O’Connor has had some great days at
Valley. He’s beaten Wayne Hills, been in the sectional final, but the last few
years haven’t been so great. The Indians were 4-6 in 2013. 4-6 in 2012 and 3-7
in 2011. A lot of coaches get let go for those kind of marks. What his friends
and backers will tell you is there is more to HS football than winning games.
They’re right. O’Connor has done a lot of great things for that program and the
community. He started the school’s football Hall of Fame, which is a great gesture
and way to connect the past with the present. He’s made a serious impact on
kids lives, far too many to count. He told me a story privately about basically
rescuing a kid on the verge of suicide. And I would tell you I haven’t talked
to anybody who thinks O’Connor is a bad coach or a bad person.
