Mike Quinn's 23 yard touchdown pass to a diving Omar Manasrah in overtime gave Wayne Hills (10-1) the win.

"I actually thought I was going to get sacked on the play, but I saw Omar out of the corner of my eye and just threw it up there for him," Quinn said.

Quinn finished 16-for-21 with 264 yards and five touchdowns. Three of Quinn's scoring strikes and a 1 yard Brian Dowling touchdown run helped Wayne Hills build a commanding 28-7 lead. James Hogan caught Quinn's first TD toss, a 26 yarder. Manasrah (23 yards) and Dowling (50 yards) had Quinn's second and third scoring strikes. Quinn threw his fourth score to Mike Driesse to give Wayne Hills a 35-20 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Sparta roared back, despite losing senior quarterback Doug D’Angelo to an ankle injury just before halftime. The comeback started when Steven Viegas caught a 16 yard pass from Sean Geary, D'Angelo's replacement. Zach Passerelle tacked on TD runs of 23 and 5 yards. Julian Farinola had a 3 yard scoring sprint to pull Sparta within 35-33 with just under a minute to go in regulation. Geary's two-point conversion pass to Steve Viegas at the end of regulation sent the game into the overtime. Sparta went up 38-35 in overtime on an Evan Costello 37 yard field goal

Sparta's first half touchdown came on a 49 yard pass from D'Angelo to Farinola.
Hills will play Ramapo in the final. Ramapo defeated Paramus in the other semifinal game. The two schools have played in the final game on four previous occasions: 1993, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Shakim Phillips, DePaul's Boston College bound receiver, went down with a sprained left shoulder in the second quarter. The Spartans were never the same. Early on, it appeared as if DePaul (7-3) would march to an easy win. They scored the first two times they touched the ball and led 14-7 when the injury occurred.

"It’s a very tough loss for all of us," said Dan Foesel, a junior tight end/defensive end. "We all wanted to make a run for all the seniors. Shakim went down and when he took his pads off at halftime, it was crushing to a lot of the kids on the team."

The Spartans jumped in front, 7-0, after Phillips caught Dan Kowal’s pass at the line of scrimmage and beat three Holy Spirit defenders to the end zone for a 30-yard score. DePaul's second score came on a Kowal quarterback sneak.

Nigel Jones got Holy Spirit on the board in the second period with a one yard push. They tied the game when Dan Nair returned an interception 74 yards. Foesel’s 25-yard touchdown reception helped give DePaul a 21-14 lead with 5:59 left in the third quarter.

Holy Spirit rallied with touchdown runs by Joe Callahan and Donte Pollack in the fourth quarter to defeat DePaul.

Holy Spirit’s offense suffered a loss late in the third quarter, too, when standout sophomore tailback Jones left the game with an undisclosed injury following a 49-yard run.

"It was very hard just watching my team out there,’ Phillips said. "No words could explain it."

Section I, Group III Consolation Game: Wayne Valley 16, West Milford 0

Wayne Valley (6-4) blanked West Milford to finish with its fifth straight winning season. Pete Savastano and Greg LaNeve scored on runs of 2 and 8 respectively. They added to the lead when West Milford snapped a punt out of the end zone.

Cross Country: Wayne Valley Takes Group III Championship

In order to take the next step in cross-country, Salim Corbin had to sacrifice one of his favorite times to race – the summer. Corbin, who first made a splash with success in age-group track and field while in middle school, gave up his first love, summer track, last summer to prepare for his senior cross-country season at Eastside.

Saturday, as he has all year, Corbin proved his decision was a wise one. Corbin won the North 1, Group 3 title, by more than 200 meters to become Eastside’s first sectional champion. He also took down the school record at Garret Mountain that had stood for 29 years with a 16:16 clocking to earn a spot in next week’s State Group championships at Holmdel County Park.

Corbin was by joined by Group 2 individual winner Nick Ward of Indian Hills and Group 3 team winner Wayne Valley as North Jersey champions. In all, nine North Jersey boys team and nine other individuals advanced to next week’s meet. Read More

Football: DePaul 29, Lakeland 0

Wymere Robinson rushed for two first-half touchdowns to lead DePaul (7-2) to a 29-0 victory against Lakeland (6-3) last night in Wanaque. Robinson scored the first two TDs, on runs of one and two yards, to give DePaul a 14-0 lead. Dan Kowal threw a 15-yard TD pass to Drew Feniello in the second quarter and Shakim Phillips scored on a 31-yard run in the fourth. Michael Burgio kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter.

"We've been playing well for a while now, since our loss to Paramus (Sept. 25)," head coach John McKenna said. "We've got some momentum heading into the states."

Three DePaul players ran for 100-plus yards. Robinson led the way with 108 yards. Freshman Joe Moreno tacked on 107 yards. Kowal was next with 100 yards. Jon Wonzey led the defense with 10 tackles. Kevin Murray and Christopher Fallone had 8 tackles apiece. John Proctor had 7 tackles. Dan Foesel, John Weiss and Frank Wukovitz had sacks. Proctor and Drew Feniello had interceptions.

The win gave DePaul the North Jersey Tri-Conference Division V championship. It also avenges last year's 21-14 loss to Lakeland in last year's conference deciding game.

"They (Lakeland) took our conference championship last year," said tightend/defensive end Foesel. "We didn't want the same thing to happen this year. It's good to get this one going into the states."

DePaul will likely get the No. 3 seed in the Non Public Group III State Playoffs. The team's opponent has yet to be determined.

Dom Santoro rushed for three touchdowns and Brian Dowling and Trevor Jacobs each had two touchdowns to power Wayne Hills (8-1) to victory against Dickinson (0-9) yesterday in Jersey City. Santoro rushed for three TDs in the second half, including a 52-yard score. Dowling rushed for a 19-yard TD and caught a 21-yard TD from Mike Quinn. Quinn also threw an 11-yard TD to Nick Tumminello. Jacobs rushed for a TDs of 5 and 2 yards in the first quarter. James DeDilectis pounded in a 1-yard TD in the second quarter.

Hills will likely get the No. 1 seed in the Section I, Group III playoffs, which start next week. They currently trail Tenafly for the top spot, but should leap frog them once the residual power points are tabulated. This is the 7th time Hills has attained the top seed (1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009). Next week's opponent has not yet been determined.

Pete Savastano rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Wayne Valley (5-4) to a 61-0 victory against Memorial West New York (2-7). Savastano threw a 25-yard TD pass to Anthony Verrilli and rushed for TDs of 15 and 2 yards. Verilli also returned an interception for a 35-yard score. Greg LaNeve rushed for two TDs, including a 50-yard TD burst in the first quarter. Hani Katerji ran for a 3-yard TD and recovered a fumble in the end zone. Mark Giannini had a 7-yard TD run.

Savastano had 70 passing yards. LaNeve rushed for 87 yards. Michael Miller tacked on 47 rushing yards. Franco Rosella and Andrew DeFilippis had 8 tackles apiece. Anthony Perez had 7 tackles. Nick Billy had a fumble recovery.

Valley will not qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2004. They will conclude the season with a consolation game next week. Should they win, they will finish with their 5th consecutive winning season.

Volleyball: Wayne Valley rolls to another County title
