Boys Basketball: Wayne Hills 2005-2006 Season In Review

2/25/06: Wayne Hills 66, Manchester 46: Scott Schultz tossed in 21 points as Wayne Hills (11-14) walloped Manchester (11-15). Steve Lequerica dropped 14 points. Joe Russo added 10. Nick Romeo contributed seven points.

2/22/06: Wayne Hills 56, West Essex 54: Scott Schultz had 20 points to lead Wayne Hills (10-14) past West Essex. Steve Lequerica chipped in with 15 points. Joe Russo and Mike Peischl had eight and seven points respectively.

2/17/06: Wayne Hills 47, Fair Lawn 45: Hills (9-13) scored its fourth straight triumph by edging Fair Lawn (11-11). Scott Schultz led with 12 points. Mike Peischl and Steve Lequercia had 10 points apiece Nick Romeo and Joe Russo tallied six points each.

2/15/06: Wayne Hills 55, Demarest 43: Suddenly hot Hills (8-13) has rattled off five wins in two weeks. The youthful Patriots started off 3-11, before rebounding for a strong February. Freshmen Steve Lequercia tallied 19 points to lead the Patriots past Demarest. Mike Peischl hit for 14 points.

2/12/06: Wayne Hills 59, Hawthorne 49: Joe Russo scored 17 points to lead Hills (7-13) past Hawthorne. Steven Lequerica and Scott Schlutz had 13 and 12 respectively.

2/9/06: Wayne Hills 53, Ramapo 44: Wayne Hills (6-13) won its second straight game this week by downing Ramapo, its biggest rival. The Patriots beat Bergenfield earlier in the week. Three players reached double-figures in the Ramapo game. Steve Lequerica led the way with 15 points. Joe Russo and Mike Peischl added 12 and 10 points respectively. Scott Schultz had nine points.

2/2/06: Old Tappan 59, Wayne Hills 36: Joe Russo tallied 13 points for Wayne Hills. Mike Pieschl chipped in with 9.

1/30/06: Wayne Hills 52, Garfield 40: Scott Schultz tallied 18 points to lead Hills (4-11) past Garfield. Steve Lequerica added 13 points. Mike Pieschl and Mike Colacurcio chipped in with 10 points each.

1/29/06: Passaic County Tournament: Passaic Tech 72, Wayne Hills 60: Two Wayne schools, Wayne Hills (No. 16) and Passaic Tech (No. 17), squared off in the Passaic County Tournament play-in game.

Passaic Tech (2-12) is a perennial Passaic County and State Sectional contender. In fact, in 2004 they reached the Passaic County final and won the Section I, Group IV championship. This year, though, they are suffering through growing pains normally unseen at Tech.

The Bulldogs suffered numerous off-season losses to graduation. The biggest setback was the graduation of Hashim “Big City” Bailey. The former Bulldog is spending a year in prep school before heading off to play for John Calipari at Memphis.

"We haven't been through something like this in a long time," said Ron Austin, Tech’s coach since 1983. “This learning process is taking a lot longer than we thought."

Against Hills (3-11), Tech’s woes were not apparent.

Larry Burroughs led Tech with 24 points. Nyah Rickets and Saquan Gary also helped the cause with 19 and 17 points respectively.

Scott Schultz led the Patriots with 17 points. Mike Colacurcio and Steve Lequerica had 10 apiece.. Nick Romeo chipped in with 9 points. Joe Russo added 7.

Passaic Tech will play top-seeded Kennedy in the first round Saturday.



1/26/06: Mahwah 62, Wayne Hills 42: Scott Schultz led Wayne Hills (3-10) with 16 points. Mike Peischl had 10.

1/25/06: Northern Highlands 44, Wayne Hills 40: Joe Russo had 12 points and Scott Schultz had 9, but Wayne Hills (3-9) still suffered a narrow loss to Northern Highlands (6-5). Steve Lequerica added 8 points.

1/19/06: Pascack Hills 71, Wayne Hills 51: Scott Schultz scored 18 points, but Wayne Hills still lost. Mike Colacurcio and Steven Lequerica tallied 10 apiece.



1/18/06: Pascack Valley 77, Wayne Hills 73, OT: Scott Schultz hit for a career-high 29 points, but Hills (3-7) still suffered an overtime set back.



1/13/06: Wayne Hills 53, Ramsey 39: Mike Colacurcio exploded for 19 points as Hills (3-6) triumphed. Scott Schultz added 14 points. Justin Donnarumma had 7 points.



1/10/06: Fair Lawn 52, Wayne Hills 41: Mike Colacurcio scored 11 points, but Hills (2-5) still lost.



1/6/06: Wayne Hills 42, Demarest 38: Hills (2-4) won its second straight game with a victory over Demarest (2-4). Mike Colacurcio tallied 14 points for Wayne. Scott Schultz added 12. Justin Donnaruma chipped in 9.



1/5/07: Wayne Hills 50, Ramapo 48: The Patriots (1-4) earned their first victory of the season by defeating Ramapo. Scott Schultz scored a team-high 15 points. Mike Colacurcio added 13 points. Justin Donnarumma had eight.

Schultz corralled a team-high 11 rebounds. Nick Romeo had four steals. Mike Peischl hit four three throws late in the fourth period.

12/20/05: Bergenfield 56, Wayne Hills 53: Freshmen Joe Russo led the team with 19 points, but Hills still lost. Nick Romeo added 10 points.


12/16/05: Old Tappan 51, Wayne Hills 37: Freshmen Steve Lequerica led the way with 11 points, but Hills still lost its opener with Old Tappan. Mike Peischl added eight points.
