2007 Wayne Valley Baseball Season In Review

Passaic County Semifinals: Passaic Tech 5, Wayne Valley 3

Passaic Tech (No. 3, 17-7) went in front 1-0 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Onix Ortiz, but Wayne Valley (No. 2, 18-8) forged a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Charlie Rigoglioso.

Passaic Tech broke through scoring four runs in the sixth. Winning pitcher Anthony Collazo struck out on a pitch in the dirt and reached second when the catcher threw it over the first baseman's head. Benny Mejia reached on the shortstop's error and Juan Padilla made them pay when he launched a three-run homer to centerfield. The next batter, Kerwin Rivera, also homered to center as Passaic Tech built a 5-2 advantage.

"I struck out and grounded out my first two times up but the third time I was more patient," said Padilla. "We fell behind but I wasn't worried. One time we were behind 11-0 here and won."

Colazzo improved to 8-1. In five innings the senior lefty, struck out seven and gave up four hits before reliever Onix Ortiz entered in the sixth.

"I didn't have my best stuff," Collazo said. "I felt like my body was ahead of my arm. My arm was dragging behind."

Passaic Tech's late-inning rejuvenation surprised no one on the Bulldogs' energetic bench given the team's year-long penchant for comebacks. Most notably, it erased a seven-run deficit in the seventh inning in an April 7 game against Pequannock.

"At this place, the game can turn in a heartbeat," Passaic Tech head coach Jim Lentine said. "We've been behind so many times this season and come back. If it would have come down to the seventh inning with two outs, then I would have been desperate. But the game can turn with a few swings here."

Wayne Valley (18-8) played nearly flawless baseball in the first five innings, making every defensive play behind the three-hit pitching of right-hander Derrick Bligh, who beat Passaic Tech 1-0 on April 14.
