Girls Basketball: Wayne Valley 66, Passaic Valley 42
Kelly Wieczerzak scored 15 points to help Wayne Valley earn a 66-42 victory over Passaic Valley in Wayne. Wayne Valley had a 13-3 showing in the third quarter to take a
commanding 50-29 lead over Passaic Valley into the fourth. Jen Eitel
added 12 points for Wayne Valley while Victoria Abbondanza and Caroline
Koboska led Passaic Valley in scoring with 12 points each.

Liam Connors had 22 points and 5 boards, but it wasn't enough for Wayne Valley (6-9). Alex Kokos had 5 assists. Adam Brody and Kyle Greve had 4 rebounds and 3 assists each.

Jon Goldstein's sudden passing has provided the Wayne Hills boys' basketball team a time to reflect, as well as honor a man who provided guidance and love to the student-athletes. The 41-year-old Goldstein, a native of Wayne and former Woodland Park resident, became ill on Jan. 28 shortly after coaching a junior varsity basketball game at Fair Lawn. Goldstein, a long-time assistant basketball coach, as well as an assistant football, baseball and head golf coach at Wayne Hills, was having trouble catching his breath following the game, according to head basketball coach, Kevin Grimes.

Thursday's boys' home basketball game against Lakeland will go on as scheduled, at 7 p.m.
"We talked to the kids about that, and they all agreed they should play," Athletic Directory Brad Smith said. "We'll have a ceremony before Thursday's game. Kids are very resilient and sometimes it's best to let them keep their routine and go through the grieving process. I think it was good for them to stop by today and talk about their feelings."

The caller was an equally shocked Chris Olsen, the former Wayne Hills football coach, confirming the passing of his best friend and a Wayne Hills institution, Jon Goldstein. Goldstein, 41, a long-time assistant football and basketball coach, as well as the varsity golf coach at his beloved Wayne Hills, died suddenly this evening from cardiac arrest.

Girls Basketball: Wayne Valley 51, West Milford 38
Shanya Ocello finished with 12 points to help Wayne Valley earn a 51-38 victory against West Milford in West Milford. Alicia Hester netted nine points for Wayne Valley (10-2), while Keri
Wierczerzak added eight. Christina Lokai led West Milford with 10
points.

Scott Wills had 24 points to lead Hills (8-4). David Torres added 18 points. Joey Kenny had 9.

Kyle Greve had 13 points and 6 rebounds, but Valley (6-7) still lost to St. Joes in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Kennedy High School. Nick Giuliano added 12 points and 4 assists. Liam Connors had 8 points. Andrew Popadics had 4 rebounds.

Scott Wills exploded for 28 points as Wayne Hills (7-4) beat Wood-Ridge in the Cancer Vs. Cancer Classic at Kennedy High School. David Torres added 17 points. Joey Kenny added 12 points. Kyle Hogan and Erik Martinez chipped in with 8 and 6 points respectively.
Girls Basketball: West Morris 52, Wayne Valley 30
Kelly Wiezcerzak led the way with 8 points, but Valley lost for just the second time this season. Alicia Hester and Taylor DeStefano added 7 points apiece. Jen Eitel and Keri Wiezcerzak had 6 points apiece.

Brian O'Connor/Wayne Valley Football Update
O’Connor Still Coaching, While WV Looks For Replacement;
3 Highly-Qualified WV Assistants Viewed As Possible Successors

Even though Brian O’Connor acknowledges that his future as the Wayne Valley football coach is very much in doubt, he continues to carry himself as if he will in fact be the team’s coach in 2014 and beyond.
Just before Christmas, O’Connor met with Superintendent Raymond Gonzalez and then-district interim athletic director Mike Miello and was informed that his head coaching contract would not be renewed for 2014.
The head coaching job was then posted as vacant on the Wayne Board of Education site shortly after New Years Day. O’Connor was also told that he could apply for his job. He did so last week.
"I don’t know what my future as the Wayne Valley football coach holds,” O’Connor said recently at the post season football dinner at the Brownstone in Paterson. “What I do know is that high school football now requires a year-long commitment. I am still the coach and I will continue to see my responsibilities though – hopefully through next year and beyond. If not, I’ll see my responsibilities through the time a successor has been named.”
O’Connor’s remarks were met with a rousing, 5-minute standing ovation from players, coaches and most parents.

H.S. ice hockey: West Milford stuns Wayne Hills

high school hockey is beat a team three times in the same season. Wayne Hills
had knocked off West Milford twice already, but that pivotal third opportunity
had a lot more meaning than the previous two regular-season games.

Boys Basketball: DePaul 62, Wayne Hills 58, OT
Wayne Hills (7-3) gave longtime Passaic County power DePaul all it could handle yesterday before losing in overtime. Hills led for a significant portion of the game, but DePaul tied the game with a three-point shot with just under a minute to play. DePaul was able to take the lead and maintain it in the overtime session. Hills coaches disputed the game-tying three point shot, maintaining that the shooter had stepped over the three point line and that it should have been ruled a two-pointer instead.
Sophomore Dorian Hodge led Hills with 20 points. Senior Scott Wills added 14 points. Junior David Torres added 9 points. Senior Martin Kilroy and sophomore Joey Kenny had 8 and 7 points respectively. Juwan Carter led DePaul with 26 points. Debon Bright had 9 points. Robert Robinson and Jordan Thomas added 8 points apiece.

Liam Connors recorded 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as Valley (6-5) won. Jordan Walode added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Nick Giuliano had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Andrew Popadics had 4 boards.

Jen Eitel scored seven, but Wayne Valley still ended up losing for the first time this season.

scored 12 points to lead Wayne Valley to a 41-27 victory over
Hillsborough in Hillsborough. Wayne Valley led 16-10 at halftime and took a 27-21 lead into the fourth
quarter. Wayne Valley outscored Hillsborough 14-6 in the final period
to pull away. Jen Eitel and Alicia Hester each chipped in eight points
for Wayne Valley. Allison Wickman led Hillsborough with 15 points.
