Football: Perkiomen Valley 42, Downingtown West 41

Pennsylvania Football At It's Best! Downingtown West looked like world-beaters on it's first possession, scoring on a 7 play, 80 yard drive to start the game. For much of the first three quarters, though, Perkiomen Valley seemed to be in control, as they led Downingtown West 42-14 with 8 minutes left in the game.

That's when Downingtown's resolve stiffened. They showed why they are widely known as a powerhouse by rattling off four touchdowns in 8 minutes to pull within 42-41 with just over a minute to play. Instead of going to the extra point, Downingtown went for two and the likely win. The attempt failed. Next up for Downingtown West is Wayne Valley (Friday, 7:00 p.m. at famed Kottmeyer Stadium in Downingtown).

Wayne Valley head coach Roger Kotlarz was very impressed with Downingtown West.

"We were looking to play a great team on opening night and it's pretty clear that we are going to get just that," he said. "They had the misfortune of opening up against a formidable, more experienced team in Perkiomen Valley. Downingtown West fell behind, but never quit. They were resilient and courageous in the way they fought back. It probably would have been better for us if they pulled it out. Now we're going to have to go against a very good team that will probably feel like it's back is up against the wall. It should be a great game. Kottmeyer Stadium is great high school football atmosphere. I'm looking forward to it."

A great story on the game:
