Girls Skiing: NJ Skiing: Wayne Hills girls seize NJISRA state title

In team competition, the top four fastest times among six skiers tabulate to achieve one overall time. Most teams have two or three exceptional skiers carrying the load. The Wayne Hills girls team, however, possessed six dynamic skiers from which to choose. Seniors Allison Kowalski, Valerie Anderson and Kristen Ascione, juniors Talbot Weston and Meryl Ryan, along with freshman Stephanie Bitcon, dominated the giant slalom on Thursday (5:58.44) before following it up with yet another dominating performance in the slalom (8:17.68) yesterday as Wayne Hills finished in a combined 14:16.12 to capture its first team state title at the Hidden Valley Ski Club in Vernon. Girls Basketball: Non Public North A Semifinals: DePaul 46, Roselle Catholic 23

Jade Walker scored a game-high 17 points to power DePaul in the semifinal round of the North Jersey, Non-Public A tournament in Roselle. Starr Breedlove netted 12 points and Walker scored eight of her 17 points in the first half when DePaul built a 23-11 halftime lead. Marcia Senatus had 11 points and Melissa Tobie added seven, concluding her career with 1,016 points for Roselle Catholic.

Boys Basketball: Section I, Group III Semifinals: Passaic Valley 69, Wayne Valley 50

Andrew Herasimtschuk, Wayne Valley's second leading scorer and leading rebounder, was held out of the game due to a concussion. Tom Larranaga paced Wayne Valley with 12 points and Andrew Keane had 10 and eight boards. Nick DiCristina connected on six of eight 3-pointers, all in the first 16 minutes, made nine of nine free throws for the game and finished with a game-high 27 points.

Boys Basketball: Section I, Group III Quarterfinals: Wayne Valley 71, Demarest 47

Junior guard James Grevenitz scored 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and Tom Larranaga had 14 to lead Wayne Valley (No. 12, 15-13) in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Wayne. Andrew Herasimtschuk had 13 points and five rebounds for Wayne Valley, which will visit eighth-seeded Passaic Valley Saturday in the semifinals. This is Valley's fifth trip to the semifinals in the last five years. Luis Montalvo had 16 points and Billy Lewis added 13 for Demarest (No. 13). Photos To Come

Tom Gaccione had 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Dave Clough netted 10 to lead Passaic Valley (No. 8) in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 tournament in Little Falls. Olumide Onajide had eight points and 10 rebounds for Passaic Valley, which advanced to the semifinals for the fourth time in the last six years. Passaic Valley will be the host to 12th-seeded Wayne Valley for the third time this season, tomorrow at 7 p.m. Peter Daibes had 15 points and Mike Driesse collected 10 for Wayne Hills (No. 16, 11-17).

Girls Basketball: North A Quarterfinals: DePaul 59, Mt. St. Mary's 45

Jade Walker scored a game-high 25 points, while Starr Breedlove added 19 more to fuel DePaul in the quarterfinal round of the North Jersey, Non-Public A tournament in Watchung. Bridget Ryan scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Mount St. Mary.

Leanna Tallamy scored 10 points and Nicole Hull followed with nine points to spark High Point. Sam Litzky paced Wayne Hills with nine points.

Boys Basketball: Section I, Group IV Quarterfinals: Kennedy 67, Passaic Tech 65

It was a game typical of the rivalry between Paterson Kennedy and Passaic Tech, in which the outcome wasn't decided until the final seconds.

Senior guard Jhamir White sank three of four free throws in the final 23.2 seconds and Paterson Kennedy, the 10th seed, staved off threats in the fourth quarter to maintain the lead and emerge with a 67-65 victory in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament yesterday at Passaic Tech in Wayne. Ice Hockey: DePaul falls to St. Augustine Prep in Non-Public Tournament

History was chiseled into the state's hockey tableau Sunday at the Ice Vault. What's more, DePaul Catholic checked off another team goal by winning the program's first-ever State tournament game. Get this: It took overtime.

"This was one wild game," DePaul coach Darren Amerkanian said. "Our parents were wildly into it. The game was end to end."

Freshman Zach Finkle scored a golden goal at 12:59 of the extra session off an assist from Kyle Scancerella to eliminate Paul VI, 6-5, in the first round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Non-Public Tournament. Click here to read more.

Boys Basketball: Section I, Group III State Playoffs: First Round: Wayne Valley 46, West Milford 44

Jay Mustafa's three point shot at the buzzer propelled Wayne Valley (No. 12, 14-12) past West Milford (No. 5, 19-8). Senior guard Tom Larranaga tossed in a game-high 18 points and forward Andrew Herasimtschuk had 15 for Wayne Valley. Connor Healy paced West Milford with 17 points and Tyler Coyle scored 11. Herasimtchuck led the team with 6 rebounds. Larranagga had 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Mustafa had 3 assists and 3 steals.

Nickolette Driesse scored a game high 24 points to help lift Wayne Hills (No. 8, 17-9) past Sparta (No. 9). Christie Cherup added 16 points for the winners.

Girls Basketball: North A State Playoffs, First Round: DePaul 58, St. Dominic 38

Sophomore center Jade Walker struck for 25 points and Starr Breedlove, a senior guard, scored 11 points for DePaul in the first round of North Jersey, Non-Public A in Jersey City. DePaul had a 15-11 first quarter and forged a 28-19 halftime lead. Natalia Ortega collected 14 points, four rebounds and three assists and Bria Smith contributed 11 points, eight boards, three assists, three steals and two blocks for St. Dominic.

Laura Shakiri had 14 points, but it was not enough as Wayne Valley ((No. 11, 12-14) fell to Northern Highlands (No. 6). Kaitlyn Callaghan and Sami Markowski chipped in with 11 points apiece for Valley

Boys Basketball: North A State Playoffs, First Round: Delbarton 65, DePaul 60

Dean Brierley poured in 26 points and Scott Curran scored 10 for Delbarton (No. 6) in the first round of the North Jersey, Non-Public A tournament in Morris Township. Josh Marquez had 22 points for DePaul (No. 11).

Boys Basketball: Section I, Group IV State Playoffs: First Round

Senior guard Xavier Nieves paced a balanced scoring attack with 14 points and Isaac Williams scored eight for Passaic Tech in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament in Wayne. Passaic Tech (No. 2) used a 16-15 third period to grab a 39-34 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Shakir Rhodes led Passaic (No. 15) with 14 points.
