Baseball: Wayne Valley coach apologetic in 'defeat'

The Wayne Valley baseball team's quest for a fifth Passaic County Tournament semifinal appearance in the last six years came to a grinding and heartbreaking halt Saturday when they lost to ninth-seeded Clifton in the opening round.


It was, however, far from your typical loss.

Wayne Valley (12-9), the eighth seed, walked off the field seemingly triumphant with what appeared to be a 3-2 victory. But two days later, though, Clifton was declared the winner.

Wayne Valley, it turned out, inadvertently violated one of the NJSIAA's rules for innings limits Saturday, when standout pitcher Brian Kokos exceeded 10 innings within in a four-day period. Mathematically, the senior right-hander had thrown 16 pitches too many. Click here to read more
