11/11/07: Non Public Quarterfinals, Immaculata 35, DePaul 25 (Somerset County): After a dreadful 1-4 start, injury-marred DePaul recovered to make the playoffs. The reward was a game with Immaculata, an undefeated powerhouse from central New Jersey.

As expected, DePaul (No. 7, 4-5) lost. But they put a scare into their powerful foe before losing, 35-25. Immaculata (No. 2, 10-0) had clobbered all previous opponents, 285-48.

DePaul moved 94 yards on its first possession and scored when James Jurewicz ran in from a yard out. DePaul led 17-0 at halftime after Tyler Keraitis provided 35-yard field goal boot and Nick Sengotta caught an 8 yard TD throw from Dan Farley.

Immaculata scored four second half touchdowns to pull out the win. DePaul added to its total in the fourth period when Farley hit Holvach with an 18 yard strike.

10/26/07: DePaul 26, Butler 16 (Wayne): DePaul (4-4) clinched a playoff bid by besting Butler. Shawn Murray returned the opening kickoff for an 86 yard touchdown. James Jurewicz scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards. William Bock scored on a 24 yard rush for Butler. Andrew Turzilli added a 65 yard scoring rush.
The game presented fans with a rarity of sorts. It was supposed to be played at Butler. However, heavy rains turned Hempstead Field into a quagmire. The game was moved to DePaul, which has a turf field. The Spartans were the "away" team and thus wore the white "away" jerseys.

10/20/07: DePaul 39, Madison 21: James Jurewicz bounced back from the shoulder injury he suffered last week rush for 144 yards and score three touchdowns (1, 8 and 14 yards). All six DePaul touchdowns came on the ground. In addition to Jurewicz, Nick Sengotta (21 yards), Dan Farley (1 yard) and Dennis Silversey (30 yards) scored. Victor Trentacost had more than 10 tackels for DePaul.

DePaul, which started 1-3, will make the playoffs if they beat Butler (1-6) next week.

"We're playing much better now," coach John McKenna said. "We're finally healthy."

10/12/07: DePaul 28, Pequannock 0: James Jurewicz and Nick Palmieri rushed for two touchdowns apiece to lead DePaul. Jurewicz, the team's leading rusher, left the game late in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. It was tough news for the already-injury plagued Spartans.

"We're not sure how severe it is," coach John McKenna said. "We're a little snake-bit this year. We were just starting to get healthy. Hopefully, we'll hear soon."

"He's our main running back," Palmieri said. "When he went down, I knew I had to run hard."

Jurewicz scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards and finished with 103 yards in just two quarters of work. Palmieri scored on runs of 6 and 10 yards and rushed for 84 yards. Tyler Keraitis kicked all four extra points. DePaul (2-4) needs to win its next two games on the road (Madison and Butler) to qualify for the playoffs.

The Spartans don't seem to think it will be a problem. "We're going to win the state championship," captain Victor Trentacost said. "Without a doubt."

"We're playoff-minded," leading receiver Shaun Murray said. "It's good to get this win and get back on track." For more pictures, click here.

10/5/07: Caldwell 13, DePaul 0

9/28/07: Montville 28, DePaul 13: DePaul (1-3) was rocked by costly turnovers. Montville raced to a 14-0 lead on on Alex Martello 2 yard rush and on a Anthony Chierici 2 pass from Vinny Lizza. Montville tackle Phil Benevenga recovered a fumble and returned it 53 yards with 1:11 left in the half to help make it 21-0.

DePaul stormed back in the second half. Sophomore Dan Farley scored on a quarterback sneak. He then fired a touchdown to Shaun Murray, who made a nifty, juggling catch in the end zone. Twice in the fourth quarter, DePaul appeared to be driving for a potential tying score. Both surges ended with Farley throwing interceptions. The latter, Chierici returned for a 20 yard touchdown. 9/21/07: Lakeland 34, DePaul 14 (Wayne): DePaul (1-2) started things off with a 20-play, 83-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run by Nick Palmieri. The lead was short lived. Lakeland scored on its next touch when Greg Bardzell rushed for 50 yard TD. A DePaul fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to a Ray Capo one-yard touchdown burst. Barzdell recovered the ball, which was knocked loose by Jake McDonald. The Lancers, who missed both extra point attempts, took a 12-7 lead into intermission.

The second half was all Lakeland. They started things off with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that was aided by a 15-yard taunting penalty against DePaul. Lou Montegari capped it off with a two yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown. Montegari then threw a four yard touchdown toss to Danny Deighan. The onslaught was capped off with a 68 yard touchdown run by Barzdell.

DePaul scored in the second half when sophomore Dan Farley threw a pass that was deflected and caught for 36 yard score by Tim Bishop. Farley was in for senior quarterback Dennis Silversey, who left the game after DePaul's first play with what was later diagnosed as a separated left (non-throwing) shoulder. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Paterson and DePaul head coach John McKenna said he was uncertain how long Silversey would be out.

McKenna scoffed at the notion that the injury took the wind out of DePaul's sails. "If you give me enough time, I could make up 100 excuses. None of them would be true. We lost for one reason - we got our butts kicked all over the field."

Barzdell rushed for 131 yards. Montegari threw for 89 yards. Kyle Fuchs had a sack and a fumble recovery for Lakeland. Kyle Lindenhaler and Steve Clearwater had eight and seven tackles respectively.

After throwing an interception to Lakeland's Tyler Engels on DePaul's first possession, Farley threw for 161 yards. DePaul was topped by James Jurewicz’ 61 yards on 15 carries and Shaun Murray’s 6 catches for 68 yards. Thaddeus Kowal had 10 tackles and Bishop and William Edie each made 8 stops. 9/15/07: Delbarton 13, DePaul 12 (Morris): Delbarton snuck away with the win when Mike Bell hit a field goal in the 4th quarter. DePaul's touchdown came when Shawn Murray caught a 25 yard pass from Denny Silversey. Tyler Keraitis made two field goals for DePaul (1-1).

9/7/07: DePaul 33, Orange 14 (Wayne): Shakim Phillips caught touchdown passes of 17 and 11 from Denny Silversey as DePaul won its opener. Silversey also rushed for a four yard score. Nick Palmieri and Shaun Murray added rushing scores for the Spartans. Orange, which was held to less than 10 yards total offense, did manage to score on its first series when Wayne Fortan rushed in from five yards out. Fortan later scored on an 88-yard punt return.
