Girls Lacrosse: Wayne Hills 13, Pascack Hills 3

Victoria Cunningham scored four times as Wayne Hills downed Pascack Hills, 13-3, in Montvale.
Gabriella Bussanich had three goals for Wayne Hills, which grabbed a 10-0 lead at halftime. Ileyana Little scored twice and had two assists, as well.

Girls Lacrosse: Wayne Valley 14, Dwight Englewood 10

Kim Doyle and Gia Gagliano combined for 12 points for Wayne Valley in a 14-10 victory over Dwight-Englewood in Englewood. Doyle had six goals and an assist, while Gagliano scored five goals and Lauren Cianci made 11 saves.

Baseball: Wayne Valley 6, Passaic Valley 3

Tyler Blumenstyk's two-run single in the top of the seventh capped off a five-run rally by Wayne Valley (9-5), which went on to defeat Passaic Valley, 6-3, in Little Falls. Wayne Valley trailed 3-1 going into the top of the sixth until Jake Andersen hit a two run single to tie the game up at three. Joe Trabucco's RBI groundout made the score 4-3. Mike Elia earned the victory going six innings allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out five.Chris Vogt pitched well for Passaic Valley going six innings allowing two earned on seven hits while striking out two.

Passaic County Tournament Softball Roundup

Wayne Hills (No. 9) will play top-seeded DePaul in the quarterfinals Saturday. Hills beat Passaic (No. 8) in the first round, 8-4. Brianna Hulbert led the way with two RBI. Melanie Cieucich, Keely Hassert, Sophia Levin, Alana Luna and Rachel Vellis all knocked in runs. DePaul drew a bye in the first round.

Wayne Valley (No. 11) lost it's first round game to Hawthorne (No. 6), 3-2. After Wayne Valley took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh with a run, Hawthorne won it with two runs in the bottom of the inning, 3-2, in Hawthorne. Gabrielle Goodwin and Marissa Murino had the RBI for Valley.

Tom Murphy singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring home the winning run and give West Milford a 6-5 nine-inning victory over Wayne Valley in West Milford. John Tierney's two-out double in the seventh tied the game at 5-5 to send the game to extra innings for West Milford. Joe Pascucci finished with two RBI for Wayne Valley (8-5). Jake Anderson, Justin Woll and Alex Kokos also batted in runs.

Baseball: Wayne Valley 3, Fair Lawn 2

James Konopinski delivered an RBI single with two outs to score Joe Trabucco and lift Wayne Valley to a 3-2 victory over Fair Lawn in eight innings in Wayne. Trabucco, a courtesy runner, was moved into scoring position via a single by Alex Kokos, also with two outs. Joe Pascucci threw two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory. He was also 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Baseball: St. Joseph-Montvale 3, Wayne Hills 2

Wayne Hills gave St. Joes all it could handle, before losing. Dylan Habeeb doubled and knocked in Wayne's two runs.

Girls Lacrosse: Wayne Hills 15, River Dell 8

Gabriella Bussanich scored four goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead Wayne Hills past River Dell, 15-8, in Oradell. Kristen Russo had three goals and two assists and Victoria Cunningham chipped in three goals as well for Wayne Hills, while Christina Vittas made 11 saves. Gabrielle Davidson paced River Dell with three goals.

Eric Luberto went 2-for-4 with two RBI as Wayne Hills scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Bergen Tech, 6-4, in Hackensack. Anthony Vigorito, Ryan Maskal, Chris Franco, and Edzel Ortega all had two hits as well. Ortega had a triple and two runs. Mike Blumenthal pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Mike Elia earned the victory scattering seven hits over six innings while striking out eight in Wayne Valley's 11-2 victory over Clifton in Clifton.Mike LoPresti went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Joe Trabucco was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Brian Moore contributed two doubles and an RBI. Valley is now 7-4.

It’s April! It's time to “Play Ball!”

Throughout the month, Opening Day baseball ceremonies are taking place across America. They are being held at Major League Baseball cities, college towns, high school campuses and Little League Parks. They took place everywhere - almost everywhere, that is. There’s has not been an opening day for intercollegiate baseball at New York University (NYU) since 1974. There has never been an opening day for baseball at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey.That will change at NYU next year, when baseball is revived after a 40-year absence.

Jake Van Peenen scored four goals and assisted on another as Wayne Hills clipped Ramapo, 7-6, in double overtime in Wayne.James Bernard added three goals and an assist and Darren Schweibel picked up a pair of assists. Jake O'Brien made 14 saves in the victory.

CJ Coiley had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Lakeland defeated Wayne Valley, 7-6, in Lakeland. Wayne Valley (5-2) rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the top of the seventh aided by a two-run throwing error and an RBI single by Anthony DiBartolo. Lakeland responded with two runs in the bottom half, capped off by the RBI single by Coiley.

Baseball: Wayne Valley 2, Wayne Hills 1

Tyler Blumenstyk's one-out sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning scored teammate Joe Trabucco to give Wayne Valley a 2-1 victory over Wayne Hills in Wayne. Senior Jake Andersen pitched seven innings allowing one unearned one and striking out six for Wayne Valley

It was Valley's second straight win. They beat Fair Lawn a day earlier, 4-3. Sophomore Alex Kokos gave up one earned run on the mound and went 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base to lead Wayne Valley. Kokos pitched 4-2/3 innings and allowed seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Jake Andersen and James Konopinski each had an RBI triple. Relief pitcher Mike Elia pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings and escaped from a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh.

Softball: Wayne Hills 6, Wayne Valley 5

Alana Luna went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Wayne Hills past Wayne Valley, 6-5, in Wayne.
Melanie Cieucich pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out four for Wayne Hills. Gabrielle Goodwin was 2-for-4 and had two RBI for Wayne Valley.

Girls Lacrosse: Wayne Valley Honors Classmate In Victory Over Demarest



The Valley girls team honored Nick Romano, a WV classmate and who died Friday night in a fatal car accident on Alps Rd. He was a friend to many of the girls and a former student of Coach Kraft.

In the game, Madison Carlucci scored five times to go with an assist for Wayne Valley in a 14-4 victory over Westwood in Washington Township. Carlie Vieldhouse had 11 saves for Valley. Kim Doyle had four goals and two assists, while Carlee Hart had three goals. Kathleen Hanna was one of four players with a goal for Westwood and Allyn Lillian made 14 saves.

Girls Softball: Wayne Hills 11, Union City 9

Sophia Lewin went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and Brianna Hulbert was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI as Wayne Hills beat Union City in an 11-9 slugfest in Wayne. Melania Cieucich added two hits and two RBI for Wayne Hills. Union City, which out-hit Wayne Hills, 14-12, was led by Julianne Sosa (1-for-3, four RBI) and Elenis Garcia (2-for-3, three RBI). Union City took a 7-6 lead with five runs in the top of the sixth, but Wayne Hills scored five in the bottom of the sixth.

The team's tight-knit nature came in handy yesterday as Wayne Hills had to play just hours after the death of 17-year-old Wayne Valley junior Nick Romano, who was friends with several players, in a car accident on Friday night.

Ryan Leonard and Robert Papa each scored four goals to help Wayne Valley defeat Fair Lawn, 14-6, in Fair Lawn. Billy Crank recorded a team-high five assists for Wayne Valley, which led, 6-0, after the first quarter. David Drozjock added two goals and two assists while Crank, Alec Doyle and Mike Koropsak found the back of the net once each. Wayne Valley goalie Brendan Feddema picked up 16 saves.

Wayne Valley Baseball Roundups

Wayne Valley won two straight games by a score of 6-5 to improve to 3-1. On Friday, Anthony DiBartolo delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Wayne Valley to a 6-5 victory over Bloomfield in Wayne. Bloomfield led 5-4 entering the home half of the seventh inning. Joe Trabucco tossed five innings in relief, allowing an earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks to pick up the victory for Wayne Valley. He also had a RBI. Mike Elia and Justin Woll also had RBI for Wayne Valley.

On Saturday, sophomore Sean Lewandoski earned his first varsity win while senior Justin Woll had two RBI and two hits as Wayne Valley edged Paramus, 6-5. Lewandoski completed six innings, yielding three earned runs on seven hits. Joe Pascucci got the save while James Konopinski went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in the victory. Garrett Wiedemann paced Paramus by going 3-for-3.

Wayne Valley Student dies in car crash

A 17-year-old township boy was killed Friday night when the car in which he was riding crossed into the southbound lane on Alps Road and was struck by another vehicle, police said.

Boys Club Football Charts A New Course; Demikoff and Kotlarz Enthusiastic

The plan is to divide the Boys Club football program into two equal parts – perhaps ultimately an 8th grade team from the Wayne Valley side of town and an 8th grade team from the Wayne Hills side of town. Boys Club officials met with both Valley coach Roger Kotlarz and Hills coach Wayne Demikoff to discuss the plan. Both expressed enthusiasm for the plan and a willingness to get involved. That would entail working with the Boys Club coaches and players and introducing their philosophies and traditions.
