Jets: Wayne Valley's Chris Pantale promoted to active roster

Wayne Valley graduate Chris Pantale has been promoted to the New York Jets active roster. Pantale started for three years at Valley for head coach Brian O’Connor. The team went 28-5 those three years. Pantale (44) is pictured above during the 2007 Final against Wayne Hills at the Meadowlands. Pantale also played for Joe Leicht’s Wayne Valley basketball team. In two years as the starting center (pictured below in a State Tournament game against Wayne Hills), Pantale helped lead Valley to a the County and State Sectional title as a junior and to the State Sectional championship as a senior.

Pompton Lakes Going For Three-Peat

Wayne neighbor Pompton Lakes beat Verona Saturday in the Section I, Group I semifinals to advance to the finals. They will take on Hasbrouck Heights Friday, December 6 in attempt to win their third straight title. Pompton has claimed five State Sectional titles (1982, 1997, 2005, 2011, 2012) since the playoff system began in 1974. Prior to that, they won titles in 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1945, 1954, 1960, 1961. Below are photo from the Pompton Lakes-Verona semifinal game

Football: Section I, Group IV Quarterfinals: Northern Highlands 17, Wayne Hills 14

Northern Highlands (No. 4) jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Wayne Hills (No. 4, 5-5) rallied with two touchdown passes by Justin DeGroat to Nick Falzarano and Erik Martinez in the fourth quarter, but the comeback bid fell short.

Holden Rosen-Grupp returned an interception for a touchdown and caught a conversion pass as Northern Highland. Kyle Wilcyznski had a touchdown run and Rob Hinchen kicked a field goal.

Football: Section I, Group IV Consolation: Nutley 38, Wayne Valley 34

Billy Crank threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns, but Valley (4-6) still lost it's season finale to Nutley (5-5). Sophomore Nick Goodwin had 8 receptions for 189 yards and two scores (56 & 53 yards). Liam Connors had 6 receptions for 92 yards. Junior Mark DeLuise had 81 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving, including a 7 yard touchdown reception. Sophomore Vinny Tedesco had 5 catches, including a 5 yard touchdown reception. Justin Plunkett had a 6 yard touchdown reception.

Section I, Group IV Boys Soccer Championship: Northern Highlands 2, Wayne Hills 1, OT

Tyler Kulcsar scored the Wayne Hills goal on an assist from Mesa Gega. Grant Kelly had 12 saves for Wayne. Kyle Bissell and Cal Portnoy scored a goal apiece to lead Northern Highlands to a 2-1 victory over Wayne Hills in the championship game of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Allendale.

Erica Knudsen had five saves for top seeded Hills (19-3). Noreen Byrne scored the winning goal for River Dell (No. 4) in the 27th minute.

Hills (5-4) struck first on an Erik Martinez 25-yard field goal. Later, Joe Kenny caught a 23-yard scoring strike from Pete Palczewski.

Palczewski finished with 57 passing yards. Nick Falzarano had four receptions. Justin DeGroat ran for 53 yards. Kyle Brackett led the defense with 8 tackles. Martin Kilroy added 7 tackles. Tom Ramsay and Anthony Kenny had 6 spills apiece. Justin Hogan and Falzarano had 5 tackles each.

It is believed that Hills will obtain the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Section I, Group IV playoffs. They will most likely host Randolph. a perennial power in Morris County.

Football: DePaul 48, Wayne Valley 12

Zach Bednarczyk threw a 41 yard touchdown pass to Justin Nelson and a 95 yard touchdown pass to Hasise Duboise to lead DePaul (7-2) past Wayne Valley (4-5). Duboise also returned an interception for a 90 yard score. Markey Clark added two 6 yard scoring rushes. Stephen Speidel ran for a 3 yard touchdown and Nassir Hooker ran for a 43 yards score.

Billy Crank threw an 8 yard touchdown to Liam Connors for Valley. Nick Goodwin threw a 20 yard touchdown to Rick Brunje for Valley's next score. Crank finished with a career high 325 passing yards. Goodwin accumulated with 115 receiving yards. Mark DeLuise and Anthony Duncan had 86 and 66 yards respectively. Anthony Cerciello had 109 kickoff return yards. Cerciello also led the defense with 8 tackles. Dave Drozjock had 6 tackles and Jason Dinan had 5. Added to the injury list for Valley this week was Drozjock, Ryan Mac Donald and Justin Walker.

DePaul is expected to obtain the No. 2 seed in the upcoming North A, Non-Public playoffs. They currently occupy the No. 1 spot, but it appears that Holy Spirit-Absecon will muster enough power points to claim the top seed. Wayne Valley will make the Section I, Group IV playoffs if Teaneck (1-7) somehow upsets Old Tappan (7-1). The game is meaningless for Old Tappan.

Boys Soccer - Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Wayne Hills 2, Mount Olive 0

Tyler Kulcsar and Julian Romas scored for Wayne Hills (No. 5) as it defeated Mount Olive (No. 4), 2-0, in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 quarterfinals in Mount Olive.Justin Diglio assisted on both goals for Wayne Hills and Grant Kelly made 10 saves for the shutout.

Girls Soccer - Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Wayne Hills 4, Montville 1

Meghan Griffin scored one goal and had two assists to lead Wayne Hills to a 4-1 victory over Montville in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Wayne.
Sabrina Simi scored two goals for Wayne Hills and Sam Rodriguez had one. Sarah Bendi had one assist and goalie Erica Knudsen recorded nine saves. Carly DeNigris scored the lone goal for Montville and Stephanie Maggio had one assist.

Girls Soccer: North Jersey, Non-Public A - DePaul 7, Kent Place 3

Lauren Kachidurian was part of five of DePaul's seven goals in its 7-3 triumph over Kent Place in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Non-Public A tournament in Wayne. Kachidurian had two goal and three assists and Melissa Kelly scored three goals and had one assist.

Christina Fabiano stopped 10 shots for Wayne Hills.

Cassandra Gerard scored both goals in Wayne Valley's 2-0 triumph over Sparta in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Wayne. Melissa Choka assisted on both goals and Alex Piekarz made 13 saves for Wayne Valley.

Boys Soccer - Section I, Group III First Round: Wayne Hills 5, Montville 1

Julian Roma's second-half goal was the difference as Wayne Hills (No. 5) defeated Montville (No. 12), 1-0, in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Wayne. Grant Kelly made seven saves for Wayne Hills and Jared Kruger had 10 saves for Montville.

Field Hockey - Section I, Group III Playoffs

Wayne Hills (No. 2) takes on West Milford and Wayne Valley (No. 4) takes on top-seeded Northern Highlands tomorrow in Section I, Group III Field Hockey Semifinals.

Wayne Hills got to this pointing by blanking Mount Olive, 4-0. Delaney Burns collected a goal and an assist for the winners. Nicole Gullone, Stephanie Karback, and Brianna Hulbert each scored once and Christina Fabiano made six saves for Wayne Hills.

Wayne Valley reached this round by defeating Sparta (No. 5) in the quarterfinals, 2-0. Cassandra Gerard scored both goals in Wayne Valley's triumph. Melissa Choka assisted on both goals and Alex Piekarz made 13 saves for Wayne Valley.

Girls Soccer - Section I, Group III First Round: Wayne Hills 5, Bergenfield 1

Sam Rodriguez scored three times as top-seeded Wayne Hills bested Bergenfield (No. 16), 5-1, in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Wayne.Haley Savva had a goal and an assist, while Samantha Cohen also scored for Wayne Hills. Kelsey Ardizzone had a goal, assisted by Haley Virone for Bergenfield.

Football: Wayne Valley's Playoff Hopes Still Barely Alive!

Thanks to Friday night's 17-7 win over Teaneck, the Wayne Valley football team's continues to cling to very slim playoff hopes. Valley currently trails Passaic Valley for the 8th and final playoff spot, 84-80. Here's the explanation:

-Only the team's first 8 games count in the playoff race. Valley has already played 8 games. Therefore, Valley can't earn additional points in their game against DePaul Friday.

-Residual points can be earned based on your opponents won/loss record - you can even earn residual points for losses.

-Two of Valley's opponents (Paramus and Teaneck) still have their 8th game left.

-Paramus plays at Wayne Hills on Friday night. If Paramus beats Wayne Hills, Valley earns one residual point to bring them within 84-81 of Passaic Valley.

-Teaneck hosts Old Tappan on Saturday. If Teaneck beats Old Tappan, Valley earns three residual points and ties Passaic Valley, 84-84. This may seem extremely unlikely, since Old Tappan is 7-1 and Teaneck is 1-6. But not so fast! The game is absolutely MEANINGLESS for Old Tappan, a team with championship aspirations. Some teams, in like situations, have sat their starters. Additionally, Teaneck plays on a grass field. Valley fans may want to pray for bad weather - as that could possibly not just slow Old Tappan down, but could also prompt head coach Brian Dunn to rest his starters.

-PV is maxed out! They can't earn more points!

-Should PV and WV tied in the power point race, Valley gets the tie breaker, based on the fact that they beat PV.

-Interestingly, this would all mean that Wayne Valley would end up playing Paramus in the 1 vs. 8 game. Ordinarily, the No. 8 team loses handily to the No. 1 team. But in the regular season game between these two, Paramus beat injury ravaged Valley, 12-10. Reportedly, long-lost starters Anthony Landberg, Dave Drozjock, Andrew Popoadics and Will Kearney would be able to return for this game.

-Stay tuned. 

Football: St. Joseph-Montvale 38, DePaul 14

The evening could not have started any better for DePaul (6-2), as it took a 7-0 lead on its first play from scrimmage on a 72-yard run by Markey Clark just 20 seconds into the game, sending the Spartan faithful into a frenzy. But by the time Clark found the end zone again, on an 8-yard run with 5:53 left in the game, St. Joseph had rattled off 38 straight points to remove any doubt it will spend yet another week atop The Star-Ledger Top 20 going into next Saturday's home game against Ramapo. Football: Wayne Hills 35, Passaic Tech 7

Junior quarterback Peter Palczewski, subbing for injured Justin DeGroat, passed for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead Wayne Hills (5-3) pass previously undefeated Passaic Tech (7-1). Anthony Kenny ran for two others to lead Wayne Hills

Kenny burst over from the 1-yard line in the first quarter and Palczewski fired a 75-yard bomb to Steve Pusterla in the second quarter to help Wayne Hills to a 14-0 lead at the half. In the fourth quarter, Justin Hogan scored on a 1-yard run, Kenny ran for a 4-yard touchdown and Palczewski threw a 16-yard pass to Sean Slazyz for Wayne Hills.

Thomas Jefferson finished with 182 yards on 32 carries for Passaic Tech, including a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

With the win, Wayne Hills clinches it's 18th straight playoff berth. They'll most likely be seeded No. 4, behind Paramus, Pascack Valley and Old Tappan. They will most likely host either Northern Highlands, Randolph or Morris Knolls. Hills could fall to the No. 5 seed. That would mean they would play one of those three teams on the road.

Football: Wayne Valley 17, Teaneck 7

Senior Anthony Duncan scored on 12 yard interception return and on a 32-yard aerial from Billy Crank. Jake Anderson drilled a 34-yard field goal for the winners. Valley (4-4) is mathamatically still alive for the playoffs, but most likely will not qualify.

"We needed Passaic Tech to beat Wayne Hills and Ramapo to beat Pascack Valley and neither of those things happened," said head coach Brian O'Connor. "We're still alive, but really too much has to happen for us to get in now. The kids knew it was a long shot coming into the game and they still played with a lot of heart and fought to the end."

With a big senior class this year, the preseason outlook for Valley was high. But a myriad of injuries doomed Valley's chances. Valley has two games left. They play at DePaul next Friday and will then most likely play a consolation game the following week.

Against Teaneck, Jason Dinan led the way with 11 tackles. Mark DeLuise and Ryan Mac Donald added 8 and 7 tackles respectively. Justin Walker and Liam Connors registered 6 tackles each. Rich Brunje had 5 tackles, including a sack. Mike Koropsak and Taylor Kishfy contributed 5 tackles apiece. On offense, Crank passed for 86 yards and DeLuise ran for 82. Duncan had three receptions.
