Football: DePaul primed for statement showdown

Winning what would be just the third state championship in school history would be extremely meaningful for everyone involved with DePaul’s football program. Nothing the Spartans could encounter the first weekend in December, however, will be bigger than the opportunity that awaits them Friday night. Their regular-season showdown with unbeaten, nationally-ranked St. Joseph is being billed as the most significant home game in DePaul’s football history.

Passaic County Girls Soccer Championship: Wayne Hills 1, Clifton 0

Meghan Griffin scored with an assist from Cameron Santers in the second half and Erica Knudsen made three saves to lead second-seeded Wayne Hills to a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Clifton at Wayne Valley in Wayne. Rachel Egyed stopped seven shots for Clifton.

Passaic County Boys Soccer Championship: Wayne Hills 2, Clifton 0

Erik Thomas and Tyler Kulcsar scored as Wayne Hills topped Clifton, 2-0, in the Passaic County Tournament championship game at Wayne Valley.Thomas scored off an assist from Musa Gega and Kulcsar's goal came off a feed from Marcello Menucci. Grant Kelly made five saves to record the shutout for fifth-seeded Wayne Hills. Mark Glodava stopped seven shots for second-seeded Clifton.

Football: DePaul 54, Tenafly 7

Zach Bednarczyk threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns as DePaul, No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, won its fifth straight game with a 54-7 triumph over Tenafly yesterday in Tenafly.

Bednarczyk hit Hasise Duboise for passes of 60 and 55 yards in the first quarter as DePaul jumped out to a 27-7 lead after a period. He then connected with Matt Greff for a 25-yard scoring strike in the second quarter as DePaul built up a 41-7 halftime advantage.

Kareem Walker ran for two touchdowns for DePaul, while Pat Gunning, Shariq Marshall and Stephen Speidel each had a rushing score. Tenafly scored its only points in the first quarter, when Jared Levitt caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Chris Hammersma.

Football: Passaic Valley 21, Wayne Hills 17

Wayne Hills (4-3) struck first on a 90-yard kickoff return and took a 17-14 lead in the third quarter on a Justin DeGroat 2-yard run. Zachary Mazalewski ran for two touchdowns and caught the game-winning touchdown pass for Passaic Valley (4-3). Mazalewski, who scored on a 47-yard run in the first quarter, gave Passaic Valley a 14-10 lead when he scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter, then caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Mazalewski to make it 21-17 in the fourth.

Football: Northern Highlands 50, Wayne Valley 0

Bobby Brown threw three first-quarter touchdown passes to Holden Rosen-Grupp, then ran for a touchdown in the second to power Northern Highlands to a 50-0 victory over Wayne Valley (3-4) last night in Wayne.

Billy Crank led Valley with 126 passing yards. Ryan MacDonald, Mark DeLuise and Anthony Duncan had three receptions each. Connor Olaya had a 55 yard kickoff return for Valley.

Passaic County Field Hockey Championship: Wayne Hills 3, Passaic Valley 0

The early bird grabs the glory. That’s the on-target message Wayne Hills coach Tina Londino successfully communicated to her team preparing for Friday night’s Passaic County field hockey tournament championship game. Stephanie Karback scored 20 seconds in for Wayne Hills and the Patriots rolled to a 3-0 victory over Passaic Valley to earn their first PCT field hockey crown since 2010. Delaney Burns, who had an assist on Karback’s quick delivery, also had a goal late in the second half to finish off the dominant effort.
