Boys Basketball: Passaic County Tournament Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 45, Passaic Tech 34
Wayne Valley advances to play fourth-seeded Paterson Kennedy, a 47-42 winner over DePaul, in the Passaic County Tournament semifinals at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, at Paterson Kennedy. It marks the fourth time in the last five seasons that Wayne Valley has made it to the semis.
Wayne Valley's game plan was to pass the ball around for as long as it took to get inside shots and it worked to perfection. In fact, of Wayne Valley's 17 field goals, 15 were layups and two were followups.
``We used the two minute drill on offense,'' said senior forward Andrew Herasimtschuk, who collected a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. ``We set back screens and layups. No jump shots. Passaic Tech has a great team and we were out-matched in speed so, we played at our tempo and went for the good shot. This was a big win.''
On defense, against Wayne Valley's 1-3-1 zone, Passaic Tech was ice cold. In the first period, it hit on just 2 of 16 field goal attempts but still the score was tied, 6-6. For the game, out of 14 shots it made from the field, it connected on just one perimeter shot, a 3-pointer. With Tech missing, forwards Herasimtschuk and Andrew Keane were strong off the defensive boards and guards Jay Mustafa and Anthony Verrilli picked off the long rebounds on missed jumpers.
``Passaic Tech wasn't making its shots and we gave them mostly one shot possessions,'' Herasimtschuk said.
Herasimtschuk tallied 20 points for the winners. Mustafa added 11 points. Keane had 9
Boys Basketball: Passaic County Tournament Quarterfinals: Kennedy 47, DePaul 42
With 6-4 senior center Kaheem Davis showing the way down the stretch with four points, Paterson Kennedy scored the last seven points of the game with 52 seconds remaining as Kennedy pulled out the victory in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament at Paterson Kennedy. Kennedy, the fourth seed, moves on to play Wayne Valley, a 45-34 winner over Passaic Tech, in the semis at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Paterson Kennedy.
Two free throws by Davis, who scored eight points in Kennedy's 14-8 fourth period, tied it at 40-40 with 1:33 left, but Na'fee Lighty, with an assist from Josh Marquez, put fifth-seeded DePaul in the lead, 42-40 with 1:13 remaining. However, that was the extent of DePaul's scoring. Davis followed with an inside shot for Kennedy, Jhamir White stole the ball, was fouled and converted two free throws and Dawan Lighty had one foul shot. DePaul missed a free throw and Davis got the rebound, was fouled, and ended the game with two shots from the line.
Davis finished with 13 points and nine rebounds and Jamarr Ellerbee was also a hero for Kennedy with four 3-pointers and 13 points. Davon Jacobs was strong inside for DePaul with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Maquez and Mas Aronson had 10 and 9 points respectively.

Wayne Valley avenged a 63-54 regular-season loss to Passaic in a Jan. 6 game.
``The first time we played them, we played their game - up tempo,'' Larranaga said. ``But today, we stuck to our game plan and were patient. We took good shots and the right shots.''
``In practice, we worked on poise and composure.'' Wayne Valley coach Joe Leicht said. `We want to move the ball around and work for the good shot whether it takes one or 15 passes. But the key is to keep moving and get open.''
Ice Hockey: Mayor's Cup: Wayne Valley 2, Wayne Hills 0
One of the highlights of the hockey season in Wayne is the Mayor’s Cup game between Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills. The rivals always seem to bring great emotion to the contest.
This year was no different, even though the teams are polar opposites. For two periods, they battled to a scoreless draw, leaving Wayne Valley a bit nervous.
Thirteen seconds into the third period, the Indians finally solved Patriots goaltender Erhan Sarayli and made the goal stand up until an empty-net score concluded a 2-0 win Friday night at the Ice Vault that capped a highlight week for Valley. Click here to read more
