Football: Section I, Group IV Semifinals: Pascack Valley 20, Wayne Hills 11

Cristian Rodriguez scored a touchdown and rushed for a two point conversion, but Wayne Hills (No. 4, 6-5) still lost to top seeded Pascack Valley (10-0). Erik Martinez added a field goal.

Mike Manente caught two touchdown passes for Pascack Valley. The first was a four yard toss from Kyle Zenk. The second came on a 7 yard throw from Kyle Schneider with two minutes remaining to ice the game. Chris Garcia ran for Pascack Valley's other score. Zenk's 61 yard fumble return set up the score.

"We were at the 12 yard line and feeling pretty good (at that point)," said Hills coach Chris Olsen. "But the wrong kid picked up that fumble. He made a good return our of it. That hurt us."

This is the first time that Hills failed to make the final game since 2003 and only the second time since 1996. It's also Hills' lowest win total since 1994.

Go Pompton Lakes Go!

On behalf of the entire WayneSports.com staff, good luck to our neighbors Pompton Lakes as they take on a very strong Saddle Brook team in the semifinals Saturday. Skiffo Drake slipped away from the friendly confines of Wayne last week to take in the Pompton Lakes-Verona quarterfinal game. The Cardinals looked awfully strong in beating a talented Verona team.

Sparked by two goals from junior forward Lindsay Roller, West Morris defeated second-seeded Wayne Hills, 3-1, on Wednesday in the North 1, Group 3 field hockey championship game. The Highlanders will play Warren Hills, a 4-1 winner over South Plainfield, in a state semifinal Friday on neutral turf.

"We came out a little nervous and West Morris was pretty much poised and confident all the way through," Wayne Hills first-year coach Tina Londino said. "They were getting to a lot of the 50-50 balls and taking advantage of extra possessions and play in our zone." Click here to read more
