Baseball: Wayne Hills 2006 Year In Review

Patriots bow out in State play

Wayne Hills’ first appearance in two years in the North One, Group Three baseball tournament was short-lived. The Patriots fell to Morris Hills 5-3 on Monday in a first round game played in Rockaway, NJ. In 2004, Coach Chris Ianneillo’s squad dropped a first round game at Paramus.

In a start similar to their Passaic County quarterfinal loss at Lakeland on Saturday, Hills (13-13) played small ball to score an early run. Justin Donnarumma singled and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before coming around to score the game’s first run.

But Mo Hills quickly responded as they nicked starter Sean Colligan, who absorbed the loss, for a pair of runs and later extended the lead to 4-1. The Patriots closed the gap to 4-3 in the fifth and had the tying run aboard in the 6th but could not push it across.

Morris Hills added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and Wayne Hills went down in order in the seventh.

The Patriots will close out the 2006 season with a pair of NBIL games this week. On Tuesday, they host Indian Hills and will travel to Pascack Hills for the final game on Wednesday afternoon.
