Boys Basketball: 2008 DePaul Season In Review

2/28/08: Non Public North A First Round: Seton Hall Prep 60, DePaul 38: Injured Justin Crosgile returned to the lineup, but DePaul (No. 4, 18-5) still lost to Seton Hall Prep (No. 5). The junior suffered a high ankle sprain a week ago and it was feared he would miss the remainder of the season. He tallied 13 points in the loss. Shakim Phillips added 10 points. Ashton Gibbs led Seton Hall with 28 points.

2/22/08: DePaul 61, St. Mary's 48: DePaul (18-4) keeps winning in the absence of injured Justin Crosgile. Shakim Phillips and Karam Simmons led the way with 16 and 15 points respectively. Ahmad Smallwood added 10 points. Mike Hennion had 7. Head Coach Bart Fazio fears that Crosgile will miss the rest of the season. DePaul's leading scorer suffered a high ankle sprain against Pequannock.

2/20/08: DePaul 61, Madison 48: Mike Hennion scored 21 points as DePaul clinched a share of the Northern Hills Suburban title for the second year in a row and for the fourth time in six years. Shakim Phillips added 17 points. Matt Miller had 11.


2/16/08: DePaul 65, Caldwell 64: Shakim Phillips led DePaul (16-4) with 22 points. Kamar Simmons and Mike Hennion had 14 and 13 points respectively.
2/15/08: DePaul 72, Pequannock 60: Justin Crosgile had 29 points for DePaul (15-4). Shakim Phillips added 17 points and Kamar Simmons scored 14 for the Spartans. Jordan Tabakman finished with 15 points and Nick Buonforte scored 14 for Pequannock (8-14).

2/2/08: Passaic County Tournament, Quarterfinals: Eastside 90, DePaul 78: DePaul (No. 3, 14-4) will not repeat as Passaic County Champs. The team's fate was sealed with a drubbing from Eastside (No. 6, 14-5). Shakim Phillips and Justin Crosgile pumped in 22 points each, but it was not enough. Dave Robertson had 22 points for the Ghosts. Karon Abraham added 22 points.

"They had a lot of second chances on the glass," Crosgile said. "That was the big difference. They just wanted it more than we did."

2/2/08: Passaic County Tournament, First Round: DePaul 74, Lakeland 64: Justin Crosgile tallied 22 points and pulled down 9 rebounds as DePaul (No. 3) advanced past Lakeland (No. 14). Shakim Phillips added 20 points. Kamar Simmons had 9 points and 15 rebounds. Brian McKinnless and Mike Gibbons had 17 and 15 points respectively for the Lancers. DePaul will play Eastside in the quarterfinals next week.

2/1/08: DePaul 50, Montville 31: Matt Miller led DePaul (12-3) with 12 points. Justin Crosgile and Joe Giacchi had 10 points apiece.

1/30/08: DePaul 78, Butler 29: Shakim Phillips had 24 points for DePaul (11-3). Justin Crosgile netted 17. Jason Grippenberg paced Butler with 10 points.

1/25/08: Delbarton 66, DePaul 54: Justin Crosgile had 18 points and Shakim Phillips had 10, but DePaul (10-3) still lost.

1/21/08: Freedom Fighters Classic (Eastside High School): DePaul 64, Passaic Tech 61, By Skiffo Drake: DePaul erased a 19-point deficit to win. Spartan Joe Giacchi's hit two foul shots to tie the game with 25 seconds remaining. Justin Crosgile then stole the ball on the press and laid the ball in to give DePaul the lead for good. The lead was the first of the game for DePaul, which could not manage a single field goal in the first period and had just six at halftime.

Tech built up its lead in the first half, when Larry Burroughs scored 14 of his team-high 20 and Maynard Freeman had 12 of his 14 points. Asmar Edwards finished with 14 points and 10 boards for Tech.

Crosgile finished the night with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Shakim Phillips scored 14 points for DePaul.Kamar Simmons had 12 rebounds and 10 points.

“It’s a great win for us because it was a great comeback,” DePaul coach Bart Fazio said. “We have this type of team and then we have the type of player (Crosgile) who can put us on his back and carry us at the end, and he did.”

1/19/08: DePaul 64, Madison 47: Justin Crosgile threw in 28 points to spark DePaul (9-2). Shakim Phillips added 10 points. Kamar Simmons had 8.

1/15/08: DePaul 71, Pequannock 65: Justin Crosgile had 24 points to lead DePaul (8-2). Shakim Phillips added 17 points. Kamar Simmons was next with 11 points. Pequannock got 25 points from Nick Buonforte. Jordan Tabakman and Martin Kelly had 14 and 13 points respectively. More Pictures.


1/12/08: DePaul 62, Caldwell 39: Justin Crosgile knocked down 19 points for DePaul. Matt Miller and Shakim Phillips chipped in with 10 apiece.

1/6/08: DePaul 71, Lakeland 49: Kamar Simmons and Justin Crosgile tallied 17 points apiece to help lift DePaul to its sixth-straight win. Mike Hennion added 15 points. Matt Miller had 11. Brian McKinnless led Lakeland with 17 points.


1/4/08: DePaul 64, Montville 45: Justin Crossgile scored 23 points and the Spartans pulled away with a 19-3 second-quarter effort. Kamar Simmons and Shakim Phillips added 11 and 10 points respectively. Mike Hennion added 9 points. Joe Kim scored 15 and Robert Jagessar chipped in by scoring all 13 of his points in the first half for the Mustangs (4-3).

12/27/07: JP Flynn Christmas Tournament Final: DePaul 50, Delbarton 48 (Delbarton): Two weeks after losing a regular season game to Delbarton, DePaul stormed back to avenge the loss and win a tournament title. The Spartans, who lost their first two games of the season, have now won four straight. Justin Crosgile came up with a steal and a layup in the waning moments to deliver the verdict. The junior finished with 16 points. Mike Hennion added 12 points. Shakim Phillips added 9.

12/27/07: JP Flynn Christmas Tournament: DePaul 60, Mendham 44 (Mendham): Shakim Phillips led DePaul (3-2) with 24 points. Kamar Simmons and Mike Henion added 11 and 10 respectively.


12/27/07: JP Flynn Christmas Tournament: DePaul 71, West Morris 65 (Mendham): Justin Crosgile registered 24 points to lead DePaul (3-2) in this first round game. Mike Hennion contributed 15 points. Shakim Phillips (14 points) and Kamar Simmons (10 points) also reached double digits.

12/22/07: DePaul 77, Butler 33: Justin Crosgile scored 31 points to surpass the 1,000-point career milestone. Ed Pauloski and Shakim Phillips had 9 and 8 points respectively for DePaul (1-2). Adam Elgarhi led Butler with 14 points.


12/15/07: Passaic Valley 66, DePaul 61: Matt Piccarelli had 18 points and Joe Mourad had 15 as PV topped DePaul in the opener. Shane Leibiedz and Dom Corio added 11 and 9 points respectively. Justin Crosgile and Kendall Simmons had 19 and 17 points respectively for DePaul.
