Football Final Score: Wayne Hills 35, Northern Highlands 7

Justin Hogan ran for touchdowns of 25 and 65 yards to help lead Wayne Hills to a 35-7 victory over Northern Highlands in Wayne.  Chris Garrone recorded two TDs and Vinny Loverde scored on an 81-yard punt return for Wayne Hills (1-2).

Hogan finished with 144 yards rushing and with 10 tackles on defense. Garrone added 111 yards rushing.

Nick Goodwin threw for 133 yards, but Valley (2-1) still lost for the first time this season. Joey Scancarella had 65 yards receiving. Will Kearney 6 receptions for 53 yards. Andrew Popadics had 2 catches. The Paramus’ defense allowed just 64 yards total on the ground for Wayne Valley.

Mark DeLuise led the defense with 14 tackles. Mike Scaglione added 6 tackles. Tyler Walther, Kearney, Vinny Tedesco and Charlie Onorato had 4 tackles each. DeLuise and Onorato combined for a sack.  Eric Jankowitz recovered a muffed punt.

Bryce Jacobs ran for 107 yards and Tyler Smith ran for 75 yards to lead Paramus. Smith also passed for 96 yards. Jacobs ran for two scores, while Smith ran for a score and passed to Derek DeLaCruz for another.

Paramus’ defense allowed just 64 yards total on the ground for Wayne Valley.

Wayne Valley Focuses On Paramus After Blanking Tenafly

Within moments of being named Wayne Valley football head coach, Roger Kotlarz knew what he had to do as his first order of business.

Valley’s upperclassmen, the new coach believed, would have concerns. The seniors especially, it stood to reason, might be wondering, ‘What if the new coach wants to implement a two or three year plan?’

“It’s a good question,” Kotlarz said. “Very often there is a transition period when a new coach comes in. But I wasn’t about to give myself a grace period. That wouldn’t be unfair to the current players, especially the seniors. Besides, I realized pretty early on that this team had the talent to be good this year. “The only question I had was ‘when would it all click.’”

UPDATE: Football Final Score: Passaic Valley 35, Wayne Hills 14



 Hills' first touchdown came on a Thomas Skiba to Chris Garrone 23 yard pass. The second score came on a Pete Palczewski to Vinny Loverde 12 yard pass. Palczewski threw for 90 yards. Skiba threw for 47 years.

Anthony Vigorito had 54 receiving yards. Justin Hogan had 12 tackles and Joe Stambouly had 9. Kyle Bracket added 8 tackles. Tom Ramsay, Joey Kenny, and Brian Berges had 5 tackles apiece.

UPDATED: Football: Wayne Valley 33, Tenafly 0



Mark DeLuise ran for three touchdowns (7, 8, 1 yards) as Valley improved to 2-0. Nick Goodwin added a 22 yard touchdown run and Elijah Navaro ran for a 8 yard score.

Goodwin finished with 195 passing yards. DeLuise ran for 117 yards. Andrew Popadics had 5 receptions for 69 yards. DeLuise had 2 receptions for 65 yards. Chris McClurg and Ryan Monteyne helped sustain scoring drives with long receptions from Goodwin. Navaro started a touchdown drive by blocking a punt.

 Vinny Tedesco had 1.5 sacks. Ryan Lynch and Charlie Onorato had one sack each. Will Kearney and Popadics had interceptions. Kevin Hughes had a forced fumble.

UPDATED - Football Final: Wayne Valley 23, West Orange 14


Mark DeLuise rushed for two touchdowns and Nick Goodwin rushed for another as Wayne Valley won in head coach Roger Kotlarz’s debut. Protecting a 21-14 lead late in the game, the verdict was sealed when sophomore Joey Monsen sacked the West Orange quarterback for a safety (above).

DeLuise finished with 93 rushing yards. Goodwin added 68 rushing yards and passed for 84 yards. Andrew Popadics had five receptions. DeLuise and Joey Scancarella had two catches apiece.

DeLuise also led the way on defense with 16 tackles. Mike Scaglione added 10. Andrew Popadics had seven and Vinny Tedesco had six. Will Kearney and Tyler Andreas had five apiece. Tyler Walther, Ryan Coyle and PJ Chak had four spills apiece. Jake Pluta also had a sack. Walter and Chris McClurg had interceptions.

Eric Jankowitz drilled four extra points. McClurg had 59 returns yards.

Football Final Score: Demarest 7, Wayne Hills 6

Alex Wasserman's had a 45-yard TD run for Demarest. Greg Schwartz's extra point ultimately proved to be the difference. Luca Grave then scored on a four yard touchdown rush for Hills, but the extra point attempt failed.

A New Era In Wayne High School Football

The Wayne Demikoff/Roger Kotlarz football era in Wayne has dawned. Both men have recently taken over for longtime predecessors. Demikoff is about to embark on his second season after taking over for Chris Olsen, who was on the job for 21 years. Kotlarz takes over this year at Wayne Valley for Brian O'Connor, who was on the job for 12 years.

Valley and Hills won't square off this season until Week 9 at Hills. Hills opens Friday at Demarest. Valley opens Saturday at West Orange.  See the team previews on both teams below:
