Wayne Valley Football Hall Of Fame Class of 2013 Announced

Wayne Valley head football coach Brian O'Connor (center) announced the team's newest Hall of Fame inductees Saturday morning at the annual Summer Workout Kickoff breakfast at Applebees in Totowa. O'Connor was joined by one of the new inductees, Rolf Youngquist (left), and 2012 inductee, Mike Loniewski (right).

Youngquist, a longtime Wayne resident, was a quarterback/punter from 1964 to 1966. His teams went       7-1-1, 8-1, and 9-0. Loniewski was a lineman from 1995 to 1997 and is currently an assistant coach for Valley.

Inducted alongside Youngquist in September will be Joe Kessel, a guard/linebacker from 1957 to 1959; Bud Zuberer, a quarterback/safety/punter from 1983 to 1985; and Mark Doherty, a slot back/linebacker/corner back from 1988 to 1990.

Wayne (Valley) High School opened in 1952, but struggled through much of that decade against more established competition. But Kessel led the team to its first winning season ever in 1959 (7-2), setting stage for a glorious run through the 1960's.

Zuberer led Valley to an 11-0, State Sectional Championship season as a junior in 1984. His sophomore and senior teams went 8-3 and 9-2 respectively. Both lost in the finals. Valley lost just three game during Doherty's three years. They won it all in 1988 and 1989, before losing in the final in 1990.

All four former players will be inducted into the Wayne Valley football Hall of Fame at a preseason Beefsteak on September 5 at the Brownstone in Paterson.

Tickets for current players, alumni, and cheerleaders cost $40. The cost is $50 for all other attendees.

Source: The Wayne Today

When Kevin Grimes was coaching AAU basketball at the Wayne PAL in 2008 and 2009, he watched admiringly as Jim Catalano’s Wayne Hills basketball teams finished 19-8 both years.

“Those were some teams,” recalls Grimes. “They had two 1,000 point scores in Steve Lequerica and Joe Russo. They were fun to watch.”
