Football: DePaul 2008 Season In Review

11/14/08: Consolation Game: DePaul 35, Paramus Catholic 28: DePaul finished its season at 8-2. It ended with a win over Paramus Catholic. Dan Farley rush for scores of 10, 1 and 9 yards. He also threw a nine yard touchdown to Jon Wozney. Shakim Phillips ran for a 9 yard touchdown.

11/7/08: DePaul 42, Wayne Valley 35, By Skiffo Drake: DePaul (7-2) got off on the right foot when sophomore John Proctor recovered a Mike Castles fumble on the opening kickoff. Four plays later they punched the ball in when James Jurewicz slammed into the end zone from a yard out. Shortly thereafter, it appeared as if the rout was on. DePaul increased its lead to 20-0 by scoring on its next two possessions. First, Dan Farley connected with Dan Foesel for an 11 yard score. Jurewicz scored the third touchdown on a four yard run. DePaul missed the first two point-after attempts. They made some of it up when Shakim Phillips caught a two point conversion throw from Farley. Phillips had 40-yard plus runs on both the second and third touchdown drives.

Valley (7-2) then mounted a furious comeback and ended up taking a 21-20 lead. They got on the board when Pete Savastano unleashed a 55 yard touchdown bomb to Colton Callaghan. Next,
Ryan Durr returned a punt for a 74 yard score. Pat LaNeve scored next on a one yard rush. His younger brother, Greg LaNeve, set up the score with a 45 yard run to the one yard line. Matt Deitz supplied all three extra points to give Valley the lead. DePaul took a 28-21 lead into intermission when Foesel pulled in a 9 yard scoring strike from Farley. DePaul tacked on a two point conversion on a Farley run.

Valley tied it again in the third when Durr rushed for a 35 yard score. DePaul retook the lead when Farley found Phillips for a 33 yard score. Valley answered with a Savastano to Durr 35 yard score. DePaul pulled it out when Jurewicz scored on a bullish three yard run with 12 seconds to go. Farley had a 14 yard completion to John Weiss on the drive. Greg LaNeve returned the ensuring kickoff to the DePaul 41 yard line, giving Valley one last shot. The desperation failed when Savastano, under heavy pressure, dumped the ball to Durr, who was immediately gang tackled.

10/31/08: Lakeland 21, DePaul 14: DePaul's James Jurewicz scored a two yard touchdown to tie the game with 2:36 remaining. Mike Burgio had the extra point. Unbeaten Lakeland (8-0) pulled out the win when Bobby Thompson scored on a three yard rush with 40 seconds left. The drive featured a 41 yard rush for Dan Deighan. That play occured on a third-and-three.
Deighan finished with 206 rushing yards. That included 91 and 70 yard touchdowns. Zach Protin had 20 tackles for Lakeland. Jurewicz also scored on a one yard run for DePaul (6-2).

10/24/08: Delbarton 50, DePaul 21: DePaul raced to a 7-0 advantage when Dan Farley hit Shakim Phillips with two yard touchdown toss. That would be one of the only highlights for the Spartans (6-1), who were soundly defeated. Farley found Phillips for two second half touchdowns (3 & 9 yards).
Jurewicz rushed for 82 yards, well below his average of`158 yards per game. Phillips lined up in the backfield on several occasions, picking up 52 yards. With Jurewicz nuetralized, Farley threw for 219 yards. Phillips and Dan Fossel had 98 and 80 yards receiving respectively. T.J. Kowal had 12 tackles. Jonathan Wozney had eight tackles. Nick Kline, Kevin Stark and Craig Zimmer had six tackles apiece. Dan Kowal and Fossel had five tackles each.
DePaul had outscored its first six opponents, 261-35. The narrowest margin was 16 points. Now they will have to beat playoff bound Lakeland this coming week to assure themselves of a post season bid.

10/18/08: DePaul 42, Butler 7: James Jurewicz carried 27 times for 283 yards and five touchdowns when DePaul defeated Butler. Jurewicz now leads Passaic County with 19 touchdowns and 1,361 yards. Quarterback Dan Farley completed all four of his nine passes to wide out Shakim Phillips for 104 yards and a score. Jurewicz rushed for a 6-yard TD bolt in the first period and then had TD runs of 40 and 2 yards in the second. Butler's Mike Fitzpatrick caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Peter Brand in the second period, but DePaul held a 21-7 halftime advantage. DePaul wrapped it up in the third quarter with three touchdowns as Jurewicz had runs of TD 62 and 5 yards and Phillips scored a 60-yard pass from Farley.


10/10/08: DePaul 49, Madison 14: Unbeaten DePaul trailed at the intermission, 7-6, but rallied with a 43-point second half. Wide receiver Shakim Phillips caught a 66-yard pass from Dan Farley as DePaul jumped to a 6-0 lead. Madison took the lead when Aaron Fant hauled in a 22-yard pass from Noah Ellis and Ed McAndrew hit a conversion kick.
However, the second half belonged to DePaul. It scored 22 points in the third period on TD rushes of 34 and 23 yards by James Jurewicz and an 8-yard burst by Farley.
After Matt McHale scored on a 1-yard plunge for Madison, Phillips followed with an 85-yard kickoff return for DePaul (5-0). John Weiss caught a 9-yard TD toss from Farley and Wymere Robinson rushed 65 yards for a score for DePaul. Jurewicz rushed for 165 yards. He now has 1,078 in just five games.
DePaul is off to its best start since 1996, when went 10-0, before losing to Pope John-Sparta in the final.

10/3/08: DePaul 34, Pequannock 18: Dan Farley threw touchdowns to Shakim Phillips (32 yards), Danny Martin (10 yards) and John Wozney (7 yards) as DePaul (4-0) remained unbeaten. James Jurewicz ran for 268 yards and touchdowns of 11 and 5 yards. T.J. Ingrino scored for Pequannock on a 28 yard rush and a 21 yard pass from Ryan Griffin. Alex Helmer also grabbed a touchdown toss (5 yards) from Griffin.

9/27/08: DePaul 37, Caldwell 7, By Skiffo Drake: James Jurewicz carried 37 times for 229 yards and four touchdowns. The offensive line, with Nick Kline, Zamaile Blue, Craig Zimmer, Kevin Stark and Matt Goerl, does the blocking up front. The Wayne school has outscored its opponents, 106-26, in winning its first three games. Dan Farley threw a touchdown pass to wideout Shakim Phillips. DePaul's defense, featuring linemen Kline and Stark and linebacker T.J. Kowal, allowed just 64 yards rushing.
DePaul scored on its first four possessions. The first time it went 76 yards in 13 plays with Jurewicz bursting 3 yards up the middle for the score. John Wozney plunged a yard for a TD as DePaul moved in front, 13-0, in the first period.
In the second quarter, Farley lofted a pass that was underthrown into the end zone. Phillips reached over a defender and pulled down the ball for the score.
Wozney, this time as a linebacker, set up DePaul's next score when he intercepted at Caldwell's 8-yard line. Two plays later, Jurewicz went over from the 3 and DePaul extended its advantage to 25-0.

After a scoreless third quarter, DePaul scored twice in the fourth. The first TD was set up on a fumble recovery by John Proctor at Caldwell's 15. Jurewicz did the honors from the 1 and later raced untouched into the end zone from the 9. Phillips helped set it up with a 31-yard rush.
DePaul coach John McKenna said he wasn't pleased with his team's performance.

``If we want to win a conference and state championship, we can't play like this,'' the coach said.

``Our last three games are against Delbarton, Lakeland and Wayne Valley. We looked out of shape. We have a lot of work to do.''

9/20/08: DePaul 41, Orange 19 (Wayne): James Jurewicz rushed for four touchdowns and quarterback Dan Farley threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score when DePaul defeated Orange. Shakim Phillips caught a 7-yard TD pass from Farley.

9/13/08: DePaul 26, Cranford 0 (at Cranford): James Jurewicz rushed for touchdowns of 6 and 3 yards. Shakim Phillips had a 66 yards touchdown reception from Dan Farley. Farley also rushed for a score. Jurewicz finished with 152 ground yards. Farley had 121 yards passing.
