Football: Wayne Valley welcomes U.S. Marine Corps

As the Wayne Valley football team prepares for the 2013 season, head coach Brian O'Connor is preaching pride, discipline, persistence and commitment.

"There's no question in my mind that we have the talent to compete for Conference and State Sectional championships," said O'Connor, now entering his 12th year on Valley Road. "To do that, we have to instill qualities in our players that will help them face challenges on and off the field."

With that in mind, O'Connor invited the United States Marine Corps to Wayne Valley last Friday to conduct a leadership seminar.

Boys' Basketball: Wayne's Corsetto named head coach at North Arlington

Self-described "basketball lifer" Rich Corsetto retired from coaching basketball in 2010 after 38 years on the sideline. His retirement merely lasted three short years. A week ago, the Wayne resident was named the boys' basketball coach at North Arlington High School.

Preparing to win a state championship in any sport comes with a load of sacrifices. At Wayne Hills, the football team has enjoyed its share of successes over the past decade, winning eight state titles with a group of highly competitive and hard-working athletes who devoted a great deal of their 'free' time to becoming better players.

Little League Baseball: Wayne Nationals drop State Tournament opener to Toms River East

The Wayne Nationals Little League baseball team had Toms River East on the ropes. Holding what seemed like a comfortable, 4-2 lead with one out in the top-half of the sixth and decisive inning in tonight's opening round of the Joe Graziano State Tournament Final in Wallington, Wayne was within two outs from advancing to tomorrow's second round and their goal of reaching the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament appeared within grasp.

Baseball is a sport filled with “unbreakable” records. There is, for example, Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hit streak and Ted Williams’ .406 single season batting average. Wayne has its own version. It has been widely assumed that Wayne Little League’s 1970 Little League World Series Championship will never be duplicated by another township team. But for the first time in 43 years, Wayne's chances of reaching Williamsport and perhaps win another world championship just got a little bit more plausible.

Little League Baseball: A look at Wayne Nationals and all four state finalists

Only four New Jersey-based Little League teams are still alive with one week remaining in July. The Wayne Nationals, Toms River East, Nutley East and East Greenwich all won their respective Sectional State Tournaments last week and advanced to tonight's Joe Graziano State Tournament hosted by the Wallington Little League. By the end of this weekend, one team will be crowned New Jersey State champions and will represent the Garden State at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament next week in Bristol, Connecticut.

The Little League World Series, after all, is a global baseball tournament for children aged 11 and 12 years old. Named for the World Series in Major League baseball, it was first played in 1947 and culminates every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Little League Baseball charters more than 7,000 leagues. Nearly 6,000 of them are in the United States. There are 2.5 million Little League players worldwide. The global field is divided into 16 geographic regions (8 national and 8 international).
