Wayne Valley advances to play fourth-seeded Paterson Kennedy, a 47-42 winner over DePaul, in the Passaic County Tournament semifinals at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, at Paterson Kennedy. It marks the fourth time in the last five seasons that Wayne Valley has made it to the semis.

Wayne Valley's game plan was to pass the ball around for as long as it took to get inside shots and it worked to perfection. In fact, of Wayne Valley's 17 field goals, 15 were layups and two were followups.

``We used the two minute drill on offense,'' said senior forward Andrew Herasimtschuk, who collected a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. ``We set back screens and layups. No jump shots. Passaic Tech has a great team and we were out-matched in speed so, we played at our tempo and went for the good shot. This was a big win.''

On defense, against Wayne Valley's 1-3-1 zone, Passaic Tech was ice cold. In the first period, it hit on just 2 of 16 field goal attempts but still the score was tied, 6-6. For the game, out of 14 shots it made from the field, it connected on just one perimeter shot, a 3-pointer. With Tech missing, forwards Herasimtschuk and Andrew Keane were strong off the defensive boards and guards Jay Mustafa and Anthony Verrilli picked off the long rebounds on missed jumpers.

``Passaic Tech wasn't making its shots and we gave them mostly one shot possessions,'' Herasimtschuk said.

Herasimtschuk tallied 20 points for the winners. Mustafa added 11 points. Keane had 9

This year was no different, even though the teams are polar opposites. For two periods, they battled to a scoreless draw, leaving Wayne Valley a bit nervous.

Thirteen seconds into the third period, the Indians finally solved Patriots goaltender Erhan Sarayli and made the goal stand up until an empty-net score concluded a 2-0 win Friday night at the Ice Vault that capped a highlight week for Valley. Click here to read more
