Baseball: Wayne Valley 6, Fair Lawn 1

Brian Kokos delivered a two-run single and Anthony Verrilli added an RBI double to key a six-run first inning for Wayne Valley (8-7) in Wayne. James Hegabeli tripled and scored for Fair Lawn (8-8).

Softball: Passaic County Tournament, First Round: Wayne Valley 2, Passaic Valley 0

Jess Pierinelli and Madison Galligan knocked in the runs as Wayne Valley (No. 12) upset Passaic Valley (No. 5). Lindsay Lichtenberger added two hits, while Daniella Wagenti and Dominique Ocello had one each. Niki Carillo tossed a four hitter for the winners.

Baseball: DePaul 7, Don Bosco Prep 2

Kevin Croucher fired a one-hitter, striking out five as DePaul stunned nationally ranked Don Bosco Prep in Wayne. While Don Bosco Prep (12-3) had been rolling, DePaul was 5-6, having lost four of its last five games.

``No, this game doesn't leave me scratching my head,'' DePaul coach Joe Lennon, who has 401 victories, said. ``We're talking about kids and today we played like we should have been playing. We ran into a lull. We started the season at 4-1 beating good teams like Bergen Catholic and Clifton.''

DePaul's A.J. Mott got his team rolling with a two-run triple in the first inning. DePaul enjoyed a 7-0 advantage with a five-run sixth highlighted by a grand slam by Matt Betz.

``We have a good team and we knew we could win if we played our game,'' Croucher said. ``The key for me was that I was getting my curve over for a strike and concentrated on my catcher Matt Cheney and my next pitch. Getting those two runs in the first inning gave us a lot of confidence.''

Kenny O'Donnell had a single in the second inning for Don Bosco Prep's lone hit.

Baseball: Wayne Valley 9, Clifton 2

Junior righty Andrew Furber hurled a six-hitter, striking out seven and walking none, and Pete Savastano had a double, a single and scored three runs for Wayne Valley (7-7) in Wayne.

Justin Avedissian hit a single and knocked in two runs for Wayne Hills (7-6).

Passaic County Tournament Softball, First Round: DePaul 25, Manchester 0

Christina Martinez had three hits, including a home run, drove in four runs and scored two for DePaul (No. 3) in the first round of the Passaic County Tournament in Wayne. Mary Farrington and Margaret Oliver also had four RBI. Chelsea Batelli hit a solo homer and allowed no hits, a walk and struck out nine for DePaul (9-2). Manchester (No. 14) Regional is 2-12.

Sophomore Chris Edie hit a homer, a single, knocked in a run and scored three times and K.C. Abel added a triple, a single and two RBI in a 14-hit offense for Wayne Valley (6-7) in Wayne. Don Cusick earned the win.

Baseball: Passaic Valley 12, DePaul 5

Ryan Carroll doubled, singled and knocked in a run for DePaul (5-6). Shortstop Drew Sous hit two doubles and a single and added five RBI and two runs, while Charles Fletcher pitched a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Passaic Valley (9-4)

Steve Levenbrook had a one-run single for Wayne Hills (7-5). Senior lefty Josh Jensen (4-0) tossed a two-hitter and striking out 10 for West Milford (9-4-1),

Baseball: Wayne Hills 18, Kennedy 8

Catcher Jordan Kessel pounded out a homer, a double, drove in five runs and scored twice and Troy Zaffino ripped two triples and added two RBI and two runs for Wayne Hills (7-4) in Paterson. Designated hitter Rafael Cabrera hit a double and had three RBI and Steven Vasquez added a single and three RBI for Kennedy (0-9).

Baseball: DePaul 15, Eastside 2

Lewis Morrell pitched a six-hitter, with four strikeouts and three walks, and A.J. Mott hit four singles and knocked in four runs for DePaul (5-5). Jose DeLeon had two singles and an RBI for Eastside (0-8-1).

Baseball: Wayne Valley 12, Bergen Catholic 5

K.C. Abel and Anthony Verrilli both had two hits and two RBI for Valley (5-7). Pete Savastano also plated two runs. Chris Edie had two hits and one RBI. Andrew Furber picked up the win.

Watchung Hills Baseball Tournament: Cranford 10, Wayne Hills 0

Pat Gilstrap threw a 65-pitch, five-inning one-hitter with two strikeouts and two walks and also drove in three runs to steer Cranford in the first round of the Watchung Hills Tournament in Warren. Cranford (8-1) will meet South Plainfield in the tournament championship game on April 25 at 3 p.m. Steve Levenbrook had a bloop single in the first inning for Wayne Hills (5-4).

Bulldog Invitational Final: West Milford 5, Wayne Valley 3

Nick Hoy hit a solo homer and Mike Tolerico added three singles for Wayne Valley (4-5). Brady Pevny, a sophomore catcher, got West Milford off to a fast start when he highlighted a four-run first inning with a three-run homer, and his brother, Logan Pevny, hit a solo blast in the fifth in the championship of the Passaic Tech Bulldog Classic in Wayne. The home runs were the only hits for West Milford (6-3-1). Josh Jensen, a senior lefty, tossed a seven-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks for West Milford.

Baseball: Wayne Valley 7, Wayne Hills 3

Mike Tolerico had two hits and three RBI as Valley (4-4) beat Hills (5-3). Pete Savastano and Brian Kokos had two hits and one RBI each. Zach Rosen had a hit and an RBI. KC Abel had two hits. Nick Hoy had an RBI. Kevin Solomon had two hits and three RBI for Hills. Andrew Furber fired a complete game six-hitter as Valley toppled Hills in convincing fashion, 7-3.

“Andrew may not be flashy, but he gets things done,” said Valley coach Jeff Hoover. “He got ahead of some batters today and his change up was really working well. Plus, we played defense really well and ran some balls down in the outfield.”

Baseball: Lakeland 9, DePaul 3

Mike Lembo homered and A.J. Mott tripled and singled for DePaul (4-4). Senior right-hander Mike Gorrell spun a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk, Jon Allard collected four singles and two RBI and Eric Fernandez added a homer, a double and two RBI for Lakeland (5-4).

Baseball: West Milford 14, Wayne Valley 8

Mike Tolerico clubbed in two runs, but Valley (3-4) still lost. Don Cusick, Nick Hoy, Pete Savastano and Anthony Verilli batted in one run apiece.

The boys team championship at Saturday’s Passaic County Relays came down to a battle between Wayne Valley and West Milford. But it was Lakeland’s Kevin Amditis who eventually provided the Indians with a one-point victory. The Wayne Valley girls won their first title since 2005 in more comfortable fashion, capturing five events and scoring in 13 of the 16 to defeat three-time defending champion Clifton, 100-73. George Monsen doubled, stole third and scored the winning run on Gerald DeFilippo's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for DePaul (4-1) in Wayne. DePaul's Joe Lennon earned his 400th career victory in his 32nd season of coaching. Dillon Chorba threw a six-inning five-hitter, striking out 10 and walking three, for DePaul. Jared Skinner had two hits for Queen of Peace (2-2).

Baseball: Bulldog Invitational (at Passaic Tech)

Wayne Valley 15, Hawthorne 2: Anthony Verrilli, a junior rightfielder, slugged a three-run home run in a 13-run second inning for Wayne Valley in the Bulldog Invitational at Passaic Tech in Wayne. K.C. Abel contributed a double, two singles and RBI and two runs for Wayne Valley (2-3) in its 15-hit attack. Andrew Furber went four innings allowing four hits, striking out four and walking two for Wayne Valley. Mike Grofsick hit a solo home run for Hawthorne (1-3).

West Milford 17, Passaic Tech 2: Senior rightfielder Brett Ashley hit a three-run triple and James Bednarovsky added a two-run single in a nine-run fourth inning as West Milford (3-2-1) sent up 15 batters in the opening round of the Bulldog Classic in Wayne. Rich DeGasperis launched a three-run homer in the fifth for West Milford. Tony Ferrari hurled a five-inning complete game, striking out 12 and walking one. Neftali Cespedes belted a solo homer for Passaic Tech (1-5).

Wayne Hills 12, Eastside 2

Jordan Kessel and Kevin Solomon clubbed in three runs for undefeated Wayne Hills (5-0). Justin Ferrella and Andrew Monaghan knocked in two apiece. Tyler Rubino and Troy Zaffino added one RBI apiece. Steve Addesso earned the victory from the hill.

Mike Sweeney drew a one-out walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to win it for host DePaul (3-1) in Wayne. Sweeney and Nick Fondacaro each hit a homer and had four RBI and Mike Lembo also homered for DePaul. Lewis Morrell pitched two innings in relief to get the victory. Remey Rodriguez homered for Passaic Tech (1-4).

Baseball: Wayne Hills 21, Passaic Valley 7

Sophomores Steve Addesso and Troy Zaffino were a combined 7-for-9 with three doubles, two homers, nine RBI and seven runs and Kevin Solomon, headed to the University of Connecticut, added a home run, a double, two singles and six RBI for Wayne Hills (4-0) in Little Falls. Anthony Monetti hit three singles and had an RBI for Passaic Valley (2-2).

Baseball: Sparta 8, Wayne Valley 2

Zach Rosen was 2-for-4 and scored a run, but Wayne Valley (1-3) still lost its third straight. KC Abel had an RBI. Pete Savastano suffered the loss.

Paramus 5, Wayne Valley 3: Pete Savastano collected a double, a single and two RBI for the Indians. Anthony Verilli had two hits and knocked in a run. Mike Tolerico had a double. Zach Rosen, KC Abel and Nick Hoy had singles.

Wayne Hills 5, Lakeland 1: Steven Levenbrook pitched a four hitter for Wayne Hills (3-0). Jordan Kessel, Andrew Monaghan, Tyler Rubino and Troy Zaffino batted in runs. Kevin Solomon tripled.

Fair Lawn 7, DePaul 0: DePaul (2-1) suffered its first defeat Monday when they lost to Fair Lawn, 7-0. Nick Fondacaro got tagged with the loss.

Baseball: DePaul 3, Clifton 2

Ryan Carroll's liner off the first basemen's glove in the top of the sixth scored A.J. Mott to tied things up. Next, Nick Fondaccaro lined one off the third basemen's glove to score Carroll and give DePaul (2-0) to the lead. Dillon Chorba and Lewis Morrell combined for a five-hitter.

"Dillon had command of his fast ball and hit some spots," said DePaul coach Joe Lennon. And then Lewis came in and that's two games in a row we've had guys come in and pitch scoreless innings."

Matt Cheney also had an RBI for the Spartans.

Mike Tolerico had a triple and three RBI for Wayne Valley in its opening day win. Pete Savastano struck out nine and surrendered just one hit, a second inning infield hit. Don Cusick, Joe Duncan, K.C. Abel, Ryan Gomez, Josh Marks and Savastano knocked in a run apiece. Abel, Hoy and Marks had doubles.

Baseball: DePaul 7, Bergen Catholic 1

Starter Kevin Croucher pitched five innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Matt Betz hit a home run for DePaul in the season opener. Relief pitcher Nick Fondacaro, who came through with a triple, sacrifice fly and two RBI, threw the final two innings, didn't relinquish a run and struck out four.

Baseball: Wayne Hills 5, Passaic 3

Senior Steve Levenbrook hit a two-run single and pitched two innings to get the save. Kevin Solomon, who batted .486 last season, added a single, an RBI and a run for Wayne Hills in the the season opener. Starter Brian Dowling went five innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs for Wayne Hills. Passaic pitcher Juan Anziani hit two singles and delivered a run and Ferny Castro chipped in with a single and two RBI.
