The response was both timely and powerfully effective. Wayne Hills had been challenged and the Patriots answered the only way they know how – putting on intense offensive pressure.

Taking advantage of a late first-half goal after denying a point-blank Northern Highlands attempt, the Patriots defeated the Highlanders, 1-0, in a North 1, Group 3 state field hockey tournament semifinal Friday. Second-seeded Wayne Hills moves on to the sectional final next week.

"This is a very special group of girls, we've really bonded and come together at exactly the right time of the season," said Wayne Hills senior co-captain Elizabeth Yorey.
