a touchdown” as errors his team will need to correct before the playoffs begin in three weeks.

Next up for the Patriots is next Saturday afternoon’s visit to Fair Lawn (1-4) in their final road game.

10/12/07: Wayne Hills 27, Pascack Valley: 0: Dan DeCicco and Carlton Marcin rushed for two touchdowns apiece as Wayne (6-0) romped. DeCicco scored on the second play of the game when he ran in from 67 yards out. The Patriots have now outscored opponents 218-14 this year. The team's win streak now stands at 34. DeCicco finished with 219 rushing yards.

"The big picture is that we're 6-0," coach Chris Olsen said. "We just went through the meat of our schedule. The playoffs are in a few weeks. We have to figure out what we're doing wrong and get ourselves in position for that."

Olsen was vexed by three Hills turnovers.

"They (PV) had a great defense," DeCicco said. "They held us to 27 points. Not many teams can say that."

10/5/07: Wayne Hills 24, Old Tappan 7 (Old Tappan), By Skiffo Drake: Tim Divers gave Wayne Hills (5-0) a 3-0 lead when he booted a 36-yard field goal in the first period. Hills extended the lead in the second period when Mike Giampapa hit Jeremiah Kayal with a 13-yard touchdown bullet. Old Tappan (4-1) cut it to 10-7 with a 52-yard touchdown bomb from Kyle Jansen to Jordan Scaduto shortly before the half.

Hills pulled away in the fourth period with two touchdowns. Early in the fourth, Old Tappan had been driving for the would-be go-ahead score. Carlton Marcin picked off a pass to shift the tide toward the Patriots. A sustained drive was capped off by a Mike Giampapa quarterback sneak touchdown. Danny DeCicco sealed the game with a 39 yard touchodwn sprint.

Old Tappan's Jamie Rowe came in averaging 11 yards per carry. Hills shut him down completely, holding his to 55 yards on 17 carries. DeCicco and Marcin combined for 170 rushing yards. Giampapa threw for 77 yards. Divers connected on three point-after tries.

Wayne's win streak now stands at 33 games.

"You look at that scored board and might think it was easy," DeCicco said. "But there were points in the second half where it could have gone either way. The nerves were high."

"I was scared to death of them," Hills coach Chris Olsen confessed. "They're very phsical and their back is a good player. But we're pretty good too. We both have a chance to make noise in the playoffs."

And maybe face each other again. To see more photos from this game, click here.

9/28/07: Wayne Hills 14, Mahwah: 0 (Mahwah): Hills (4-0) scored its first touchdown in the second quarter when Mike Giampapa threw 37 yards to Bryan Ogden. Mahwah nearly tied it in the third period when they drove 69 yards to the Wayne Hills one-yard line. Hills dodged a bullet when Mahwah fumbled near the goal line. Salerno jarred the ball from the quarterback, who was pitching the ball to the back. Ronnie Driesse recovered the ball in the back field. Wayne sealed the verdict when Giampapa threw 27-yards to Kyle Hanenberg with four minutes left in the game. Mark Romeo kicked two extra points. Wayne Hills now has 32 straight wins.

"We'll have to play 200-times better next week if we want to beat Old Tappan," Hills coach Chris Olsen said. "I have to give the Mahwah kids credit. They played hard. We're not going to win every game, 50-0."

9/20/07: Wayne Hills 41, Ramapo 7 (Wayne), By Skiffo Drake: The Wayne Hills-Ramapo rivalry is one of the most storied rivalries in the state. It's noted for last second finishes and epic NBIL and State Sectional Championship games. Not anymore. For now, Wayne Hills has turned the rivalry into a laugher. They mercilessly pounded Ramapo (0-3), 41-7. It is Wayne's most lopsided win over Ramapo ever.

Dan DeCicco scored five touchdowns to lead Hills. The senior got Hills (3-0) off to a strong start with a 69-yard punt return to the one-yard line in the first quarter. He followed with a one-yard touchdown burst. He also scored on rushes of 6, 45, 3 and 36. He finished with 202 ground yards.

"Every game, he's probably the strongest kid on the field. And the fastest," Patriots coach Chris Olsen said of DeCicco. "It starts with that. And then his mental toughness is second to none. But every field we step on he is probably the strongest player. Not the strongest back, but he may be the strongest player."

Carlton Marcin scored for Hills on a 36-yard punt return. The Green Raiders avoided the shutout when late in the fourth period when Steve Harvey caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Weiss. It was the first scores surrendered by Hills this season.

Wayne Hills now has a 31-game winning streak. It dates back to 2004 regular season loss to Ramapo. For a history of the Wayne Hills-Ramapo rivalry, click here. For more photos, click here.
